sunfire spoiler shaving
Wednesday, November 29, 2006 2:04 PM
Hey guys....well one of my winter projects is to shave the spoilers off of my sunfire. I was wondering the best way to fiil the holes, ie. weld or fill, and I was also wondering what ytou guys have done about losing the third brake light. I have noticed the super economy models up north that didn't come with a spoiler have the 3rd brake light in the back window. Also will a third brake light (in the window) from a sedan work? thanks

I have the third break light in my window; but i have my windows tinted so its pointless now; why would you want a third break light? just like them?

well.....it is the law to have a brake light so many inches from the ground. Usually they can't get the tint between the windwo and the light anyways

I dont know what you mean, sorry, i just am a little slow.
So many inched from the ground; you mean having your break lights in your rear bumper/trunk where ever they are is not good enough; i have never had a problem, i dont even have a bulb in my third break light; whole back window is tinted, cant see my third break light..

From what I remember you should be able to just take the rear deck out of a Sunfire that came with the 3rd brake light there and you may have to re-run the light wires. I don't think the sedan rear is the same shape but I could be wrong.

^^ Dude even with limo tint, the light is still going to come through and be visible. You might as well put the bulb back in, its generally a good thing to let people behind you know for sure that you're hitting the brake, and a 3rd brake light is a sure sign of that.

As for shaving, welding is the best thing you can do. The holes are small, so it is very simple to fill, just don't go to town with the welder or you will warp the metal for sure. Just tack it until its filled. Then grind, puddy, sand, and you're good to go.

As for the brake light, I recently solved this same problem, I have had my spoiler shaved for a long time now, but never really budgeted time for a third brake light. I had planned to put it in a custom spoiler I was making, but I ditched the project as I wasn't totally feeling the look. But anyways, I had constantly been paranoid that people behind me couldn't fully tell if I was braking (especially with homemade tails, paranoia level is high). So the other day I found a spare rear mount brake light laying in a pile of trash at the shop, it looks to be out of a VW. So i tested it and it worked, so i sprayed it black and propped it up in the window and it fit perfect. Wired it up, fastened it down, and voila, easy mod.

Check it out, (and this is through limo tint):
