Boosting an 01' z24

Ok so recently I bought a 2001 cavalier z24 and I want to turbo it but I don't want to swap the engine out for an ecotec. I was thinking about running 6-8 lbs of boost but the car is stock and I fear blowing the engine, so what are some things I could reinforce to run just a few pounds? I don't want to run anything like 15 or 20 because that seems like too much work but if it's just as much to run up to 8 I may do it. Sorry if this dosent make much sense its very late and I'm very tired, so if anything is unclear please tell me and I'll try to clarify.

do it up! you will be fine to run 6-8 lb on a stock motor. ne thing after that you will wanna get rods and pistens. You will need to find all the turbo parts ( search for them), a 2 bar map and a fmu or hp tuners. good luck man.

There are no kits made but turboing a 2.4 is very doable. The only benefit there would be to for the ecotec guys is hahn makes a complete kit. You have the upperhand as far as fueling and tuning goes. Basically you just mimic the GM supercharger kit for the 00-02 2.4 meaning you use the same 310cc injectors, map sensor and computer reflash. The stock GM reflash for he supercharger can be modified with HPtuners later down the road for more power and also to allow the use of bigger injectors.

I know from experience you should be fine on a running low boost with the gm reflash on a stock engine.

I would check the classifieds on here and see if another member might have a kit they made for their 2.4 for sale.

i've always meant to ask this, but is it alright to run the reflash on a turbo build without having to change any values for daily driving? I don't have HPT yet, but when i get it i won't know fully how to use it right out of the box. so 7-8 lbs of boost is perfect.

You will be fine with the reflash.

6-8psi is fine with an intercooler and proper fuel mods, and you are lucky with the 01 z2.4 to use hpt

I guess i should have been a little more detailed, my bad.

My compression will be roughly 10:1 (i figured it out to be 10.1:1 with .040"overbore 9:1 pistons and a .074" thick headgasket) with the 086 head and either HO or turbo grind cams (from LZM)

obviously i'll be running 94octane but how about now...will it still be driveable without a custom tune right away? I may need to drive it for anywhere up to a month at the utmost worst case scenario (gasp* i know, i'm working on sourcing out a good time/place to get a proper tune) and yes i'll be intercooled. 31x9x3 with endtanks. and a 7psi spring in the wastegate.

think it can be done? if not, i guess shifted is my only answer.

What? with the proper tune, 300-350 can be gotten with a stock 2.4 (00-02) but it would be wise to at least put a melling oil pump in.

HPT, oil pump, good turbo and supporting mods, 300-350 WHP is easy.

BUT at the VERY LEAST get the GM 2 bar tune, and 40# injectors.

300-350 whp is effing pushing it, if it can even be done on a stock motor, regardless it will not last for long, if he is asking about 6-8psi, chances are he just wants something a lil more fun to play with on the road not a monster, i already stated he would need a 2 bar and other suporting mods. if you want 300 or more hp i'm pritty sure it would be wise to start bilding a motor, if it has been done and lasted on a stock ld9, then i will say sorry but i'm pritty sure 250 would be the highest i would want to go on a ld9. the motor is known for spining crank barings (usualy on #3 piston) and poor oiling. that doesnt say 350 hp to me. reliability is what alot of ppl want when they boost, for that little extra pull. but thats just my $0.02......

I know a little about Quads......

for a 2 bar you would have a 00Up, there not known for Rod's going.

How many boosted cars have you built?

and you do know it has been done right?

With proper fueling, tuning, and maintenance, the stock 2.4 can make 300hp+..... I pushed it with my stock motor (before the turbo, and with the turbo), and had very limited tuning (GM Reflash + Adj. FPR + 320cc Injectors), but still had great results, 12.8@110mph on 15psi. (many passes in the 13.1-12.9 range as well) It held up to daily driving, track beatings, and autocrossing...... wasn't until I had a "user error" with the Adj. FPR that I melted down 2 pistons...... but even then, after 55k HARD miles, the rod bearings looked almost new.

I would stick with the 2.4, but what would I know? (how many eco's on here in the 400hp+ range? or even 350hp+ range?)

yes i am sure it is done right....i'm just saying i would like to have a motor last more then 55k HARD miles and i wont be trying it...... but i'm glad it has been done congrats. i'm sticking to my 7 psi.
