As far as cleaning, I would recommend wiping everything down by hand. If you spray it with an engine degreaser or a hose you risk hitting electrical components and ruining them. If you have areas that are really dirty you can always get a small brush and scrub those areas with a little water, just make sure you're careful around the alternator and other electrical components.

I clean my engine compartment every time I wash the car that way it never gets really bad. I use Mother's Protectant on all the rubber hoses, etc. For the valve cover, underside of the hood, etc. I use Mother's California Gold Showtime Instant Detailer. I use blue shop towels to wipe everything down because you can keep turning them over and they will last a lot longer than regular paper towels.

As far as ways to dress up your engine compartment, there is the standard wire loom, silicone hoses, etc. They are also more expensive things like custom billet engine caps, getting things polished, battery covers, carbon fiber pieces, etc. Just like every other aspect of a car it really comes down to how much you want to spend and what you're looking to do.

As far as a new valve cover, RD Fabs does polished 2200 valve covers. They have a core exchange program where if you send them a valve cover back it only ends up costing about $50.00 which is a pretty good deal if you don't want the hassle of doing it yourself.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to email me: j_to_envy@yahoo.com. I have quite a few dress up mods done to my engine compartment and I will gladly help you out in any way I can.

Agreed. Leaky windshield washer fluid bottle and C-101 connector = very much bad.

Hi-Temp engine paint is another option if you don't want to do the polished look.

I've sprayed down the underside of my hood many times with engine degreaser and then a power washer and nothing went wrong. The alternator, battery connectors, etc got soaked and the car didn't choke, die, etc. You just have to make sure the car is running while you do something like that.
