I pray to GOD they do it. I've been stating the potential use of a Holden Ute as an El Camino for awhile now and somebody figured it out. I do think they need to get rid of the bed cover but that's just me. I really hope they go through with this.

Wow. I'm willing to use my last post of the month for this. Just, wow. And also, the Holden version is UGLY, they better not ruin the Chevy version if they do it.
fortune cookie say: better a delay than a disaster
The Ute has been rumored a LOT to be coming over.. maybe it'll happen, but I wouldn't hold by breath.
im hoping Mr.Goodwrench-G.T. will be able to shine some light on this
I'ma gonna start saving for that.
IIRC, the tonneau cover is an option with the Ute SS
hahaha.
that thing is butt ugly.
this reminds me of the SSR. Everybody is like "WOW HOW AMAZING" then when it finally came it flopped.
This will probably never come to America, and if it does, it will not sell. Mark my words.
Yeah, concept cars are really looking good with 19 inch wheels and body kit, but when the production version comes out with with 15 inches and no body kit and all, nobody will buy it. Well not me.

GM needs to stop bringing back dead models and get their heads out of their asses to compete with Toyota and Ford, same thing with Chrysler, all their vehicles have that square boxy design and all look the same.

Yes, it is unpleasent to look at, they will never make it considering there really is no market for a car based truck.
Since when is Ford ahead of GM? Toyota for sure is ahead. As for all the Chevy models carrying the same look, all automakers use this technique, don't tell me noone else does. Nissan, BMW, Mercedes, Toyota, Ford, and Honda. Yes they're square and boxy but not alot of car companies right now are using curves and rounded body lines.
No market for a car based truck? What do you think the chassis of the S-10 was based on? A semi? Hell no! It was based on the GM '78-up A/G, just like the elky was before it was stopped due to discontinuation of the A/G platform lineup after '87, which was replaced by the GM-10 platform. The only other reason the elky stopped fully in light of that was the General didn't feel like playing the badge-engineering name-game. They already had the S-10, which did what the elky was first designed to do but with better load handling because of its use of leaf-springs instead of a trianglated 4-link, so it was the end for "The Great Road" in America. But not in Austrailia where it all began with Chevy following Ford's suit. In '53 an Aussie farmwife came to a Ford dealership lookin' for a vehicle to haul her flowers for gardening. At the time the only thing that could be offered was a full-sized truck. She felt it was too crude and needed too much effort to drive. So, something was worked-out by a bodywerks that built hearses. Yes, hearses! The result was the Ranchero. It was basically a Ford 2-dr wagon minus the rear roof with leaf spring rear suspension. Couple years later it came to America. In the late '50s, GM intoduced the El Camino, based on the Impala 2-dr wagon w/ trianglated 4-link rear. Back in Austrailia Ma Mopar eventually got in the act with ute version of its own based on the first-gen Valiant. This continued until the great Japanese auto invasion of the '70s intoduced the mini-truck. After that, the writing was on the wall. Ford joined efforts with Mazda to get the Courier from the B-truck, GM with Isuzu to make the LUV, and Chyrsler (which was with Mitsubishi since the late '60s) got the D-50 Ram. Ford dropped the then full-size LTD-based Ranchero at the end of '79, with some bodyworks making a very limited number of Fox-chassis Futura based models for '80. Dodge around '84 introduced an American K-car platform derived ute called Rampage, but it never really caught on in the new mini-truck market. Factor in dwindling sales against the Japanese & CAFE mandates that needed to be met, it's easy to see why the ute-body went way of of the rollerskating car-hop in America. Still, when it comes to style, little say it louder than a lil' ol' flower truck.

Unfortunately it is not on GM's future portfolio. This vehicle is in the same concept as the SSR, although enthusiasts will buy them if GM prices them right, but that is the demographic that will buy them, not the everyday people. If GM was in a better financial position to offer a niche vehicle like this, then there could be a possibility. But then there is the upcoming hurdle of C.A.F.E.

it would be a big plus for their combined truck mileage , since it will be another truck with mileage over 20mpg
From this angle it looks they took a newer model monte carlo and cut the back half of the roof off. In any case, I love the way the front looks but the pretty extreme slant of the windshield combined with the abrupt ending of the roof just looks really funky. I doubt it'll see the light of the day here anyway.
Oh god... you just reminded me of a little idea GM kicked past the auto journalists some years ago. There was talk for a brief time about making another American ute, this time bassing it upon the GM-10 mini-van body & platform ( The Lumina APV ). That was a FWD platform, and it at most only saw colored sketches. If they build a FWD Monte based ute even as a concept... well Austrailia might not need another hero, but we don't need another Rampage. Hey, did you know there's pro-class ute racing down under? Think about it for a moment... no wonder they're slappin' a restyle and a yank badge on the Holden Ute! They want to see if it'll go way of the Monarro did ( AKA: GTO )!

