Hello,
I'm new to the forum. I have a friend who is building a motor for cirlce track racing his cavalier. He has asked me to do a cylinder head for him. I'm a head porter and have done many 4 valve heads, but never touched a chevy 2.2L head.
How are the valve springs on these cars? The engine will be operating in the 6000-7000 rpm range. Are there a set of aftermarket springs you would recommend?
Any specific areas on these heads that respond well to porting?
Any other info on building one of these heads would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tyler
there are upgraded springs that you should add for that rpm range. May consider rocker arms while you are in there. I can send you photos of my ported head if you would like. Check out Ryan Eggleston's car. He isn't a circle track guy, but I believe that he has almost every possible upgrade. MadJack knows everything about these engines too. His posts are invaluable.
Sig'less since '02!

i seem to remember that with cutting a new spring seat, you can use SBC springs. new studs and you can use SBC rockers.

If you could email me some pictures, I would greatly appreciate it.
I as under the assumption that this was a 4 valve / cylinder head. I picked it up today to find it was a 2 valve. He said it is from a ~'92.
Does anyone make a standard-size valve for this engine?
Are you familiar with big-block Chevy heads? That's what they're designed after. The only advice I can give you applies to the '92-'97 head, which is to shape (Don't remove!) the nub on the floor of the exhaust-port so it allows easy flow in one direction... provides resistance (blocks reversion) in the other. The latter is what it's there for... The factory was just too-cheap to really take the time to shape it like I said. Otherwise, all lessons learned about BBC heads apply.
Also: Search the spring thread here. MadJack authored it, and updates it every time he finds something new. He considered the "The Master" (Well, one of them at least) of the LN2 on this site.
Go beyond the "bolt-on".
