So I like the look of HDR photos so I thought I would give it a try. Im not really too sure what im doing and it didn't really turn out the way I wanted it, looks a bit grainy or fuzzy. I used the same picture 3 times and just changed the exposure of 2 of them in photoshop. Then used photomatix to create the HDR. Sound right? If any one has any tips or comments please share I would love to know how do these good. Enough with the chat here is the pic...... Let me know what ya think.

you arent supposed to make 2 different exposures in photoshop. you are supposed to take at least 3 pictures. plus that flare on the rear fender looks fake. did you add that in?

no i didn't add the flare in. I know you are susposed to take three photos at different exposures. But you can use a single photo and use photoshop to change the exposure. then i use photomatix to make the HDR

but that defeats the purpose

HDR is about capturing dynamic range

so you take one photo. then you take one over exposed to catch the highlights, then one underexposed to catch the shadows. then you combine all 3

1 photo doesnt have the range to do that properly

try it, you will see a difference

Adjusting the exposure of a photo in photoshop isn't going to give you the same results as taking multiple exposures with a camera. I'm ready for this HDR fad to die.

High dynamic range

Yeah i know a bit about them ive done some reading and watch some videos. Like i said i just wanted to give it a try it looked pretty cool.

More and more people are jumping on the HDR bandwagon but are completely missing the point of an HDR. It's not to make a picture look retarded and fake, the whole point of HDR is make the picture look REAL. The human eye has a lot more dynamic range then any camera. Right now I'm sitting in my room with the light on, I can look out the doorway through the hall which is a bit darker, into the bathroom that's pretty dark and into the shower which is completely dark. My eyes can see all 4 levels at once, a camera can not. If it;s exposed to the bright room I'm in it wont see all the darker levels, they will appear black, If I expose the picture for the almost complete dark in the shower the room I'm in while glow solid white in a picture. The whole point of HDR is to combine exposures to replicate our eyes and make the picture look as real as possible.

I love the look of them I just dont have the proper equipment or know how to get results like that. I was trying the ones from a single photo with the exposure changed through photoshop. i know its not the real way to do it, i just found some tutorials on youtube and thought i would give it a try.

One of the problems that you will run into with trying to get too much range out of an image is the halo effect that you are seeing in your pictures. The problem is that the compositing algorithms are currently unable to add a high level of processing with great accuracy, so they have to fade between areas to blend the exposures.

If you really want to try to make an HDR image work right, you're better off using some careful cutting and pasting of your image and creating many layers of each section you cut. You can then adjust the lighting and color levels on each layer, and blend them to get the clarity you're looking for. This is extremely tedious, but if you are good enough, the end result will be better than a regular HDR composite.

The excellent examples that Darkstars posted are also most likely taken with high end cameras set up for doing HDR, and the photographers have experience blending HDR frames without overprocessing them.

The bottom line, as with anything like this, is to practice until you can get the realism without the side effects.
