its cut that way so you can put the bolts in there securely, if you put a hole straight through it would crush / partially flatten when you tried to torque it down if you already have a flat surface that won't happen and you don't have to worry about it coming loose.
heres mine before i put it on the car., its a aircraft grade aluminum ( T6061) and pretty heavy duty.

paul being stupid isnt covered under warrenty....... my brace is fine now but i wasnt paying attention when i bent it but it still holds up and does its pourpose
Damn Paul you are lucky that was there, if that got the transpan with that much force chances are you'd be carless waiting for a trans to get put it, be glad you took out an inexpensive bar and not the trans

So yea, I drove by the same spot as usual today (but rememberd to go into the left lane) and I musta f'd the pavement too or something. All new asphalt right there - there's still a lil bump but it prolly woudln't do much if I passed over it. Too bad I didn't get a chance to take a pic of that spot before they re-paved it... Still haven't had a chance to take the brace off tho - too cold to work under the car by the time I get home.
Ryan, I still have like 2-3 weeks left on the warranty so at least it <might> not be an out-of-pocket expense
