cooling system?
Thursday, March 10, 2011 7:05 AM
i have been wondering a few things and now im really curious because i just saw a picture of Teddy's setup. i have been wanting to run a different radiator in my car to provide more air to the intercooler and engine. (intercooler is behind the radiator). i put the intercooler behind the radiator to hide it because everything in my car is hidden. but back to topic i was wondering if i would be able to get a radiator with a cap on it or would i have problems because it is lower than my coolant lines.

sorry, i forgot to include how i planned on filling the system up, i planned on filling it up by bsasically a long filler tube and putting the cap on once i remove the tube

if the cap is lower than the radiator hoses i don't see how you could possibly ever get it full of coolant honestly.

yea i was thinking the same, im not sure if having a longer filler tube would do it or not, it was kind of just a crazy idea i was throwing around

i just put a s10 radiator on my turbo sunfire and got rid of the dumb overflow tank and now have a closed circuit cooling system with a cap on the radiator

Just have to make sure the cap is the same height as the engine or I could be wrong but if cap sits lower you fill it still using the overflow and make sure not to open the cap of the radiator since water would rush out.

I'm going to be doing the same thing to my car. I sent him a PM for a couple questions with what he did but my plan as of now is to install the in line radiator cap with an overflow.

Completely eliminate the current expansion tank including the hose that goes from the valve cover to the tank. I plan on capping that with a bolt and will top off the coolant from that location since it will then be the highest point. I'd like some feedback on this as well if anyone sees a problem with this idea.

Don't mean to drop this in this thread but it seems like it would answer your question as well. Thanks.

BUMP!

i would really like to know about the nipple at the tp and if you can cap that because i thought that was an overflow also if it starts to heat up. i didnt think about that nipple before but i could bleed and fill the system from there right? it would just take some patience pouring

My thoughts are to cap that, shouldn't be a problem to tap that it's aluminum. I don't think you would really need that anymore as you would now be relieving any pressure out of the cap and into an overflow. As for filing it, it shouldn't be too bad. Fill at the cap and then there is only a small percentage above that, but yea a little patients. Then put a bolt (cap) back in (at the "nipple") and be done.

That is what I'm thinking anyway and would like some feedback as well. I don't see anything that would be wrong with this since the majority of vehicles operate with this type of system anyway.

very true. i think i have a weekend project now! im thinking about putting in a smaller style radiator like on hondas and run a 24/7 fan. with dual fans on my intercooler i think the air going past all 3 will be enough to keep it cool

did the trans cooler lines bolt right up?? also this would have to be from a 2 wheel drive or 4?? 2.2 right?

thanks

the one i used was from a 2.2 no trans cooler and with this setup you have to run an overflow bottle and also the fill cap for the radiator sits right next to my drivers headlight ill take pics and post them today
