Searched, but can't compile all the GM s/c answers
Tuesday, February 05, 2008 2:02 PM
Obviously looking into the GM Supercharger for my 2004 Sunfire with a 2.2 Ecotec, and have a few basic questions, all of them are pretty much yes/no

1). It comes with EVERYTHING I need, right?
2). Being a mild boost application, does it need a downpipe?
3). If so, is it mild enough that good headers will work?
4). Will an aftermarket 2.25 inch exhaust with a 2.5" Magnaflow cat fit my exhaust needs?
5). Is it compatible with a new 62mm throttle body?
6). Can I use my current short ram intake with this?
7). It is ABSOLUTELY necessary I go with a big break or rear disc conversion? I'm already upgrading to powerslot rotors, hawk pads, and stainless steel lines
8). Since I"m going boosted, any ignition/electrical upgrades I need to consider?
9). I believe the unit is self intercooled, can i/should i hook up another intercooler? Will that increase horsepower, or just make it more reliable?
10). Will it considerably raise engine temps?
11). Will it negatively affect my transmission life?
12). If I'm running a 1,800 watt RMS ( 4,400 Peak), with a 200ish amp alternator, (since from what i understand s/c are pulled based?) will that alternator/sound system affect the performance of the s/c?
13). Will the RKsport underdrive pulley positively/negatively affect my sound system OR my supercharger, with the upgraded alternator?

Thanks in advance!

If you don't mind referencing the particular # question you are answering, i'd appreciate it! You learn by asking, right?

1) yes - the aftercooler setup is something you should look into tho.
2) Its a supercharger and it doesn't need a downpipe like you would for a turbo ( do you know how an S/Cr' works?). An upgraded exhaust would aid you in gains tho
3) A good header will help you out yes.
4) It will work ( the kit was made to work with a stock car) but if your lookin for better gains 2.5 is the min i would use from header back.
5) yes
6) You'll have to hack it up a bit, but yes you should be able to. Use your imagination.
7) No
8) You have to run 93 octane from then on to help avoid detonation
9) It has the hook up for an aftercooler like i mentioned in # 1. I would strongly suggest you do upgrade.
10) running temps will still be around 195 ( IATS will be up due from the charger tho but thats where the aftercooler comes into play)
11) Boosting any car puts more stress on the tranny if you like to go out and play.
12) Your alternator is going to eventually die because the charger makes it spin backwards. Looking into a cobalt ss or Ion redline alternator and you'll be fine
13) Don't get it. Fine one thats stock sized. The tensioner can only take up soo much slack in the belt and you cannot just find a smaller size belt because they are double sided in this kit.

Thanks for the help. About #12...

I don't get the spinning backwards part?

I'm assuming the SS/RL alternators work differently than an upgraded alternator would?

Would you mind elaborating?

the cobalt alternators spin the oposite way then the cavalier ones....

there is no difference int he cavalier ones......they will spin backwards and overheat, cause the cooling fan is spinning backwards(in the alternator)

many havent run into problems but some have..so if you have problems you will need to get the cobalt ss/sc alternator

amperage wise, is it similar to the cav/sunfire alternator? If not, can I buy a high output cobalt ss alternator?
Also, why would gm sell the supercharger kit if it didn't always work with that alternator?

the SS alternator is more powerful than the Jbody alternators.

I have EVERYTHING you need to include SS alternator, cobalt SS header, and Heat exchanger setup all for sale as a whole. Easy dyno proven BOLT ON 248WHP

will cobalt ss headers bolt on to a 2.2 ecotec? and would they add more horsepower than regular 2.2 headers?

Yes but you will ahve to have a custom made collector for the exhasut system from what I remember when other have done the LSJ header on the L61.

I beleove the collector will be a bit short of the pick up and you'll need a custom piece to fit in between as well as a reducer if you are not going with a 2.5 inch full exhaust as the collector is 2.5 inch.

Your system listed was 2.25 with a 2.50 catback. You'll need to fill the gap from collector to cat.

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

we have had several consistent dyno results from different Js that have been 8WHP+/- by just adding the SS header in combination to the GMPP supercharger kit. I didnt change anything with the collector when switching from the pacesetter 2.2 header to the 2.0 header. All bolt on.
