trans seperated, flyhwheel and clutch off... Snowman, I'll be using the Isuzu 5spd trans

Also installed one of the 2 trans mounts.... need to jack up the car to get the other one out and installed....

test fitted the new upper mount as well after giving it a quick polish:

Migraine kept me from continuing.

make sure you clean up that engine bay before anything goes back in

Keep it up

A side note: the 3800 supercharger fits on the 3400 nicely with an adapter plate

You need a custom lim and then all other fuel mods and crap to set up for boost. Then you would figure something out for an idler pulley, need a custom hood, etc etc etc.

you should focus on the 3.4 setup for now, and a turbo setup will be better than the supercharger i think.

Out of curiosity, what happens to ye olde 2.2? Go-kart?

Pops is going to use it for a generator engine.

3400 is staying NA for now... main priority, get it in and running. Fun comes later

Started on the diff insert install since 1) I still need a couple parts for the engine and b) weather wasn't up to having me work outside and 3) I'm not too savvy w/ trans internals...

took a night off working on the car... too sleepy and frustrated to focus.

few of the new gauges came in (won't be able to use the stock cluster based on what I've read so far...)

Fuel

I know these are blurry...

Water temp:

(not sure why I ordered this one, but...) and outside air temp:

Speedo and tach are backordered...

A few updates... Oregon Auto in Milwaukie OR (however that's spelled) got me an engine harness (for the right year this time) for 125 shipped

Inspected the harness, need to figure out what a couple of the plugs are for, and replace one or 2 (but I have an extra one here from the wrong year 3400 -- injector harness is different), then that's where the *fun* begins

Installed the other trans mount, removed the lower intake (bong), started prepping for the Addco front sway bar (bye-bye FE1 bar, hello 25mm bar ).

I love clearance sales @ Summit

Got the engine mount bracket (94-97 3100 bracket) -- will be removed, cleaned and painted.:

Trans is still disassembled at the moment (need to get new spider gears )

Also started putting in the CA bushings (I'm going to repaint the CA's before I put them back in, also need to get new ball joints and tie rod boots as well...)

I forgot about this sleeve:

when putting in the CA bushings... I was wondering why my press wasn't getting the rear bushing in.

Till next time...

just wondering, are you going to buy a 3400 wiring setup or try to adapt the 2.2 eco wiring to the 3400 computer?

Re: 3400 swap begins - 56k = maybe

Why are you going with a 3400?

It may be begging the question, but would a 3800/sc not be a more worthwhile swap? even a 4.3 Northstar?

I've never thought of the 3400 as a worthwhile swap unless the engine is built up and S/Ced. Either way, good luck man.

Sunfire didn't have an Eco... just the 2.2 OHV -- I have the full 3400 wiring setup (including ECU).

I can't weld worth crap, so I'm going with the more "bolt-in" method.

In the end though, I'll be increasing WHP and torque by at least 50%, so even the 3400 is worth it -- heck, even an Eco would be a step up from the OHV motor.

Just as a Q, but won't you still need to weld-in the lower engine mount and tranny mount regardless? Or have you found an assistant for that one?

Coming along nicely, where do you plan on mounting the gauges? Any idea if the odometer will still work?

tranny mount? I'm not aware of a 3rd tranny mount for the 5spd.

1 gauge is replacing the driver's side dash vent, the rest are going in the cluster housing.

the speedo I'm getting has a digital odometer built in, so it'll still work.

Spent this week doing some maintenance stuff.. new ball joints, ordered new tie rod ends, finished the CA bushings and gave the control arms a shot of paint:

Had to take it easy, tweaked my back pretty good earlier this week...

Got the sway bar in, need to finish torquing down the subframe though:

Put the engine on a stand so i can change the flywheel...

test fitted the engine cover (and finish taking the sticker stuff off the adapter) -- cover is OEM on a Venture:

hehehe... there is a method to my madness. Figured I'd also get the rather large box of parts that I've accumulated over time installed while the engine is out (it was that much easier getting the sway bar in sitting on a stool in the engine compartment )

Just need to have a lower engine mount bracket welded up. I'm going to get the dimensions mapped out and drop them off at a shop to have that taken care of.

I've never thought of the 3400 as a worthwhile swap unless the engine is built up and S/Ced. Either way, good luck man.

The 3100/3400 swaps are far simpler than the 3800 swap, because most of the parts are available off the shelf to fit it in. Also, not only are the 3100/3400's still plenty quicker in stock form than the 4-bangers, but they have lots of potential. There was a video up on (IIRC) 60degreev6.com of a 95 Camaro with a 3.4 making some serious power, and it was on the stock internals, which are the same as the FWD 3400's.

As for the Northstar, that's a hell of an undertaking. It will not fit without major mods. I'm dying to try that swap myself, but I want to finish the one I started first. (I'm fighting the urge right now to pick up the 4.0 from an Aurora that's for sale near me.)

Ignore the tranny mount, I was on crack.

We're also still patiently waiting the reasoning behind the Isuzu tranny.

Oil pressure sender is installed. Water temp sender installed (in preperation of dropping the engine in... there's not much clearance there).

Need to cut some spacers for the AC compressor this weekend as well.

Since I've had a few questions, here are the LED bulbs that I've installed up front:

Not much else new... recouping from back pain... if all goes well though, engine should be in the hole this weekend... trans on the other hand

@quiklilcav, thanks for the added info

Also, as for the supercharger reference, there were 12 or so Magnason chargers that GM released to the public. Due to low demand, that was it. RSM (read = crap) has a bolt-on blower out for the 3400, but with the $4k price tag and the bad rep that they have had thus far...

The 3800 blower doesn't really bolt up nicely.
