Protecting paint...
Sunday, May 21, 2006 6:35 PM
OK, I'm getting the car painted next weekend. My question is what can I put on the car to help protect it going to and from shows? I know the blue painters tape, but that can get expensive quick. I'm willing to use it, but I was looking for other ideas to help prevent rock chips. I think I saw someone once who put clear plastic wrap on their car before they drove to a show but I'm not sure if that would be bad for the clear coat, I think I remember them saying they waxed it first but i'n not sure. Any one else have any suggestions.

syranwrap ur car.. sounds funny but it worked for us once.. also keep the paint clean too lol.. if u leave it out in the sun it will shrink and form fit onto the car nice a snug.. then just cut a opening hole in ur bumper infront of rad so u dont over heat it but we did it to my buddies celica.. seemed to work good but just like the tape it can get expensive also.. we used the industrial stuff so it wouldnt take so much work on getting it.. might look funny driving but i would rather look funny on the road and have protected paint then looking funny at a show from having unprotected paint.. dunno how well it would work we just tried it for the heck of it.. plus minimal tape needed to hold it on but some suggested on the edges to keep it from coming off.. just a idea.. maybe someone else has tried this also? plus dunno how the stuff does with paint.. seemed to be fine but i wouldnt know for sure..

Id say try that Glad Press and Seal. That stuff sticks to anything. And i imagine it would be easy to apply and not hurt the paint.

Walmart has a spray on "bra" that comes off with soap and water.

Check out a paint shop for plastic car wrap. Comes in huge rolls. Something like 300 feet by 14 feet for under 40 bucks. Another good one is the heavy duty garbage bags. Get the heavy yard kinda and split them open. That and a roll of tape should keep you protected for many shows. If I was really serious about going to alot of shows, I would look into a truck and trailer.

The world is a beautiful place.... but I wouldn't want to paint it.

Also remember that you can't wax your car for some time. The idiot I use to work for built a fiberglass box and a couple of days after it was painted he used a quick detailer (mequries) and it basically ruined the paint (fish eyed all over). I would look into a truck and trailer, or just get a lebra for the front end, and only put it on for trips to shows and make sure it isn't on there for days on end. You can use a hand glaze to wax the car with (it doesn't contain silicone)

The car will prob never see a trailer. I know that rock chips are going to occur at some point, I'm just trying to figure the best way to help prevent them.

with these damn front ends it's pretty hard to keep rock chips out. I think these front ends attract rocks. I would recommend a lebra, but you need to make sure you take it off like every month atleast and clean and polish under it (if not every week or every other week). Like I said before you can hand glaze the car after the repaint (your bodyshop should be able to get you some) and after about 6 months or so you can wax it, and make sure you wax under the lebra everytime you wax your car.

will a bra not fit on your front end? if yoru running stock bumpers it should. not the prettiest thing but great for long trips, we used it on the sunfire to get to and from shows that were out of state.

I could imagine it would be pricey too, and I've got the Xenon front. Yeah, I plan on getting a lebra, just trying to figure out how to protect the bumper too. Thinking the garbage bag idea may not be too bad.

Pallet wrap works pretty well, you get it in 18" by 500' or so rolls, wrap it around your car a few times, it sticks to itself, and then you can just cut out the radiator hole and the wheel wells. We actually used to wrap cars at work when we were bored, people just cut out the wells, the muffler hole and the radiator, then they were good to go. The only bad thing is getting in and out when it's wrapped all the way around the car, you have to do the dukes of Hazzard thing oing through the window.
