hay Guys just a quick ? because you guys are the experts . My 2.2 in my 98 fire, kicked the bucket, now i found a 2.2l that runs for cheap but its out of a 97. the engine looks the same exept the tb and the fule rail, Im just wondering if the rest of the engine is the same or if it is all different.

so if anyone can help me out i would realy appreciate it alot.

Im not sure what you will need, but i can say the exhaust manifold, and intake is different. Also, the computer/wiring harness may be different. But im not sure. If you can find a 98 to 2002 engine it would be much better for you to use that. Im fairly certain the 98-2002 are the exact same engine.

Little bit of an up date, i just found out that i could get the hole car so i would have everything. the only problem is what would i need to change it to a standard, would the tranys be similar with those years.

As for the tranny...... IDK... it should work fine..... but going from and auto to a manual is a pain.... you have to replace literally everything.... the tranny, the shifter, the cables, the mounts, the axle shafts, install a clutch pedal, and hope the car doesn't freak out when the tranny is gone (will probably just throw some codes and Idle differently)... plus some other stuff.

But if your putting a 98 2200 in a 97 car that came with a 2.2 it will bolt right in... just make sure you have everything off the donor car because you will have to use the 98 wiring harness from the firewall forward, ECM, and maybe the ignition system. (Unless I'm mistaken about the year.... I'm pretty sure GM went to the 2200 in 98)

The 98 2200 5 speed is what i have now i have water shooting from the plug holes so i need to do something with the engine ihave a 97 fire 2.2 auto i could get or a 99 2200 auto just trying to figure out which way to go i want to keep the 5 speed i just redid it before the engine went and just want my car to run again.

my plan for my car in the future is i have 2.4l twin cam in my shop that i am tryin to rebuild but its going to take some time to get it done got lots of plans for it, so i just want to get it runing with out taking to much money away from the 2.4.

thank-you for the help so far

go with the 99... it would be a closer match then the 2.2 and the tranny should bolt up correctly...

why would you need to swap the trans? they all use the same bolt patterns. just swap the engine.

You will need the intake manifold, the exhaust manifold, and the computer. The majority of the engine was changed in 98. The transmissions are interchangeable. As already stated though, you would really be better off finding a 98/99. The 2000-2002 used the getrag transmission (so you cannot use them).
