Pontiac Announces New Small Car for U.S. Market
2009 G3 Offers Sporty Functionality, Fuel Efficiency, Value
2009 Pontiac G3
Pontiac G3 at a Glance
-Sporty, small five-door available in spring 2009
-Fuel-efficient 1.6L four-cylinder engine achieves 34 mpg
-Uncommonly high level of standard content, passenger room within segment
Expanding its portfolio in the rapidly growing small car segment, Pontiac announced plans to bring the sporty, five-door hatchback G3 to U.S. showrooms early next year. When it arrives, the G3 will provide Pontiac with a total of four vehicles capable of more than 30 miles per gallon on the highway.
Already successful in Canada (as the Pontiac G3 Wave) and Mexico (as a sedan model), the G3 offers an EPA estimated 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway while providing the best shoulder and hip room in the segment for seating five adults.
“The small car segment has literally exploded in recent months, with sales up nearly 33 percent in the first six months of 2008 alone,” said Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC. “With its proven success in other markets, we felt the time was right to bring the G3 into the BPG portfolio for our U.S. customers.”
The 2009 G3 will join the all-new 2009 Vibe (32 mpg) and recently enhanced 2009 versions of the G6 sedan (33 mpg) and G5 coupe (37 mpg) in Pontiac’s “Over 30” club.
“More than ever, fuel economy is an important factor in Pontiac’s formula of style and performance,” said Docherty. “The Vibe, G3, G5, and G6 prove that you don’t have to sacrifice sporty design and responsive driving to achieve impressive fuel economy.”
Generating 106 horsepower (79 kW), the G3’s 1.6L Ecotec four-cylinder engine is mated to a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. It will also feature an unusually rich mix of standard features for an entry-level car, including air conditioning, a CD/MP3 audio system with auxiliary input jack, fog lamps, rear spoiler, OnStar, and a host of standard safety features, including four airbags, that gain the G3 a five-star frontal crash rating.
Interior space is optimized to comfortably seat five adults, including “theater”-style seating for rear seat passengers. The rear seats also feature a 60/40 split to offer up to 42 cubic feet of cargo space.
The Pontiac G3 will arrive in U.S. showrooms in spring 2009 as a 2009 model and will be backed by GM’s five-year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Pricing will be announced closer to introduction.

Looks good. I would so drive that.
they should of at least gave them a coupe...
id get one if i could fit a LSJ or L61 in it
It is a rebadged Aveo.. I see them all over the place here.. Nothing really to get excited about. If I was shopping for a car in it's category, I would either get the Fit or the Yaris.

All pontiac is going to have is "G" something what does the "G" stand for?
well with this one it stands for "gay gay gay"
They should have based it on the saturn astra. This looks like the vibe's challenged little brother.
And I've said it so many times that I'm getting sick of hearing it, but can't they do better than that on milage??? I get 35mpg daily in my cavalier and its old news. If we're supposed to buy these tiny little cars with ~100hp, they should get >45mpg.
FAIL for not using the european market platform
Ugh yuck. GM can't do anything right, they must think everyone is an idiot. Is this really supposed to impress anyone - again?
The VW Jetta TDI (5 Speed) gets 50+ miles per gallon GM needs to step it up a bit
As soon as I saw the title with another G name I was dissapointed.
*facepalm*
G3, Wave, Aveo, they're all just a
Daewoo Kalos. Apparently the nameplate "Kalos" derives from the Greek word kalos for "beautiful". They named it "beautiful" in Greek, so it must be true.

At least whit hthe Cavy and sunfire they TRIED to make them look like 2 different cars. Now they just slap a badge on anything and it's supposed to impress us?
Gay.

I test drove one a couple years ago, and I couldn't stand it. The Yaris which does cost more, is just so much better.
never saw this coming

THATS under the new standars of 35mpg, in reality, if you babied it, you could get into the 40's without issue. THUS better then your cavy.
My Cav
I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
And besides the “theater”-style seating for rear seat passengers, and the foor airbags WTF is so different from the Aveo or Daewoo?lol
Cant stand GM's G appellation for all their newer crap.

Yes but my cav as it stands should be pushing 160BHP and low 15's/high 14's in the quarter. Given the car you get with the aveo/G3, it should be getting much better than it does. If I would truely baby my cav and run straight highway, i have no doubt it would flirt w/ 40mpg's
Is the 1.6L Ecotec actually the 1.6 eco they use elsewhere in the world, or did they just keep the same engine as before and slap the Ecotec badge over top of the old Dtec badge?
Saw one in person today, they do look alot better than the old Wave, or the Aveo. Personally I think it looks alot better than the Fits or Yaris' (Yarii maybe??). Interior is much improved too. But still is rated the same or worse for fuel consumption as a G5. I'm guessing it will still not stack up well next to the competition, but once you factor in the low price, people will still buy them.

It is a European Ecotec, with GM electronics not Daewoo. This GM Ecotec is more efficient then the Daewoo D-tec too.
This is what GM says on the engine.
Powering the Aveo/G3 lineup is an enhanced version of GM’s sophisticated 16-valve DOHC four-cylinder engine. This 1.6L Ecotec engine features variable valve timing for optimal power and fuel efficiency. It is rated at 106 horsepower (79 kW) and 107 lb.-ft. of torque (148 Nm). Technologies such as electronic throttle control and an electrically controlled thermostat to help maximize performance and efficiency across the rpm range. It also features an integrated oil cooler with piston spray nozzles.
The engine also features long-life and environmentally friendly features, including a timing belt designed to last 100,000 miles and replaceable cartridge-type oil filter rather than a conventional, spin-on metal can filter. GM Oil L ife monitoring system & a more powerful 95-amp alternator.
Aveo/G3 meets the ULEV II emissions standard, which – along with its outstanding fuel economy – makes it one of the cleanest, most economical vehicles available in North America.

Good. My main issue with the korean Gm cars was that the engines and trans were so terrible. rough, noisy, not powerfull, and not efficient either. This is definately a step in the right direction than.
i really thought they were trying to avoid doing this exact thing with pontiac now
well i guess i was wrong
