Smoking in the Morning...... Turbo popped ???
Wednesday, October 12, 2005 8:16 AM
Hey guys.... Another question.....

I get in my car in the morning to start it... start it and everything is running fine..... No CEL, no weird idle.... Nothing... just smooth....

however... maybe 20 seconds in it starts to smoke (oil smoke) and I HAVE to drive the car to get it to stop.... but it does stop....... Just takes upwards of 5 minutes of driving to stop it from smoking... No cat and no Muffler on my 3" exhaust....... I don't have too much pressure in my turbo..... I know that ....

so why would it smoke at cold start up then stop after I drive the car ?????
oh and under boost.... NO SMOKE...... just at cold start up...

PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTION AND NOT BRANCH OFF THIS POST...

Thanks

Lee

I have a restrictor that brings my pressure in my feed line down to just below 20 psi...........
from a 4 an line to a pin hole......... I know there isn't much pressure going in the turbo...
should I try my block heater in the morning to see if the oil already warmed will be better ????

Thanks.

the one thing I might think of is there might be a crack or some sort of leak on your turbocharger if smoke is coming out of your exhaust. The reason for it to stop might be because the turbocharger got warm up and the metal expanded which kinda seals the cracks a little bit so no more oil to leak into the exhaust. Worse senario would be oil leak out of the exhaust outlet.

ya I know my turbo is amost pooched because when I installed it..... the oil line that I got was running more psi then the turbo could handle... I can see excessive sweating on the turbos oil seals....so... this leads me to believe that my turbo is almost gone.... I'm in the process of getting a new oil seal kit for the turbo.... not a full rebuild kit.... but just the seals........ around 100 so not too worried...

Anyone else have an opinion on this ????

Lee, there's a place in missisauga called Dal's fuel injection. This guy primarily does diesel turbo rebuilds, but he also does other turbo's too. My dads company frequently uses Dal's for all of his turbo rebuilds. Good thing is that he is close to you. Lokk it up in the phone book. Sorry I don't have any info on the phone number.

Lee,

Are you really wanting to send it in somewhere or just buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself? It's not hard at all. You can get a list of authorized distributers from TurboByGarrett.com. Personally I recommend Precision Turbo. They are in FL I believe but they are AWESOME guys.

Probably a lil over a hundred bucks. Now, you can save a hundred bucks, buy the seals, and rebuild the turbo yourself... it doesn't really take a weekend to do ya know.

yes but I have never done it before..... do I just have to take off the bolts from the outside slide out the wheel housing from the turbo and replace the seals??? I'd feel much better if they did it... but it would definitely take longer if I bring it to them.... either way the turbo is coming off..... $100 is nothing to spend to fix my turbo......

Thanks a lot....

Oh by the way.... Does anyone have a DIY on a turbo rebuild...... since I'm doing the simple oil seals replacement..... it shouldn't be that hard.....
right.....

I typed this up a while ago. One thing I noticed that I missed is that the compressor wheel bolt is reverse-threaded. To replace the two oil seal rings you need to just pry them up with dentist's picks or something similar. They are fragile. They will snap if you aren't very careful. Put the replacements on just as carefully.
Another thing is that after all of the turbine bolts are loose, you may need to hit it with a hammer to get it to unseat. If you hit it hard and it doesn't come, heat it witha torch and then do the same until it comes loose, then continue to take the bolts out.

Right. The center section is a pain in the ass to get apart. Often you do have to heat it and beat the hell out of it.

Well, there was a guy a work that is a turbo dodge guy with a decently fast car. He decided to rebuild his turbo, seals and all...didn't get it balanced. He broke in his turbo again like always and didn't beat on it, his first pull getting into boost after a week, he heard a buzzing sound and he blew his motor. He shattered his compressor impeller, all the shards went into his motor and lost the motor. All because of him trying to save $50.00 on balancing. Is it really worth trying to rebuild a unit that spins in excess of 130,000 rpm without the proper equipment. Just get Dal's to do. They're 30 minutes from you. Got a problem with it, your only 30 minutes from the fix. They do very good work. It's your choice.

I helped my buddy rebuild his turbo(bearings and all) for right at $100 USD. we marked everything and lined it all back up right , and no problems yet,(at least 4K miles on the rebuild) but yo never know...personally if it was my car, I would have a pro do it, so I could blame them if it broke

Okay this is

Dals is telling me $50.00 for the hot side oil seal.. and they WILL NOT rebuild it for me.... They don't do that work... unless it's a complete rebuild...
They said something about supersonic cleaning that NEEDS to be done if your replacing the oil seal..... anyone in canada on the site that knows how to rebuild a turbo I'll pay you once I recieve the seal.... I'm kinda nervious to take apart my turbo... he said It could be done.... he just didn't recommend it...........

They want $650.00 for a rebuild of the turbo........ I bought my turbo for 500..........

so thats out of the question....

Will I break anything on the turbo if I rebuild it....... like is there anything to watch for when you rebuild.....

Thanks

Lee

In order to get to the turbine oil seal.... you have to remove the compressor and turnine housings, pull the center nut off the turbine shaft at the compressor wheel, remove the shaft and wheels, then replace it.
First off, t he compressor seal is right there in the open to do too.
Second, the only thing left to a "rebuild" would be to acid dip the center section, take out the outside snap rings and drop in a new set of $25 bearings..... that all costs $600 extra!?
