Drop me some names

I'm looking to redo my audio system in the the new year, now I like Alpine but I'm wondering what other brands I should look into. Im going to go for new 5 1/4 components in the front, amped maybe 150W a peice. Then for the bass I was thinking something thats around 1000W RMS. Any suggestions, thanks in advance

Parts Express is having a blowout on some 5 1/4" and 6 1/2" Peerless HDS drivers I wouldn't mind trying out. I'd go for those coupled with some LPG 26NA or Seas Neos tweets. Other brands I'd look at although some can get a little pricey are Morel, Fostex, Dynaudio, Scan-Speak, Vifa, Tang Band, and Dayton. You'd have to make your own crossover or go active / four channel. Personally I'd go Image Dynamics for the sub, but you'll find a lot of different opinions on subs.

That's some good SQ gear right there most definitely.

sq or spl, what are your goals?

i would look into some "underground" companies, non mainstream. like fi audio, ssa, sundown, ascendant audio, and many more, check out ssa forums, bassically any one in there manufacturer forums is going to do very well for output.

and most of them handle 1000wrms easily

But they also cost a lot and arent for those on a budget. My Sundown set me back $355. Ya its a damn good amp but its not the best for the money.

check out Fi audio....Fi Q, more for sq, and Fi BL more for spl...RE audio the SX model...and here's some questions for you. what amp are you running? what size sub? ported or sealed? like above SQ, SPL, or SQL? are you making your own box, or pre fab? as for speakers jbl p560c are pretty nice....

If I had to go buy again, I'd take any of the brands ohvrolla posted.

The old flagship alpines were scan-speak woofers and vifa tweeters.

I'm thinking about $1000CDN. Right now I'm running two MTX Thunder 10's in a sealed box, 760W Pioneer Amp. I'm not sure what SQ, SPL, and SQL mean, but definitely a prefab box. I was looking at some Rockford Fosgate gear for up front, and then maybe an Alpine Type X 12" sub with their 1000watt mono amp, or Alpine all around. I was just going to upgrade to components in the front, and amp them. However then I started thinking that they may overpower my subs.

sq means sound quailty, spl....sound pressure level....and sql is abit of both. in your car a good set of components amped will do you some good. unless all you want is bass...and the type x is more on the sq side of subs...if you like alpine try the 2x 12" type R with a mrp-m1000 and a ported box....amp should run you about 350 and about 300-350 for the subs

Im a huge supporter of FI. I;ve been funning a BL 18 for I think 3 years now. And a 12Q for a year. There are def some other good brands out there dont get me wrong...

The Customer Support, the quality, everything about them keeps me around.

I like Alpine as well, i still have a couple Type R's that hit pretty good. Im surprised they still run for there age the abuse they have seen.

FI BL 12in is gunna run you 274.

The Type X around the same price, no @!#$ comparison to the BL...

Speakers, Iv'e tried alot of em, on a budget, I say check out the Infinity's.

Amps

You can check out Sundown if you want. I've used them as well as a couple other brands. For the price, if you compare them to main stream amps, and then compare performance you'll see why they are gaining in popularity. If you search SSA you can find a good used one or a deal going on. I also like Rockford (this is new for me i never would endorse them in the past)

I'd keep the Pioneer amp for the comps if staying passive. I have one in the beater and it wasn't enough for my old MTX 7500 10" sub. That sumbish could take a pounding. If you're gonna keep a prefab box you might as well go two 10" subs in your current sealed box because I'll be d@mned if I'd go with a prefab ported. Then craigslist the Thunders or throw them in a beater if you have one.

Now if it was me, I'd get two Peerless HDS 6 1/2" woofer from PE for $70 and two LPG 26NA tweeters (I have these and are very smooth for aluminum dome) from Madison sound for $70. You can get mounting pods for the LPGs also that will let you angle them. Then make your own crossovers keeping in mind both drivers are 8 ohms. If you can fiberglass then pods would be nice to get the 6 1/2" more on axis as they'll have to be playing up to 4khz since the LPGs really shouldn't be crossed lower than 4Khz on a 12db slope. The Peerless HDS 5 1/4" would run about $50 for both and might be a better choice off axis as smaller drivers have better dispersion NORMALLY.

Totally unrelated, I really need to hear these Fi subs. They're either world beaters or the latest internet boner sub.

It's the latter of the two. They do well, don't get me wrong, but everyone's rocking the same baskets and motors, winding their own coils, and shipping it out.

I can attest to seeing the same baskets.

Alright, so here we go.

2 sets of Lanzar Opti 6.1 components, roughly 175 for the pair
Q-logic kick panels - 150
Lanzar OptiS350 - 200 rms x 2 @ 2 ohm - 135 dollars
Opti1233D - 259
Lanzar Opti1400D - 279
Box materials - 50
Wire - 100 dollars

Give or take, you're looking at 1150. With this setup, you wouldn't need an alternator quite yet, just a good healthy front battery and the big 3. The Opti components are supurb, and will give you a great front stage. I went on the high end for wiring, saying if you had absolutely nothing. Kickpanels you can get on ebay for a better price at times, so that would bring you down to around 1000 dollars. Your sub will handle 3000 watts rms, and it's dual 1 coils. At a later date, you could get another 1400d and run each amp on a coil.

I really dont consider 450 for a 15 a good deal. I love my amp. Dont get me wrong. Ive never had an issue with it and I dont see myself ever having one.

Sundown also has a very nice warranty plan which is one of the reasons why I got it. I think its 2 year limited. And a discounted replacement after that with the original invoice.

I just dont want to come off like a Sundown Audio nutswinger. I dont swear by any brand.

I would consider $450 the minimum for a worthwhile 15.
Yes I just said that.

I'm just going for sound quality. Also I'd really like to stay away from kick pods and the like, and just stick with where the current speaker placement is ... yes I know it sucks. But I'm not that talented haha.

Re: Drop me some names

ohvrolla.... You realize you have recommended some high end stuff, and recommended going with some piece together stuff that would be either making custom crossovers, taking chances on buying crossovers that might not be ideal, or going active.... to a guy who seems to just be getting into the hobby and probably doesn't have the resources or skill set to do anything at all like you are saying? Seriously, you sling knowledge around to look like some car audio genius, but you really can't recommend doing that kind of stuff to everyone.... Not everyone has the ability. You getting pretty technical with a guy who sounds like some quality pre-matched passives, a 2 channel amp, a decent mid range sub in a ported box, and a 1000 watt mono would easily make happy....

On the other hand....you have other fingers.
