i think all the jbody ecotecs (mid 2002 until the death of jbodies) are the same.

The fuel system on the 2002 j-body ecotec was slightly different then the 03-05 j-body ecotec. It was a minor and I think the main difference was just the fuel lines on the engine going to the regulator and what ever that cirular thing in thew line is.

J-body = cable throttle

cobalt = drive by wire

02-04 Ecos in the J-Bodies are the same.

05 Ecos in J-Bodies have a different block...which im pretty sure is the same as the block thats in the cobalt.

Other than that there are a few differences as others have mentioned.

02 J-body Ecotecs had a different fuel rail, 03-05 are generally the same, Cobalt has the same block, but electronically controlled throttle, and with minor adjustments, it makes slightly more power then the J-bodies, especially the most recent with VVT. But because of weight the J-bodies are generally quicker.

They have the same block as the 05, 02-04 are different. Not major differences ,but still its a different block, they are however interchangable as far as I know.

02 had the early style fuel rail, with extended fingers. had shorter injectors.
02's are known for having weak rods.. a problem when boosting stock bottom ends.

03+ had the 'newer' style fuel rail. also in 03, the piston ring positions were revised to improve emissions, but as a side effect weakens the topmost ringland.. making cracked ringlands a common problem (especially when modified)

all j-bodies are return-style FPR
deltas are returnless

j-bodies have cam-driven power steering pump
cobalts have 'power assisted steering column' thereby freeing the "5hp" extra

cobalt 2.2s ran throttle by wire, jbodies have cable

changes in head design midyear eliminated the EGR triangle. in 2005

starting in 06, all 2.2 ecotecs get a high resolution ignition system and true coil on plug (no more wasted spark).
I also believe the 2.2s are upgraded to the 'gen II' block design, akin to the LSJ block for improved block integrity.

in 08, I'm pretty sure they also eliminated the cam-drive flange (used for Power steering on jbodies) and also implemented VVT. Most noted by a redesigned valve cover with "ecotec" cast into the intake side.

Ecotecs also get an AIR system to aid in emissions

I think thats everything. I'm actually surprised the L61 is still around.. I thought for sure the LE5 would take over and the L61 would be discontinued.

the LSJ is already dead thanks to CAFE standards.

Ah @!#$, I was thinking of the head and saying "block", the EGR location it what I was refering to. I didn't however know it was a midyear thing, mine is the only 05 J-Body Ecotec ive ever seen, assumed it was all of them.
