I race a 97 Cavalier with a 2.2 at the local circle track. I've been racing for about 5 years, but almost exclusivly with a Honda. This is my first year with the Cavalier. Infact just had my first race night with it. Did respectable, but the Chev doesn't have the pull out of the corners my old Prelude did. I'm looking into switching the gear ratio.
But I've notice a few posts about switching to a 56mm TB. Here is where my newbie status shows.... What do I have now? It is the stock TB for a 97 2.2. Where can I get a 56mmTB? Can I get one off,... I dunno, a Beretta or something? I'm only assuming the larger TB is coming from some other GM car.
Help a newbie out. I'd like to put the Cavalier in the winners circle. Since I switched to a Chevy from a Honda, I've recieved a lot of good comments and support for racing a domestic. So I just want to prove it was the right decision.

I'm going to the scrap yard this weekend. What cars would I find this motor in? Certain year Cavaliers?
Wasn't there a Quad4 in old Grand Ams?
if i was in your shoes, i would diffently consider swapping to a 2.3L HO or a 2.4L Twincam. the 2.2L isn't the best engine as far as acceleration and top end. i would sit that thing down a little lower for better handling, and not that it matters, but you got the wrong headlight stickers

First, I know they are the wrong headlight and tail light stickers. I think they are for a 2000 Cavy. But they were free, and from the stands, most people won't know the difference.
Second, the class I'm in is stock. I have to run a motor that was available for the make, model, year of car. Also, I can't have DOHC, 16 valves, or turbo. And it has to be a 4 cylinder.
So if I want to run this car, it looks like I'm stuck with the 2.2. At least until they open the rules up a little, then I could drop in the 2.4
I know I have to get the car lower as well. It was just built, and because of the weight reduction, (1996 lbs right now) the stock springs make the car sit right up. Again because of rules, I can't swap in after market springs, or even cut the springs. Though I am looking into maybe swapping in another set of springs from something lighter. (maybe a Sprint?) Against the rules, but one that isn't enforced too hard, especially if it isn't obvious.
you cant just swap your springs out.
you have to get new struts too that are made for lowering.
check the suspension and brake forum.....its all that people talk about.
i wasn't flamming you. i assumed that was the cercumstances for the headlight stickers. that kinda stuff doesn't matter anyway, just an observation.
both the 2.3 HO and 2.4L are DOHC and both are were availible in that car. but since the rules say no cams than yeah, your stuck with that engine.
and i understand about the ride height, especialy with a weight reduction. looks like your best bet is to find some different springs that are not so obvious. have you or can add strut braces and/or other suspension add-ons? they are some of these parts available on our cars, stock.but you may not need that kinda stuff with that role cage. i bet it makes the car stiff by itself.
researching stuff like throttle bodies and other stuff is your best bet for more power

^^^^^^He is in a stock class, he can't swap the struts. Lowering struts are made for a car where the centered travel point is lower... some of them offer a larger damping force to avoid bouncing too but that isn't as common as you would expect.
Unfortunately, you're a little out of luck as far as springs go. You may be better off "bending the rules" and raising the mount pounts of the struts. Cut off the top of each of the strut tower mounts and weld them back in an inch or so higher.... my only suggestion. You can use the sway bar and struts from one of the LS sport cavaliers as well for better handling
You can find the quad 4 in almost all of the GM economy cars from the early 80s to the mid 90s... you can't miss the IDI cover. Check olds cutlas, chevy baretta, potiac grand am, 95 cavalier, ect....
I'm also still going to go with my previous statement in the other post. Get a sohc quad 4 motor and swap in the pistons from the high output versiom, giving you 10:1 compression. The intake manifold will swap over as well giving you one hell of a stock class car.... you're talking 150-160hp.

I went to Standard Auto Wreckers on the weekend. They had a deal where you pay $45, and you can have all you can carry out. Unfortunately all the 3rd Generation j-bodys had the engines and trannys removed. I was hoping to find a 2.4 tranny, for the gears.
I did find lots of 2.2s though, so I did get lots of spare parts for the race car. Also, from the recommondations from you guys, I grabbed a throttlebody from a Quad 4 out of a Grand Am.
Problem is, (I should of checked this before I left) the throttle body on my 2.2 Cavalier is completely different. It is a huge one piece item that is also part of the intake plenum. How do I put a bigger TB on this car? Do I have to cut off the TB part, and drill and tap new holes to mount the bigger TB? Has anyone done this? I thought the Quad4 TB was more or less a bolt up affair.
I want/need a bigger TB, but I don't see how it can be done without doing some obvious surgery.

What do you have done performance wise? Could you just run an open exhaust? Also can you port the head, aftermarket header? I am not sure what your limitations are in the stock class

I run an open exhaust, lightened the flywheel, everything else is stock. I'm thinking of porting the intake and the exhaust. I also ditched the power steering.
Rules say everything has to be stock. Porting technically is against the rules,...but it is still a stock part
I've also played the camber and alignment
