Quick question about turbo ehaust housing
Tuesday, February 19, 2008 3:17 PM
I just had a quick question Im sure someone could help me out with. I need to rotate my turbo exhaust housing so its clocked right, and I cant seem to get the exhaust housing off. The 6 bolts are out, but whats a good way to get it off without doing any damage to the wheel? I dont want to try to tap it off and damage any of the fins somehow, so just seeing what others have done in tis situation. The turbo has 0 miles on it since rebuilt by garrett.

That sounds wierd, i just have to crack mine is all and then it spins really easily. both intake and exhaust are that way.

Yea the compressor side does fine, but the exhaust side doesnt. I had to spray a dab of pb blaster on the exhaust housing bolts and tap them off to even get them loose. I know for a fact that it was rebuilt by garrett recently and has o miles on it since so idk.

Anyone?

You shouldnt need to take the housing off to clock it, or the bolts all the way out, you just loosen & spin....

Sounds like it may be seized up? It should definitely spin with them merely cracked open.

I have no idea why it would be seized, it spins freely and everything appears fine. Maybe Ill try holding it up on the compressor somehow and gently tapping the exhaust side. Thanks for the help though guys.

Yeah, try tapping it but be very careful.

Well I got it broke loose. Took some pb blaster and just ran it along where it seals and let it sit, then tapped it a bit each way and it broke loose. I realy dont think it has any problems as the turbo spins fine and doesnt have any play in the shaft but Ill see when I run it lol. I was getting realy pissed about to buy another new one haha.

If the compressor side rotates, doesnt that mean the turbine side is rotating too? I mean, it really doesnt matter which moves because if one moves, that is changing the relationship of the two, thus 'clocking' the turbo.

If you rotate the compressor your just changing the compressor side. I wanted to clock my turbo because I wanted my compressor side to face the driver side of the car without the return fitting facing upward lol. If you wana flip the turbo youll have to rotate the exhaust housing thats where it bolts to the manifold.

Ah, I understand. I thought you just needed to change the direction of air flow. I didn't realize you were changing it so drastically that the oil ports would be in the opposite direction

Yep, just flipping it around and had to rotate the exhaust so my feed was facing down towards the pan. 10an feed and 4an with reducer return would be bad haha.
