I have a 99 cavi, and have had a cracked windshield for a few months now and its always bothered me, I went to a junkyard and all the cavalier windshields are broken, but they had a few sunfires with good windshields i was wondering if it would fit? Im guessing it should.

well i had a crack in mine and had a buddy who has been doing windshields for 25 yrs do it. i asked him if i should buy one from a yard and he said bad idea due to the weather stripping and glass being molded together. he said it would leak unless i RTVed the shi* out of it.

I have been told this by a couple of glass places as well. The J-body glass comes from the factory with the weather stripping molded to it, and weather stipping only made to be put in once. It usually will never seal again properly after being removed.

Check with your insurance company, replacement windshields may be included without paying your deductible.

I have never heard of that , 17 years in the buisness. I had a used windshield put in my wifes 98 cav, been in there for 7 years and not a single leak. Sounds like the window guy just wants to sell you a new one. Or he needs to find a different line of work if his installs leak.

Oh I for got to tell you, Your insurance will cover it if you have full coverage or comprehensive. You may have a deductable though, if you have a $250 deductable its not worth turning it in. Odds are the new one wont even be $200 installed.

The molding he was most likely talking about was the reveal meolding. When you put the windshield in, that molding that goes around it usually gets stuck to the glue. When you try to take it out it tears. So you would need to buy a new molding when putting the new one in.
I would personally go with a new one. No pits or scratches. Depending on the price of one in the junk yard and if you are hard up on cash. Usually it would be more cost effective to just get a new one installed. That way you know it has no scratches or pits and if it leaks you call up the people that put it in and they come right out and fix it for you.

you can't put a new molding on the 95 and up windsheilds it's modular which means the windshield comes with the molding on it and canot be replaced once damanged any good glass guy should be able to take them out and not damage them though.
