If i want to boost my sunfire with a non eco 2.2....will i be able to...??
Tuesday, December 04, 2007 1:10 PM
I have a 96 sunfire with a 2.2 non eco motor in it. If i were to boost it now, and then swap a 2.2 ecotec motor and tranny into it later on, would i be able to transfer the turbo and all the piping, intercooler, etc. to the Eco motor??

Basically, just 2.2 non-eco to 2.2ECO...??

The intake and exhaust sides are swapped for the motors (the Eco exhaust side is on the firewall) -- assuming you can make these changes with your piping, then yes.

You will need a new Exhaust Turbo Manifold (OHV and eco will not be compatable)

I dont know if there is an oil fitting similar to the OHV motor on the Eco, but some simple adaptation can be made there.

I also dont know if the fuel system can be treated the same. The injectors may not be swappable.

Physically for the most part yes, the piping will need to be rerouted and you will need a new manifold.

Others should be able to provide details my brain lacks.

okay cool....sounds good. Now, the most a 2.2 OHV can daily drive on is ~6psi right?? and 92 or 93 octane?
Thats ~180hp, yes??

Can you... yes.
Should you? unless you plan to invest a lot of money then its not the best investment. its not the best motor to boost. some have done it and done it well but its just a lot of work to get that power out of it you are looking for.

^^ i disagree... as long as you tune it right on and don't go outrageous with it, it will take the boost just as good as any other car...

Jazers right, I boosted mine because i could get alot of my parts for cheap from a few buddies of mine. But we did everything right, and it came out well and pushes a nice amount of power.

Since you're using a 96 motor though, definitely do a top feed conversion and get bigger injectors to tune with, then you can swap them into the eco motor when you get it.

Also, what i was gonna do is swap my ECU to a 97? so that i could run HPT too....

Or, how can you tune the 96 motor once its boostin??

you have to swap computers to tune a 96. to a 97+ for hpt, or a 95- to use burnable chips. the 96 computer is not tuneable "yet". when you do swap to the eco though, are you aware of all the parts you'll need? honestly, i love my 2.2, but if a boosted eco is your final goal, then save the money and do it all at once.

im not saying it cant be done but its the lowest rated HP cav motor and is going to take more for the power he is looking for. i know of several that have awesome numbers out of it. but also awesome amount of money into it.

If you want to use HPTuners to tune it you have to make sure that its an OBD2 PCM.

And like Rich said, if your heart is with an ecotec swap in the future, it might be smart just to save your money for the swap, and do that instead of turboing the OHV.

As far as what Vincent said, yes STOCK it is a slow engine. But it doesn't take much to open it up, and it responds really well. I don't have a huge amount invested into mine and although i don't have dyno numbers or track times yet to post, i still know it pulls like a bat at outa hell when i need it to, or want it to The potential is 100% there just like ANY engine. Research is key.

That engine will boost well, but 6psi wont get you to 180. Closer to 8-9 with a good tune running on a stock engine, and who knows how long that would last. Best bet IMO, swap the ECO right Away and run 6psi on that. at 6psi the whp will be much higher out of an ECO, and i would trust it more. If you wanted to you could build you 2.2 OHV and still hit great numbers. 12psi with a good bottom and top end build, and a good tune would probably push you to 200, maybe a few more. 12psi on an ECO though would be higher than that.

I have the 2.2 OHV and the 2.2 LN2 2200 OHV. the newer if defiantly better than the older.

20 buck dyno run gave the old one 78whp.....that blows.

Bottom line, don't boost the OHV if you are going to swap, its a waste of time and money.

Its hard to say what PSI will give you what amount of power. It depends on the turbo you end up running...

You can say that at a certain PSI stock for stock an ecotec will give you more... although what about the extra money it takes to put into the swap itself for another stock motor. I personally would rather take that money and put it into the engine I currently have. Although thats just me.

As long as your tune is right on, and you dont beat the piss out of your motor all the time, and you take care of it... You can run more than 6psi safely.

The block is actually pretty sturdy... I know of many that have pushed it to 250 whp and beyond and are still not having problems. Your tune is the most important thing to keep in mind.

Purely opinion, but I wouldn't trust an ecotec as far as I could throw it. but as far as boosting them, ive seen all too many have something devastating happen. Including my own cobalt SS/SC, the motors been having problems since it had 14k miles on it, its still running, but barely. I could list 10 right now that have had problems in the last 6 months.

So as far as mark said about trusting one over another its a bias statement and purely opinion. Personal experience alters that. So it comes down to doing your research and finding whats best for you, trying stuff out yourself, and see what works or doesn't work for you.

Madking, my daily driver is boosted at 9psi. and loves it.

therein lies the problem. the 96 is an odb2 comp, BUT, its a funky one that no one has unlocked yet. hpt doesnt support the 96, so yes, the computer swap would need to be done.

just buy an 02+ cavy with the eco and get it done and over with. Screw the swapping everything, just buy a whole car in alot better shape then your 96' will be. then, after a while boost that when you've saved your pennies again. I had a 96' 2.2 and i wanted to swap in an 98' LD9. after some careful concideration and 7 months or building the engine, i realised i was a fool and just bought an 01 GT. Direct engine swap, no computer/harness/tranny swap or anything. It saves you the biggest headache ever, trust me. plus the eco has twice the amount of wires uyour 96 has, you need to re-wire the whole car! not just the dash, but everything. If you still want to do it, and you get it done, cutos. But i'm just saying, from this stand point it's not worth it at all.

Well, from all your responses here's what i want:

1st off, all im lookin for out of the car is somewhere between 200 - 250HP.....now, if anyone can tell me how easy or hard that is to get out of the 2.2OHV engine, then that would be GREAT...!

2nd, in the case of the ECO vs. non-ECO....i think i will stick with my OHV engine for now. I am going to probably swap it out later on though. The reason im not gonna do the swap and boost at the same time is because, i live down in GA, and its VERY hard to find J-body parts all over the place. Down here, all the people are into imports, MAINLY Hondas....

3rd, as far as re-wiring EVERYTHING in the car? i think i can get that done at a shop that one of my friends recommended and said that they do EVERY THING that you could possibly imagine to a car and that its very high quality work.

4th, thanks for all the good responses.

SO.....conclusion?? i think im just gonna build and boost my 2.2OHV. No swapping. lol, ill even go forged if i need to.
