Only advantage I know of to single stage paint is that it's cheap.

Base/clear has more depth and better endurance.

Single stage will dull ALOT faster than base/clear.

Shortcuts always get you in the long run so try and not use single.

DO NOT do single stage...

1. Single stage does not protect your paintjob nearly as well as a base clear. Single has no clear coat, will dull quickly, can't really wetsand and buff it...and well it just sucks.

2. Base/Clear will offer you better protection, will look TONS better if it needs wetsanded and buffed, will last longer, etc.

single stage is what most ppls do when they have a junker and want to sell it...makes it look good for cheap...not good for long lasting and not near show quality

single stage is easier to spray, its nice and think and wont run on you quickly like a clear coat will ....thats the only advantage other then it being cheaper

you can make single stage run just as easy as you can clear coat, its alllllllll gun technique. single stage is completley outdated as far as im concerned... the only way it is better than the base/clear system is that it may be cheaper depending on paint and there isnt as much mixing

Incidentally... I suppose if you were restoring something pre-80's and wanted it all to be authentic then you'd use a single stage paint.

But again... all the reasons stated above are why they're not used anymore. The only time people use them is to paint a car that's not worth painting on the cheap so they can pass it off as less crappy than it really is.

Spring for the base/clear. If not for anything else, do it for the fact that after it gets dulled and scratched after a few years of exposure to the typical crap a car sees, you can wetsand it and buff it right back to new again. Single stage is fine if you don't drive the car much, maybe if it's a weekend sunny day driver kind of thing. My friend had single stage paint on his 66 T-Bird before he did the full resto and the paint lasted almost 5 years, wasn't perfect but it looked decent for a Maaco special.

well see the thing is. i can get it done for free due to my grams b/f ( pap died new fling lol) decideing to go with a different color for his car. it'll only be on the car for like a yr or two. should i do it or just wait???

I'd still wait, all that crap has to be sanded off for a decent job, just adds to the labor later when you want to do it right. If your base is @!#$ty, then whatever you put on top of it, no matter how nice, will be @!#$ty too.

this is true /\...as for the running thing...clear coat is alot easier to get away from you cause its thinner and tranparent for the most part...atleast in my painting experence

ok if material is thicker doesnt always mean its not goin to run on ya, i ran single stage and ran clear coat IT`S ALL IN THE PAINTERS HANDS!!!!

if you do single stage you will be wasting your time and money and applying more material to the car when you should have gone base/clear and paying more oney to have the car stripped down to bare metal due to to much material on the car

sinlge stage is still used but not that often, for the durablity for the shine base/clear is the way to go

can i haz bondo

like i said thats just what ive found in my experence in painting, which isnt a whole lot but some...yes of course its all in the painters hands, im not trying to say a single stage is better by any means...im just saying for the inexperenced its easier to paint....if for no other reason just the fact it will be less coats you have a chance to mess up
