missing on an engine can be a huge problem, missing on a boosted engine usually guarntees it.

However, you might be able to make out like a bandit if you play your cars right. alot of time cars will miss for very stupid reasons, plugs injector seals whatever, if you can pinpoint the problem then you might have a golden oppertunity, if the guy told you that is missing, then he doesnt know whats wrong with it, and hes probably willing to give it away for the price of a torn up engine.

my suggestion go run a compression check, and while your doing it check the plugs. if its neither of those then stay away.

Out of curiousity why would you say that, and what would you recomend looking for plug wise??

I ask becase I have a mis in my car that I am diagnosing. I agree that misfires can be huge problems, but they can also be very minor....I would say that is true for both boosted and non-boosted.

For example my car has a number 3 misfire, compression is within 2% of all other cyl. Spark plug shows very little signs of combustion, with no carbon build up (all others show rich burn patterns). I would tend to believe it is an ignition, possibly fuel related. To me that is not a big deal.

Are you saying that if compression is consistant, and the plug has a similar burn pattern to the others THEN he should stay away? I would agree to do some evaluation before you purchase, but I would be more inclined to leave it there if there were no compression....That tells me internal damage. Do you have any specs on his rebuild?

I think he meant to say if it IS EITHER of those stay away. Low compression in one cyl will cause a misfire and is a good indicator of a blown headgasket or a damaged piston or valve. The plugs will give you a good idea if it were running to lean. If one of the plugs gap was no longer existent-completly smashed shut this would be a dead give away that a broken peice of piston pushed it closed. Any of these things would mean that the engine would need to be repaired/replaced.

hey rob, I still think it's the stock computer holding the cav back and causing it to miss (ie tune). i was having that issue with the car before i sold it to chris. i made mention of it in another post a long long time ago.

you can see in this graph where the computer kicked in and started to miss.

all i did was turn the boost down and the problem went away. get hptuners for the car and a better ignition system. also is the engine built or just replaced? If it was me, I'd have an extra 5k to throw at a built engine (if it wasn't built already) and an ignition system.

Ha!! I know that i have been gone a while but i figured it out , the ignition b wire that controls spark on the 2nd and 3rd cylinders was pinched and cut at some ponint in the reinstall process. fix the wire and like friggen magic the car is running right again. And just so you know the motor wasn't rebuilt it had to be completely replaced. but i should be having it tuned within a few weeks w/HPT.
