has anyone ever heard of a ram-air kit for the 3rd gen cavaliers? i saw an 05 cav that had one done. looked like a scoop down near the grille and ran a tube into a short ram cold air kit. ive never seen this b4 and i was wondering if any of u guys have heard of it done and weather its worth-while
either way......would it still bring colder air to the filter?
Yes. The idea behind Ram-Air or a FAI (Fresh-Air Intake) is to make an effort to insure the engine's air-filter (Especially when it's a contained area in some way) receives all the cool, outside air it would ever need to flow.
You see, when increased flow-rate filters are added the the inlet-tract system it becomes easier for any air that's drawn into the engine to pass through the filter area. As the area of the filter is enlarged over stock (To a certain degree) it acts like as if there is no restriction imposed by the filter. Then when acoustic baffling that's placed in the factory inlet tract is removed (Or by-passed) , the air finds a more direct route to the throttle-body from the filter. And then it's like as if the inlet-tract & filter isn't there at all!
But still, the engine needs the proper amount of air to reach the filter area to breathe properly under all conditions for best performance. And the best performance of all is had with cool, outside air (As you already know). A good FAI will ensure that. The beauty of this system is the effect it can have on mileage under cruise conditions (Or acceleration, within reason) as result of reactions had by the engine's computer management to the engine's tune when it's IAT (Inlet Air Temperature) sensor sees this cooler air that built-up (Collected) in the filter-containment area flowing down the tract. Re: It's easy to breathe-easy when you have all the air you'd ever need supplied to you.

Ive got a K&N Typhoon intake with a Weapon R cold air box. seems to be a great combo. Noticeable difference from just the WAI, especially if ive been sitting at a light on a hot day, it doesnt seem to bog down like it did before.
The box isnt a perfect fit, so if you get one be prepared to do a little cutting on it. I also used some heavy vinyl (the kind you get at home depot to go on top of a tool box) to seal some of the more open areas around the sides of the box, and I ran a tube from the box to the factory intake opening behind the battery & headlight. End result...all the performance of a CAI with no worries during the heavy summer rains.
If I didnt like my fog lights so much Id pull em out and run a tube from the box to the fog light hole and have ram air.

I used to have a scoop under my bumper in my 96 cavi. It was the 4 door with the 2.4 and auto tranny. With the scoop on I would consistantly run a tenth of a second faster in the 1/4 than when I didn't have it on.
I would break it off all the time so I would go to the track quite often and not have it. Then I would replace it and go again. That is how I mean consistantly. I used a dryer exhaust port from home depot spray-painted with Krylon Fusion Flat Black. It worked great IMHO however it was very close to the ground and would catch too often.

I've heard worse... A buddy of mine fabbed a scoop to help the factory intercooler on his '87 GN out of a vinyl office wastebasket get more air, and it made a heluva difference in the 1/4mi. Only problem was despite the ground clearance being okay (About the same as the under-chassis) the damn thing picked-up a rabbit that tried to cross the road in-front of him one day. It lived, got two broken back legs, but he decided that's enough of it. Besides, he couldn't get a race up with it because everyone who saw it thought he had something really special in terms of mods done to need that kind of support, and were afraid they'll lose... badly!

My cousin has two tubes of dryer venting running from where the fog lights should be on his Mustang into the intake because his 351 has a problem with overheating. You can't really tell its there unless you're looking for it.
I tried something like this my second time to the track. Everybody laughed hard than the first time("A Sunfire? Whats that chick car doing here?), but it worked! I don't remember the times, but it did make a noticable differance.

Gonna guess you have a warm air intake under the hood and the filter right behind that hole in the hood, i thought of this idea but never tried it...any difference? also how does the filter like the pouring rain with that hole
to be honest I honestly think there may be some small gains,, once I cleaned up the cuts and painted the hood it turned out nice, I get people wanting me to do it to their cars.. if anything you can hear the intake alot more, I'm a big fan of making noise.. and for the rain my dad & I installed a tiny block off door that folds up from the underside of the hood via a electic actuator from a motorcycle flip up license plate, works pretty slick, but not so pretty under the hood, but it's far from a show car!.... I gotta get some recent pics up soon.
