ok i understand all that. so what about the inside and outside diameters? i want it to be at least as strong as phil's but i know i can go smaller than 1-1/4in. so what would i guys suggest?
hey phil, what are ur measurements of the bar, and the thickness?

Honestly 1" OD with 1/16-1/8" wall will be just fine, it's all compressive forces and that is what cylinders do best.
The problem comes when you realize the threads at each end need something decent to hold on to, and 1/8" wall isn't enough. So you'll probably need to weld a plug in each end and drill and tap it to size.

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
My bar is 1-1/4" OD with a 3/8" wall making it have an ID of 1/2".
I cannot remember the length of it off hand. Something strikes up 42-1/2", but do not quote me on it!!!!!
here is what i ended up getting
its O.D. is 1-1/4in with 1/8in wall and chromoly 5/8in heim joints. bungs that the heim joints thread into and weld into the chromoly tubing

Ouch, you can buy pre-threaded rods so you don't need to weld in those "bungs".
Why does the rod end look like it's ready to pop out? (metal looks bent near the threads...)
Well u can buy them but I didn't buy anything and a friend of mine can weld them. The parts came from rod end supply which is in my city

Damn straight.
RodEndSupply is where I've gotten alot of my parts for various braces on the 'blu.
Nice choice and they're reasonably priced too.

Thank you Dave and JBO!

The place I was at is airparts. There website airpartsinc.com
My boss which I install carpet with, his wife and her mom owns that company

Rodendsupply is where I got my bar parts too (the company of which I heard of from Misnblu).
I'd recommend them too... parts came quick and relatively cheap, they even suggested to me some more beefier parts for near the same price as the lesser I was about to order.
this ks gonna be a pretty slick operation. I measured 46in center to center.

i finally got this thing installed, so here is a few pictures of the install. there is alot more in the album

Thats the way it should be done .....
Did you use 5/8" heims?
just so you guys know, on the dual exhaust sunfires the exhaust will hit. i had to cut off the little one that splits off to the passenger side but it still hit last nite when i had the car completely full of newspapers. i take the backseats out, so the trunk and backseats were full. if you look in the album there is pics of where i cut it off and welded a block off plate. its not completely blocked off, there is some holes around the edges. we just tack around for temporay

I have everything planned out and I want to build my own too. Question though, Wouldnt steel be a bit heavy? I really want aluminum but cant weld it. I could have a friend weld it but who knows when he has the time to do it. Also am I ok with taking 1-1/4" aluminum rod and drilling and taping out each end then buying the RH and LH heims and screwing them in? Or does it need to be radius rod? Thanks

well steel is twice as heavy as aluminum and 3 times stronger. my bar is 1 1/4in and 1/8in wall. phil's is 1 1/4in but with 3/8in wall. mine is chromoly which is alot stronger than regular than steel, and its barely heavier than his but probably 4-5 times stronger or more. I'll take strength any day over weight

OK now Im planning in using 1" chrome moly tube with 1/8" wall. Then using 1/2" heim joints on each end. Should be well strong enough. Your bar looks very clean!
(BlackFire)
That was my plan but they didn't have any bungs to fit the 1in so I went one step up. I think that's the perfect size for the application
'03 Sunfire 190k
I found a set of bungs, heims and jam nuts all for 21.00 on ebay. The 1" tube has to have .065 wall though. Man am I jacking this thread!
(BlackFire)
You don't have to use Chromoly for this application.
Here is the write up I did giving you all the information on the bar and it's length.
Buy the bar already threaded on RodEndSupply.com.
Get the Swaged bar for strength and save weight with aluminum.
Increased weight increases your unsprung weight.
Good luck with it.

Thank you Dave and JBO!

Id buy the bar from rodend but I dont see anyprices.Am I missing something?

You need to email them with what you want, they'll get a price back to you. I believe they have an PDF catalog on the website. When I ordered mine it came out to $44.52, shipped.
I know some people want a thicker stronger bar, this is just what *I* ordered to get some ballpark price ideas.
XML6-7 3/8 X 7/16 M LH 4130 NFM $11.63
XMR6-7 3/8 X 7/16 M RH 4130 NFM $11.63
SJNR07 7/16 RH Steel Jamnut $0.46
SJNL07 7/16LRH Steel Jamnut $0.46
6837-44 7/8X7/16X44 Alum Rad Rod $11.92
Parts came to ---------------------------> $36.10
Ofcourse if you go a bigger bar, everything grows in price a bit. Also, this doesn't include hardware to attach the bar TO the car. That'd be another $5 or so at your local hardware store.
They do have a printout with prices they send you once you order something too, fyi. I think the prices just change too often for them to bother keeping them up-to-date on the website.
