hey i am putting a turbo on my 2200 in like 3 weeks. i live in pa and no one around here has hpt. i see everyone talking about a gm reflash and using the saab specs. can any gm garage do that reflash and what do i need to do to get it done? also imm planning on running between 6 and 6 psi for right now. i was wondering if the stock fuel system would be sufficient for 6 psi and would i need to adjust the timing if i wanted to run 8 psi? im new to the turbo and boost topics so any help would be appreciated. ohh and anyone know of where to get a oil dipstick kit to relocate it???
no reflash is available for the 2200, the gm reflash that is used with the saab setup only works with the ecotec engine. your only options beside HPT is an AFPR and a FMU or the Cartec FMU.
to pull timing you'll need either HPT or a MSD DIS2.
stock fuel system is not recomended for any turbo setup. you will need bigger injectors.
you can bend your oil dipstick, cut and weld it, or run your return in its place(not recomended). there is a company that makes a 2200 oil return dipstick but i forgot who makes it.
see what i dont understand is if hpt is the only thing i need to tune my car would it tune it to run 20 psi as well as 8? like i know i need alot of mods to run that much boost but will hpt take care of my timing and my fuel curve up to whatever boost i want?i only want to run 10-12 psi on my stock block after i get a new head gasket and studs. is there anything else we can use to tune our cars besides hpt? no one i know around here has it. can i send my computer to someone that has hpt and have them tune it and send it back to me if i put my car up to a wide band and get the specs i need?
hp tuners can adjust anything your computer has on it. i believe it only reads to 22 psi? or close to that.... but it can change everything about how your car runs as far as the PCM goes... if you don't want to buy the program, id suggest going on hp tuner's website and they have a map that shows tuner's locations across the US and you may find someone pretty local to you. Its hard for someone far away from you to tune it right on. Because tuning, especially fine tuning, needs minor adjustments, and some amount of trial and error. And many things factor into how it will effect the car.
You dont have that many choices, you can run HPT or an FMU to run
safely. You may not need to pull much timing, i know im pretty close to stock, as well as ive known some that have safely even bumped up timing over stock (atlast in some areas), it really depends on whether you are seeing knock retard or not... And in no way can you safely run the stock fuel system, especially with a 2200. Those are 19lb injectors.. ha... mine were over 100% duty cycle when i was lightly modded before i got turboed.. I am still using the stock pump, but you will deffinatly need to upgrade to injectors.
And especially if you plan to run 12 psi on the stock engine, you really need to make sure its tuned 100% accurately. You will be pushing the limits of the motor. Taking into consideration, all the factors that affect things, such as how the engine was taken care of, if it was beat on, how many miles, etc... with a very good tune, and as long as you don't beat the piss out of it all the time, it may be fine... but that is really almost impossible to say and is still going to be testing its limits. Im at 9psi on my stock block with a fully modified head. I personally wont be upping the boost until i put my new block in there. It all depends on what your willing to risk.
for larger injectors for a low boost app. you can use z24 injectors. i beleive they are 24lbs. i might be a little off. you can pick up a set cheap from a yard, or i might have a set you can have if i stop being so lavy nad pull them off my car.
I would recomend you read Maximum Boost by corky bell......two posts up from this you can download it for free...i just did.
Ill say im sorry now. Im new to some of this and live in newton iowa so there is not much more than hondas with coffey can exaust's and muscle cars running around here. I had a 06 supercharged cobalt ss but had to let it get reppoed before doing anything with it. What is HPT? I want to put alot of these cars in the dust and make them eat thier words. Ive got the 2200 non eco motor in my 96 cav and have already done the head gasket change due to it being blowen
.
for one, unless the motor was swapped, you have the older style 2.2, its not a 2200. the 2200 was introduced in 98.
You let a car get repoed and you are affording a trubo kit

