Is this a scam??????

So my buddy is trying to buy a car, check out the following emails.
----------------------------------
Hello,

My 2002 Mitsubishi Galant LS with 86k original miles, runs and drives excellent. This car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history. It's in perfect condition without any mechanical problems, with no damages or hidden defects, no need for additional repairs, clear title without any accidents. This car runs and drives excellent. I have all the car's manuals, all the documents and papers.

I have dropped my price to $2,400.00 USD (purchase price) since this is an urgent sale and I need to sell it before 30th of April when I will be deployed in Afghanistan with my platoon replacing the troops scheduled to come home.
To conclude this deal in a timely manner, the financial part will be managed by the eBay . They are acting like a third party in our deal. Which means that you will have 5 days inspection period before committing to buy the vehicle. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.

If you're interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your Full Name, Home Address and Phone Number to open a case with eBay and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure.

HERE YOU CAN SEE MORE PICTURES AND DETAILS OF THE CAR: http://2002mitsubishi-galant.page.tl/

Kind regards

Unfortunately my buddy gave him his address, here's next email-
Hello,

Please take a few moments and read my email carefully, I know it is long, but because I received too many offers, I will explain all the details about the transaction.
At the moment I'm stationed at McGuire a Military Air Force Base, making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan. The car is already at our Military Logistics Department form McGuire New Jersey ready to be delivered. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistics Department can deliver it, because the car is in their custody.
Shipping may take anywhere between 2-3 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the vehicle.
For the payment I would like to use eBay as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the vehicle and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 5 days to inspect it. If you decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us.

I'll start the official procedure, and eBay will contact you about this you'll receive important guidelines + instructions from them. You ll be contacted by ebay in the next 24 hours.
PLEASE NOTE!
If the car is not how I've described it, you have the unequivocal right to refuse acceptance of the car (return postage on my expense) and you are entitled to a full and complete refund of the car's purchase price. It will be insured during transportation and will be delivered in front of your door.
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.

Kind regards

Def a scam. Also, there are no "Platoons" in the USAF. Our rough equivalent to "platoon: would be "flight"

Sounds exactly like the $4000 04 Escalade with only 67K miles and free shipping I saw a couple of months ago on Craigslist. It had one picture. When I emailed to find out what was wrong with the vehicle, I got a very similar response, and a whole crapload of pics of an immaculate vehicle that was easily worth 7-8 times that. There was none of the eBay or having to have it delivered from a base crap, but the same "need to sell immediately" story.

Kevin, correct me if I'm wrong here, but I thought the millitary provides storage of your stuff, if necessary, while you are deployed. I remember talking to a neighbor of mine who was a career Marine before, and I seem to remember him telling me something to that effect.

My wife and I live on base, so when i deploy in about 3 weeks all my stuff is gonna stay right here on base with her. AFAIK, if you live off base and collect BAH(basic allowance for housing), storing your crap is up to you. Another person in my flight is deploying a month after me, and she is in the process of moving her stuff into a storage unit at her cost.

Sounds like a scam to me, especially with the way he is describing the whole money thing and the whole ebay thing.

Ebay does not act as an intermediary or escrow service. They don't take payments either, though they do own PayPal. So most likely this person will send you a link to a site that looks a lot like ebay, but is in reality far from it.

For some reason, I think the government might start getting pissed that these people are "impersonating" US Military.

Not sure if they could do anything about it, but I'm kinda ticked off that they are doing that.

And I may be wrong, or mis-informed, but aren't the troops that are coming back, NOT being replaced? Aren't we leaving the middle east? Again, I may be wrong, correct me if I am.

.tl is the current country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for East Timor.

theres no reason someone in the US would use an extension from a tiny island in se asia. just do some simple research next time and you could figure this out yourself.
