finally...working toward paint. :-)

So after going back and forth between just throwing the car back together so I could drive it this summer, or tearing it down for paint, the latter won out. I decided it's time to strip it all out and start painting. My plan is to paint the whole engine bay and front end, and do the entire front suspension (powder coating the subrame and all), then get it back together and move to the rest of the exterior. Anyway, I worked on pulling it all apart for a couple of hours today. Hopefully tomorrow I'll finish it all up and have the engine compartment completely stripped of everything, but we'll see how it goes. Enjoy the last of the dirty engine bay pics.

Been there... The bay is so tedious, it seems like it takes forever just to prep that small area. At least you're doing it right though and not rattle canning it black like so many others..... Good work, can't wait to see how everything turns out.

Yeah, engine bays suck.

So many little crevices that have to be sanded, cleaned out, and then you have to make sure the paint gets in there. But it will be worth it when you can't tell the color isn't original.

And no rattle can jobs here. The only one was the flat black it's been for 4 years. LOL. I had planned on only having it like that for one summer, but sh!t happens.

Nope, you didn't miss it. I haven't said. Let's just say that it was a unique color when I decided that's what I wanted, but there are now similar colors available on stock vehicles.
It will definitely be different for a J though.

And the V6 will be looking sweet when done as well. I just haven't exactly decided on what I'm doing with it yet.

Thanks for the comments. Got pretty much done what I wanted to for today. Engine and tranny are out, all wiring harnesses are out, brake booster (yes, that's out--personal pet peeve of mine when people just bag the booster and try to paint around it.

), throttle cable, wiper motor assembly, and strut bar. Next weekend I'm planning on getting all the rest of the small stuff (brake lines, fuel lines, etc.) out, and dropping the subframe and suspension out. Then I get to start stripping, blasting, grinding, and sanding.

well since the engine and tranny are already out, you might as well slap them down into my red and white z and get you another engine

so keeping the color under wraps until its done? or are you just waiting til you get the engine bay finished to show us?

Not sure you want the tranny. LOL. It's nasty. I'm going to strip it and put some better parts (actual Isuzu parts) in it. I'm shooting for the 4.11 FDR.

Not sure yet.

I'd like to keep it under wraps until the car is done, but sometimes I have a hard time.
If it comes out the way I want, I'll probably have to post it up.

OK, so I don't have pics to put up, because I can't seem to find my camera, but here's a quick little update.

Today I dropped the subframe, and pulled the brake lines, and removed everything from the subframe. Then I spent a little time with a wire wheel in the engine bay and blew it all out to see what I was actually looking at for rust damage. To my surprise, there is no structural damage anywhere, which I was fearing, since I have a lot of surface rust. Also, a good portion of the subframe looks almost brand new, thanks to an oil leak in the 2.2 keeping the rust away.

The only thing left to do is pull the steering column into the car, and then put some cardboard and tape over the inside of all the holes leading to the interior, then pull the rear brake lines and the fuel lines. Absolutely everything else is out, and the subframe has been stripped.

I'll be sending the subframe off to be blasted and powdercoated soon, while I work on hitting all the nasty spots in the engine bay with a wire wheel, then probably some light blasting, before sealing it and priming it. I'm very happy with the condition of everything overall, so I'm hoping for a pretty smooth process here, and if all goes well, by the fall, I'll be slowly puting it back together, making sure to clean and/or paint everything before it goes in. Hopefully I'll find my camera soon, and I'll post a few pics by tomorrow.
