?'s about new tires
Thursday, August 31, 2006 10:55 AM
It came to me today that I need a new set of tires before the winter time. The only place I tried was discount tires, I'd perfer to go with them, since they would give me a better deal. And I HATE Beltire with a passion. Now, here is my quesion. They showed me some tires today and I really liked the Goodyear Assurance Triple Tred. They about 90bucks a tire. They quoted me at 435 for everything (mounting, ballancing, alignment). I was wondering if there was anything better or similar equilivent but at a cheaper price and/or does anybody have any experience with these tires? I will be using these tires all year round, so I dont plan on getting wheels for a long time Or, if anybody has a place that they recomend, to where they have had exceptional service and still has a decent price?

Thanks in advance

dan

that tire is a waste on a 14.

the most you would need is a Dayton Quadra SE. about 59-60 bucks each; or a Bridgestone SE200 (if they make that size) $79-99.00

195 is the distance in millimeters across the face of the tire
70 is the proportion of your tire height to it's width (some people call this sidewall size)
R is that it is radial construction
14 is your wheel size.

Treadwear is kinda of useless, it's a measurement of the longevity of your tire in CONTROLLED simulation. (i.e. not actual road driving, turning, braking, potholes, bumps, etc) but you can expect it to. And it doesn't compare between different manufacturers. Bridgestone to bridgestone, firestone to firestone, but not across. Anyway, a tire with 800 would last 4 times as long as a tire with 200. But what that amount of time is obscure.

Traction is your tire's ability to WET stop AA being the highest, A being next, etc.

Temperature is the relative heat your tire runs with. A being the coolest, B being second coolest, C warmest. If properly inflated, don't worry about the temperature rating, unless you live in the desert or plan on driving across magma or up a volcano.

Speed rating is also an obfuscated term. A lot of people buy tires with these super high speed ratings because they think it will help traction. It won't. Those speed ratings are for sustained speeds (upwards of 10 minutes). You will be safe buying a low speed rating that gets you to 100 MPH and you will save a few dollars. (on an aside. a lot of top fuel dragsters, funnycars, etc will use cheap, light, low speed rated tires on their front wheels, because even though they get above 200 MPH, the front tires will probably come up and the car will ride on it's wheelie bars all the way. you too can have low speed rating tires on your cavalier and do 108, but don't plan on sustaining it all day on the autobahn.)

hope that fills in your gaps.

Cool, that helps ALOT! Kinda funny that you mentioned the Daytona Quadra SE ... beacause that is what I have on there right now. I've only had them for about ... 40k miles, if not even longer. I just need to rotate my tires more often so I can get more even tredware. And, I tend to have about 95% good driving habints recently. And, I have grown to become that I just have a cavalier and that I'd be lucky to light up a single tire for about 5 seconds

I think im going to go with the samd ones I have on there now. Thank you very much Kevin

I put a set of TripleTreds on my g/f's 05 Accord LXSE coupe. Excellent all season tire. My g/f commutes 60 miles total for work, and she had no problems in the winter.

Pricey, but worth consideration.

Maybe check these out...

check these out also, if you can't find some quadras in your area. Tirerack doesn't carry Dayton. (but they carry general, the worst tire company EVAR).

Click

Also, Dunlop is offering free sunglasses with a purchase of 4 tires.