Hahaha I was thinking the same thing.
why not learn about the stuff and research every thing until I'm able to get a kit? If you really want know why the car got repossessed then ask and be adult.
the gm s/c reflash works for a 2000+ 2200. i have one running in my car in my driveway. hpt can do it but i dunno how to get around paying 2 credits to be able to flash somebody else's file into your computer. s/c reflash is available on the website in the tune repository, although you have to be a customer to see any of it.
"...and then God said let the 2.2's have potential. Thats when hell broke loose..."
ok so i went to the auto parts store and been researching online. a master oem replacement fuelpump shuts off at 110 psi and there no posible way i need that muck fuel to run 8 psi or less. i was wondering if anyone has some numbers on what there runing for boost on a stock 2200 motor. let me first say i dont think anyone j body has had as much abuse as mine has.... its constantly at redline no matter where im going. i could be going to a funeral and im at 5700 rpms. ive been taslking to some ppl and they say that the cast pistons might not hold up to the heat of 8 psi. ill tell you exactly what will be done to my car before i run boost. rising rate fmu, at least 36 lb injectors from a grand prix gtp, fpr, intercooler, ssqv bov,t3/t4 to4e turbo, and getting it tuned by a tuning whiz.. i really want to be able to be semi reliable now im not stupid i know if im out hittin rev limiter and redlining the car everytime i take it out its not going to last but is anyone really runing a stock motor with no mods at all?im sending my spare block to the machine shop but it wont be done for a while im not even sure if it will be ready by summer time( money is tight at the moment). like i said im new to turbos and tuning i can tear my car apart from spark plug to lug nut but id rather ask for some help and advice before its just anouther slow j body.
im running 9 psi on my stock block with a modified head.. check my registry for all the mods on the car. its also HPT tuned.
The way you describe your driving scares me... I don't think you're intelligent and competent enough to be driving a turbo car... your display pic in your profile confirms this.
ok first off who are you? i mean not like it really maters but if you had any idea on the picture than you could make a stupid coment like that. second i didnt ask for idiots to post there opinion of my intelligence i asked for turbo help. and 3rd you have no idea who your talking about and the way i drive my car is the way and dsm or honda ppl drive there wide open throttle all the time. i didnt buy a car and put money into it to granny it around town if i wanted to do that id drive my grand am. i bought a j body because it will take any and all abuse i put to it. ive never blown it up nor have a replaced anything but tires and sparkplugs because of how i drive and ive had the car for 3 years. so next time someone feels like writing something incredibly stupid like that dont if you dont have inpute on the turbo aspect of my ? dont bother waisting ur time and mine.

I guess that includes school zones and where kids play, which makes you a real @!#$ idiot in my books. I sincerely hope you get busted for your kind of driving, because until you learn to drive your vehicle in a safe/controlled environment you're the idiot.
Also you say:
john zappernick wrote:m not stupid i know if im out hittin rev limiter and redlining the car everytime i take it out its not going to last
then you say
john zappernick wrote:i bought a j body because it will take any and all abuse i put to it.
Which just made me LOL at the contradiction
your an idiot go dream of piece of @!#$ rotary cars its a waist of time to ever respond to you you know nothing about the j platform you need to go join a honda or dsm forum with all the rest of the idiots out there.
so why did the car get repoed?
You must be referring to my profile, and yes I do like the Datsun 510 and yes, I do like the design of the wankel rotary due to it's light weight. Moreover, I won't join one of those sites because I don't OWN one of those cars, I OWN a JBODY. Furthermore, you should spend less time arguing with me on the internet and more time paying your bills because you'll get this current car repoed too

1) Spelling & punctuation... Use them, please.
2) I'm on a Honda board, and a couple of DSM boards... does that make me an idiot?
3) A 510 with a 13B would be a kick-ass ride, as would the rotary in the back of a bug.
Oh yeah, your pump may supply 110# of fuel, but that doesn't mean your injectors will take it... Stop trying to half-ass it and get some decent ELECTRONIC fuel management

Hey there, thanks for backing me up, the main reason why I'm so upset over him is because he takes pride in driving unsafely, which gives all other J-body owners a bad name. Fast driving is for the track or abandoned back roads IMO.
