G8 and Solstice will both be dead in five years or so.
Read it and weep.
Why is GM buying Chrysler again if it's killing off it's own models?
Well, as long as the Camaro's okay. Maybe they'll introduce a Firebird if it sells well.
if those two cars go, there's no reason for GM to keep pontiac around. the "excitement" brand won't be exciting at all with a whopping 3 econo cars.
GO PATS!!!
wow wtf thats sad the g8 and sols are so pretty
I'd like to see a Solstice at the under $20,000 price they said it would be. To pick one up around me costs more like $25,000-$30,000 for non-gxp! No wonder they're not generating sales.

GM is swapping GMAC for chrysler , so not really buying them
crappy news though about the G8
Awesome!! I swear I'm going to GM HQ and punching each and ever executive I can in the head until security catches me. Then again, I bet there's alot of people inside GM that want to do that anyway.

wtf??? "hey, here is our brand new g8. oh, and btw, we're discontinuing it so get yours before we stop carrying parts for it!" brilliant sales strategy!
and dammit.....i want a solstice. sad to see it go the way of the fiero so quickly.
they did that with the GTO too. granted, the GTO wasn't half the machine the G8 is, but regardless...seems like thats the type of company pontiac wants to be now.
hey, they're staying more true to the Scion company's "we're going to release a new car and discontinue an old one every 3-5 years" policy than scion is.

I think car companies need to make modular midsize-ish FWD/RWD platforms. The Chrysler LH was designed for it but never was utilised to it's maximum potential. With that you could make a RWD ponycar/convertible, a FWD family sedan, an AWD crossover/SUV, a FWD minivan, a RWD sports sedan, a RWD light duty sport truck, and most any other model using one assembly line and minimal tooling.
That's the only thing that will save most car companies.
Oh, and you know what would be not-very-funny considering the GM/Chrysler merger? If GM cancelled Pontiac and replaced it with Dodge. Don't laugh, it could happen. They've been wanting to shut down some of their makes and this trimming down of the Pontiac brand doesn't bode well.
The GTO was a joke and was only around because of less than stellar sales. The G8 probably suffers many of the same problems as far as sales and parts avalilbility.
It was kinda fun t see the owner of a GTO that needed a new axle and ha to wait months for it to show up. He had only broken it 3 times before, due to abuse. He was pissed and I was laughing.
this news is no surprise to me I am so tired of the car companies killing off cars that have loyal car buyers/fans behind them only to replace them with something new that they will kill of in a few years. To me it seems like mostly its our american car companies doing it......
The G8 is a nice looking car too bad.....
It is a shame to say this... but god damn if the US seems to get it wrong almost every time. We do one or two cars right, and do the rest of them wrong and short term.
How long has the Carolla, Civic, Accord, Camry, Celica all lasted? And the sales of them each year? WTF are american car companies thinking that is so different? Honestly...
On the other hand....you have other fingers.

I wish I knew man... 50% of people (and I'm probably underestimating) don't even KNOW what they're driving. They don't know if it's FWD, 4WD, AWD or RWD, V10, V8, V6 or L4. They have some vague concept of what it is, but that's about it. All they know is that they don't want the one with the extra pedal but want the one with the best HP or MPG. That's all they know. They like gadgets and doodads, they don't care. To them a car is like a little taxi to take them to work and to the groceries. If they can't explain what it does, they don't want it. Why do you think SUV's were so popular? They're big and crass and showy and you can explain them in one word "Offroad!". Now the new keyword is "Hybrid!" and I'll bet you ten million dollars that people like those cars more for the computer displays than for the fuel efficiency.
Why not do like Europe, Japan and Australia does? Make cars for enthusiasts that also appeal to the ordinary everyday driver. As opposed to bland cars that are hopped up for the enthusiast like we do here? We got it ass backwards. Then there's the quality of the interior thing. I MEAN HOW HARD IS IT TO SPEND 5$ EXTRA TO MAKE AN INTERIOR THAT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE ASS???????? A 1991 Toyota Tercel's interior feels like a solid slab of granite, the interior of my 2002 Sunfire feels like it was made out of old tupperware, yet the Tercel was worth like 3 grand less than a J-body most of it's life. It is unthinkable to me how car companies will not offer comfortable seats or push button start or paddle shifters or an onboard GPS/Computer or any number of options that would cost them pennies to the dollar to offer and make their cars extremely attractive to buyers. At some point it stops being anything except willful incompetence. Sweat the little details, make an cool car that is dialed down for mom and pop, not the other way around. Dumb people will buy anything you sell them and smart people will swarm to them. It's that simple.
Maybe this is for the best. Maybe having the whole house of cards collapse would be a good thing. If half-assed is the best most companies can do they don't deserve our patronage and money.
They could see that fuel economy was a problem when they came out with the car. So they can't really use that as an excuse. Sounds to me like they might be killing off the brand.
I love GM, but they have their heads up their asses more so than usual lately
The G8 is just new asthetics over an aussie platform anyway, so they didn't have too much to loose by bringing it to production here. Hopefully parts availability will not be an issue because of this as well.
It's a real shame - I agree on punching the execs in the head!
the worst part about killing (or just the possibility of killing) the g8 is that they JUST.@!#$.INTRODUCED.IT! how much enthusiasm and how many sales do they plan to get when they say "here is our new car. oh yeah, and we're discontinuing it"??? that boggles my mind.
the GTO was a little different situation, though. they had just axed the firebird and camaro and wanted to offer a rwd v8 to fill that niche. they mislabeled it GTO and tried to cheat some sales out that way. people saw through it and didnt buy, so it lasted even less time than it was supposed to. im pretty sure they were hoping to keep it out until they had something to replace it with, such as the g8 and new camaro.
When I can get a CTS for the same money, I wouldn't buy a G8 anyhow. I am not worried if the cut it out.
Solstice is another story. Will they keep making the Sky? Because they are the only two cars of that type GM has to offer.

The entire Kappa II platform is going away, The Pontiac Solstice, Saturn Sky, Daewoo G2X and Opel GT, all of em are not going to see a next generation.
Worse news is that GM is apparently not done pruning. I fear for any low volume model. So pray for the Camaro because if it doesn't at least equal the sales of the Mustang it's probably going away too.
Yeah, I bet you the Camaro will have a very short production run as well. Stupid GM.

They've actually already killed the Camaro. There were not hundreds of people lined up in the cold waiting to get them so they killed it. /sarcasm

Screw GM. Its all ran by retards now. Shareholders are getting screwed everyday.

Sadly, this is what success is to a car company. Sell 250,000 cars the first year or cancel it. Never mind if it's priced too high. Never mind if it's marketed wrong. Never mind if they didn't iron out all the quirks. If the public doesn't buy your crap immediately you cut it away like a tumerous organ.
I swear, every year gives me less of a reason to buy a car. I'm getting a weird vibe these days, like the "end" is coming. They're talking about killing off V8s, RWD is being seen as something of an albatross that could harm manufacturers MPG ratings, and the green craze is reaching new heights. We could be seriously be looking at the end of the RWD V8 coupe, or at the very least the end of the affordable musclecar. After that there's nowhere to go except introducing a ban for 20+ year old cars off the road. I wouldn't put it past them.
It is being cancelled mostly because of new CAFE rules put in 2007 as higher MPGs are gong to be demanded.
