2200 turbo or eco swap and charge it opinions plz
Saturday, May 13, 2006 8:54 AM
Just like the title says, I am thinking about doing the ecotec swap and then putting the gm charger on the engine. I have also thought about just turbocharging the 2200. Of course I would get another 2200 bare block and build it, but I am not sure on which I should do. That is why I am looking for opinions. I wouldn't run any more than 10 psi on the 2200 if I boosted it, so would the eco swap really be worth it? I know I would probably get more power at that same boost level on the eco depending on the mods done to the 2200 though. Any input on this subject is greatly appricated.

Thanks,
-Paul

the ecotec swap would be better for sure, just make sure you know what your getting into before you do it though. It's a little bit of work.

a 2200 turbo with stock internals is not capable of much

a 2200 with stock internals will get him about as far as an ecotec with the gm charger and the stock pulley....

Look, i'm a 2200 fan, so yes, i'm biased, but i'll try to give the best advice i can. You have a 2002. Its RIDICULOUSLY EASY (so far as engine swaps go) to put an eco in there, especially since theres no splicing of wires whatsoever (as long as you get the proper engine harness... make sure if your car has abs you get a harness with an abs plug!). However, depending on ecotec prices in your area, it MAY be cheaper to build the OHV if you can do it yourself, and then turbo it. This is assuming you have the skills/knowledge to do this properly.

If you're new to cars, the OHV is a good engine to learn on, and you can normally get a 2200 from the junkyard for CHEAP, like $200 or so. So you could always just buy a spare, and build it out of the car, and swap it in when you are ready. This would result in less downtime for the car as with an engine swap you will most likely find SOME part you forgot that you can't get until the next business day or whatever. Its all up to you. I would say that building a spare 2200 out of the car will teach you more than just swapping in an eco and slapping on a gm charger, and possibly cost less money, but ultimately an eco will have more overall potential.

An ohv with just forged rods and pistons, and a ported head, is typically safe to 250 hp within the stock redline.... the valvetrain, lifters especially, are a weak point above that power level and redline, however, if you're interested, search my username (jerseyjay) in the performance forum and you'll find a thread on OHV lifters. 250 hp should be enough for 12's depending on vehicle weight, tires, and driver ability, but i'm not going to benchrace. If you want well in excess of 300 hp, than go eco, definitely. Under that, its a matter of personal taste really. I like the underdog though.

Thanks for the input everyone. I think I'm going to do it since I have access to an engine/tranny with everything needed for a great deal. Where is the cheapest place to get the GM Charger?

Why not turbo the eco when you swap it in?

I'm a big fan of the ECO after having a 99 Z24 and an 03 LS.

I'm selling my HAHN turbo in favor of the GM SC, but the ONLY reason I'm doing it is because the GM SC is 50 state legal and I'm back in Cali and need that.

So Scarab, you said that the eco is easy to swap in because there is no splicing of wires, does this mean that the whole harness has to be swapped out, or not? Or is that just because he has the 2002, which had the eco as an option? I have a 2200 in my car with a big hole in the block, and I'm looking for ideas of what to do with it (I don't want to put in the same boring engine, if I put in another 2200 it will be built and turbo'd...) If the eco doesn't take rewiring the whole car, I'd rather swap in a built and turbo'd eco...

If you want an easier platform to get power out of the eco is the way to go.

Adler, you have a pm

if you have a 2000 or higher J body, the ecotec is a drop in install

You have to have the wiring harness tho... the harness is specific to the engine and transmission but it will only plug into the car if its 2000 or higher

LONG LIVE THE OHV !!! with its constant cooling problems, oil leaks, and numerous other maintenence annoyances paried with its legendary lackluster performance

Lets see... my OHV n/a:

RSM Intake
4:1 header
full exhaust with no cat
cat simulator
Motor mounts
Tranny mounts
MSD ignition
Magnecore wires
NGK plugs

Hand Ported and polished head by A&H engine dynamic race shop
Stainless steel valves (stock dia)
HD valve springs
chromoly locks
chromoly retainers

Total modification costs: ~$2700

best e/t and trap speed: 15.7
best trap speed: 86mph
best 60': 2.20 on crappy tires
best dyno: 115whp and 130wtq

Swapped Ecotec n/a:

RKsport Intake
RKsport upper motor mount
A-arm bushings
Tranny mounts (from before)
Stock manifold
Stock cat
Same cat back as before

Fidanza flywheel
Spec stage 3 clutch

total modification costs including motor swap: ~$2900-$3100

best e/t: 14.9
best trap speed: 92mph
best 60': 2.01 on same tires the OHV was on
best dyno: 142whp and 145wtq

hmm... sorry to my former slOver-head valve brothers, but I'm not sorry I became a "traitor" with significantly LESS done to the ecotec, the car is immensly faster. If I had the same amount of mods in the ecotec that I did in the OHV, I'm sure I would be down into the mid to low 14s easily. But I'm not here to bench race...

I was a bit wary at first of swapping the ecotec in, but I found the parts decently priced, and from the first time I punched the gas I've had no regrets and haven't looked back.

If I spent all the money I blew on bull@!#$ mods for the OHV into swapping in the ecotec, I could have had it turbo charged by now making 250whp with a stock bottom end. But live and learn... it'll take a bit longer and cost a bit more since I F'd around with the OHV for a while but the skwirl will be boosted shortly.. I only need some piping and the final component: the turbo.

Props to the OHV guys for going against the grain and building up the bastard motor, but the sorry fact is most of you need 5psi of boost to be where I am all motor and lightly modified.

No offense Notec started it!!!

I gotta tell you, I've never had a flinch from an LN2 (that wasn't 110% my fault lol). Never heard of these 'constant' problems you refer too (except the performance aspect of course), but maybe they only occur in certain areas (like your imagination HA!).

Gotta tell you man, half of those wouldn't do half a lick for performance, whether it be on the LN2 or the all-mighty ECO, and some were actually hurting performance (aka high-pressure springs on stock cam). With that much money you could have had much more power through budgeting.

and if you would have taken the money from the Eco swap and bought Adler's turbo setup, you could have even more...

And with just 5 psi more we'll put down more than you ever could NA...gotta face it, NA mods aren't worth the money, so all these comparisons were pretty much worthless
It's all good, the OHV isn't for everyone. Personally, I love being able to do head swaps in 10 minutes