I wonder on that, because the EPA considers the PT Cruiser & HHR "Trucks." Going on that, EPA may consider this a car.

that could be possible , since the elcamino was built off the chevelle station wagon chassis
but give it atleast a 1/2ton capacity , that should be enough for a truck , id prob say use springs to keep the ride and load adjustable air bag system for when it gets loaded
The big trick will be for the ute to shake the "Earl-Sanchez" stigmatism that has built up aruond it in recent years. The small, "fashionable" minds that started that did more to hurt the ute than any corporate bean-counting that halted production here ever did. Heaven forbid there should be a good blend of style and function. God knows DUBS aren't. The ute is. Besides, I'm growing tired of seeing cookie-cutter mini-trucks both stock & modified on the street & in every custom truck mag. Let's welcome home our forgotten son of the road, it's been abroad to long. It was born here, so it should be able to come back here. Come home, Elky. We're waiting for ya.

Ha! My Ramcharger ( A 2-dr full-size SUV ) was called a "Carry-all" on it's slip, but to anyone who had a clue about styling & spacial area displacement, it was obviously not a van. And on the note of style, pickin' up where I left off (hee hee), the only reason the SSR sold was because it was fashionable. I mean, hell, they even offered a special matching luggage package for it from the factory in the brochure. My point is the only way the General will be able to sell it in the USA will be to overcome the idiotic stigmatism that's attached to it. AKA: Make it fashionable. And the only way to do that would be to market it like they did with the first-year Corvette: Attach popular celebrity to it by giving units away to popular music & movie faces to drive daily. That and hype the hell outta it like they did with the GTO in "The Last Ride". Ever wonder why that movie premiered on the USA Network? Did you ever notice how USA Network typically runs crap most of the time? Remember the corporate rule of money making by investment then add it to the equation and you have your answer. ( Hrmmf! ) All this talk about cars & celeb w/ the elky reminds me of line about J.Lo I heard on Inside Edition a fair while back: "You won't see her in an old El Camino...". Probably because she's more of a Ranchero girl! And if you've ever seen the styling of a '72-'79 Ranchero, you'd know what I mean: Talk about a Mexican-American girl with a big tail! Ha-HA! Sorry, Jenny... but I'm more for Jo from the Bronx. Dig It? Anyway, in order to sell this car here, they've got to make it look fashionable, AGAIN! By any way to any demographic possible that would profitable. Somehow, I see this being a big urban/tuner/lowrider piece, with some sales in V8 trim (Mostly V6) in the to the more suburban demographic... if it GM proves to be able to sell it right.

Just got back from dinner & came to realized something: I believe the C.A.F.E. rules define truck as "A vehicle of design primarily meant for transit of sizable loads w/ large open or enclosed cargo area with trim models of which made for sale as vehicles intended for commercial use." The PT Cruiser & HHR have commercial models, so they qualify. For the elky to qualify, it must also come in such a trim level. And be available in all trim levels at time of introduction. And that would play back to the sigmatism, hurting any & all image marketing GM would do to try to hype it in to first place. Plus, as a friend reminded me, the SSR partially bombed because it was hyped for 2-yrs before intro, then didn't live up to performance enthusiast's expectations coming only with a LS-1 5.3L V8 & auto trans. They did later offer a beefier version w/ 6.0L V8 & 6-spd, but it was to late by then. Between price, over-hype and a bed that couldn't really be used like a bed typically is (Remember the Lincoln Blackwood?) it just didn't justify going on to the General. And like anything fashionable, without proper continuation, it fell out of style. More trendy than tasteful. The over-hype sure didn't help much because if something rises too quickly in popularity, like with disco music, it falls out of favor. Hmmm... maybe it is better to burn away with some things than burn out. I dunno, if the General & proposed elky can cover all these bases: CAFE truck qualification, image salvation with favor, and have a usable bed with an acceptable price; it just might make it. Here's hopin' they do.
