Megasquirt FTW!!
Im having a blast tuning this thing with it.
Couldnt have asked for an easier install.
Tuning capabilities are practically endless.
Now Im ready for some ported manifolds, a nice cam, and maybe boost. But itll be a secret.
And the best part is I can use a 3bar map sensor with megasquirt. Try that with HPT

Don't worry about it man. I had a few moments of the same feeling.
When I first fired it up, I was really wondering how many things I F'd up, but it started the first try.
I couldn't believe I didn't have to troubleshoot just to get it going!

As long as you're taking your time and thinking about the wires your splicing, and double checking yourself, you'll do fine.

fax a copy of the gm schematic (donor) of the wiring harness to me and I will look at it and give u my input
what year engine pcm, what year car?? to 641-872-1939

Do you want the PCM pinout for both cars?

Just ask away, If we dont know we'll find out for you.
Be sure to be specific on the pin outs and wire colors.

That is awsome.. I went to UTI they would NEVER THINK of letting anyone do that to a car lol
Congrats and it seems like fun!!

Would be a waste, the internal MAP sensor on the MS is 2.5 BAR. If you really wanna get insane you can get the MAPDaddy 4 Bar and be able to register up to 44psi of boost.

But yeah, any help you need with wiring, just ask. Usually though, if you just kinda sit back, relax and take a few breaths and look over the wiring diagrams again, maybe a few times... it'll come to you.

Hey thanks for all your guys' help. I dont think I would be able to do this with out yalls input. So thanks again.

Here are the upadated pics of the motor back together. It was supposed to be in the car tonight at school but when I was torquing down the header studs/nuts ont broke off in the head. AHHHHHH 2 hour ordeal to get it out and re-tapped lol. So it didnt go in today . I also got my power steering line back today from the hydraulic shop. $20 bucks.

That sucks about having to retap that head for the bolt. But things happen.

Nice to see a lil paint action on there. Always liked seeing the ones with the polished up numbers on the UIM.

Lookin good. Are you running the ps pump with the variable power assist. Im curious to see if a non power assist pump has the same great steering ability over the stock J pump.

Your evap line will just plug n play like your fuel lines at the frame rail. I think I used the evap line from the grand am though.

Same thing happened on mine with the exhaust manifold bolt. It was a pain in the ass to change out.

Joe - I have the variable assist pump. But the plug is not hooked up to it, so no variable assist. I know the plug is for kicking the idle up when you turn the wheel sitting somewhere so the engine doesn't stall. I'm just assuming it has part to do with the variable assist too. All i know is with it not hooked up, it turns amazingly quick and easy.

Yeah, im running it too. not hooked up. Very nice steering. I was just curious on how well the non assist pumps work.
Some how that is wired into the anti lock brake computer of the grand ams.

Hmm...... that sounds odd. Maybe it's to adjust the braking force at the front wheels when the steering is turned. For stabliity reasons.

Yeah I really dont know what it really does, the diagram is interesting.
If any one wants to attempt to get it to work this is for you.

Looks like you need to swap steering columns to do it as well as the EBCM. I'm curious what the difference is. Maybe I'll try to see if I can find a GA with and without it to drive.

Re: Official Progress Thread 3400 Swap

Yeah thats why I didnt hook it up. the columns are totally different, No place for the key on the gam fo rone thing. But yes you would need the column because the sensor is on the base of it, I dont know if it could be removed and converted to a J comumn or not. I didnt go that far into it. I do know that the 01 gam and 01 cav abs mod are visually the same, same plug too. It appeared that the internals were different. I dont know if the older swaps can use the newer module or not, I guess it would depend on what is transmitted through the serial data during the steerings operation.

I was going to run the non power assist pump until i found out that it took a different pressure hose.

Nate which one are you running? make sure that the pressure line is the correct one. I know you said you had one made but didnt say which pump you have.

Man is this thing done yet???? Ive got over 4000 miles on mine and it's still running great. Had a guy at the gas station asked me if i wanted him to check my oil, i was like sure. Pops the hood and all i hear is "wtf?". The extra weight makes the car plow through the snow better too. I was pretty surprised when i came out one morning and the car fired up after 3 turn when it was -35* out.

I found out that doing the wiring with the harness still pluged onto the motor made thing easier. Keep at it, next thing you know it'll be time to fire it up.

I honestly dont know which PS pump I have. I know that it has a plug on it for something tho. Dxray I was thinking about doing that with the harness plugging it back up because theres so many wires to deal with now since its not hooked up. Like im trying to focus on just a few wires but keep looking at the whole thing lol. Perhaps I will hook it up this week when its in the car. Oh and I had no idea how freaking much spark plugs were for that motor. My teacher told me to runACDelco plugs in it and they were $7 each lol. I asked the guy at Advanced auto to look up the 3400 for a price and I told him ill take 4 plugs. He was like dont you need 6? HAHA Im so used to getting parts for the 2.2 still lol.

I had a 92 SHO that had a variable assist. I wonder if the GA has servo motors on the column like the SHO does? They make it harder to turn when you're at speed, since you don't need power really when you're at speed. As a matter of fact, my GTP seems to move as quick when at speed with steering input like my Cav does. Maybe if I ever get any warmth around here I can get in there and have a look see.

Nate - I'm pretty sure if you have the plug in there that you have the variable assist pump. If it was the non, I don't think it would have the plug. But I could be wrong. All I know is I got the non-variable steering line and it doesn't fit the same way (or I have it on wrong, heh) as the correct one does.

Re: Official Progress Thread 3400 Swap

the non var assist pumps actually take a longer pressure line since the plug section is not on the pump. You cant remove the var assist part of the pump either, I tried it, the pump body is different.
If you got a plug , the car had it.
Sounds like it could be the same as the sho. There are countless other gm cars and trucks that use the same setup on the column, the cadillacs, and yukon denali's are 2 that I know of for sure.

Yep expensive plugs. Just please dont run bosch platnum crap, stick with ac delco's for the v6 . I run NGK's in my truck but that is what was recommended by the cylinder head mfg.
Also dont run autozone or advance auto cheap plug wires. nothing but crap there too. Either get yourself a new ac delco or msd set.
Do not use the Accel yellow wires, you know the 20 dollar ones.
You have to realize you get what you pay for, and its not worth the headache to save money in the Sparkey Sparkey area,

Ok... with the iridium plugs I think I know what you are planning, watch the juice. a 3400 likes a 50 shot and has to be wet.

Nice. Makes me wish I did a stick.
Mine went right up in from the bottom, that is with out the rad and condenser in there. I didnt even pull the subframe. And the auto is bigger. Didnt you pull the radiator, or did you put it in from the top?

See what I meant about the lower hose being a tight fit? If you need to turn or shorten the hose at the T, just get a wafer wheel and cut the plastic clamps off, then replace them with reg hose clamps when you get it just right. I actually used the T from the cav and the lower hose from the grand am. mostly because i screwed up the cav hose and cut it too short.
