I have done some searching and have not found answers. I want to paint my trunklid, door handles, mirrors, fenders, roof scoop, (dont flame, I dont have A/C), spot where I shaved the antenna, body kit touch-up....you get the idea. So I got paint gun from my Dad, only been used a few times I guess. Now for the questions:
Prep work: Sand starting with 120grit and work down to 500 grit, clean surface really well with dish-soap, let it dry, mask off area?
Paint: Spray At ? PSI, ? inches from surface, with how heavy of a coat? How many coats of base? How many coats of clear? Do I use primer on fiberglass, what about plastic? Should I use an adhesion promoter first?
Equipment: Do I need an air/water separator? What else do I need?
Please direct me in the direction of a guide, I could not find one. I have painted before, just did not get the results I wanted out of the rattle can. Please do not recommend stuff I do not need, I do not plan on entering my car in a show, it does not need a flawless paint job, just something that resembles a stock GM paint job (lol).
I hate when I forget things...Most important question...Where do I buy paint?

I think he's saying he has a roofscoop to get more air inside the interior because he doesnt have an AC, so don't make fun of him for having a roof scoop lol
yeh it does ozzie.. if he doesnt have AC and is doing a roof scoop.. odds are he is cuttin into the roof to get air circulating into the car from the scoop..
Dude best thing to do is go to the libary and get a book on automotive paint even Pep boys, Canadian tire, Walmart sells a book (Haynes manual) on just painting and body work When you buy the paint. It tells you what to use under what temps, and pressure. and tack time between coats The best way to paint something you don't know about is not to paint it ....Use a big piece of paper or old metal on the wall and do you test passes on the first that way you see you fan amount and how much pressure you used and well as how far you were ..It takes time Trust me its a art form ..I'm just starting out on airbrushing now i'm sick of painting cars and trucks

so what ever happened to rolling the window down?
dude, i dunno what to tell ya but you can`t be taught to paint a car online giving you all my experience is not going to make you a painter
but i can give you some advice o n the prep work, which is 99.9% prat of the paint job
if you wanted to do it that way sure 120, then 180, then 240, yes you can wash the car that`s fine not going to hurt anything, mask it off, use a good wax and grease remover before sealer
the amopunt of base depends on the product and the color you apply different colors are more transparent than others, i know the ppg dbc system covers faster due to the thicker pgments
yes i would use a water/oil seperator on the compressor
that`s all i can help ya with , like i said trying to teach you my tricks and tips on painting would be wasting my time, to many factors are involved, i have my own style, i set my gun to the air pressure i like so my way is not goin to help ya at all
and you can`t learn online!!!!
can i haz bondo
Thanks for the info and help guys/gals.
Yes the roof scoop will be functional, having the windows down is just not enough when its 95 out moving 20mph on the interstate. Also it rains a lot in Indana, and it gets kinda hot when you dont want to put the windows down. Im putting an air filter in the roof scoop so that hopefully not to much water will get in and I get a nice cold air intake (for me).
I will go to pepboys/autozone/advance/walmart and look for a paint book.
I will get a water/oil seperator on the compressor
Im not asking how to become a professional, I just wanted to get pointed in the right direction.
I will buy paint off the internet, anyone have a favorite web site for buying oem-like paint?
Thanks

dude thats so 80s.. its 2006 get with it
The amount of money you spend on materials will be right up there with what Macco will charge you to paint and do the body work. If you want a job that looks like factory then you can not get it done by painting it yourself or macco. But if you just want paint on it then send it to macco.

Im ok with that, at least this way I would have learned how to do it

The paint does not necessarly need to be as good as factory, just good enough to match my body kit.
putting an air filter in your roof scoop?
