engine is an air pump, more air you can get in and out, the more power you will make, granted you also have the right amount of fuel..

I vote get it tuned.

yeah im sorry new here........ i have a 1996 cavalier, with the 2.2 ohv, 5 speed, i have a cold air intake, obx header, obx 2.5 in exaust. i was just wondering what i could do to make a little more power...but i DONT want to go turbo! i ve heard of throttle body upgrades, TB spacers, intake mani upgrades.........

tb spacers are useless unless your'e looking into n2o.

the best thing you could do to make more power is look into an ld9 or 3x00 swap.

WAAAAAAAAAAAY more trouble than it's worth on your car. it basically involves stripping your car to just the unibody and swapping everything from the 03+ car. the 2.4 swap is really a better candidate.

whats your take on the 2.3 engine? better or worse then the 2.4???
Re: cavy 2.2 perfomance
Saturday, November 13, 2010 7:15 PM
well most the 2.4 guys on here run parts right from the 2.3 so you do the math.

if your'e going through the hassle to swap an entire engine y not swap to something with some balls stock? seriously do some research in the third gen forum, read the sticky's on the v6 swaps, then search some more in the third gen and performance forums and research about swapping to a 2.4 or 2.3 and then come back and ask questions.

also like i originally said, there's lots and lots of thread's on the ln2 in here, some will tell you it's the worst engine in the world but that doesn't mean it has no potential. do a little bit of reading please.

utfse.

my buddy has a sunfire with the 3.8 s/c swap. i really have no intrest in that engine swap, i dont want a 3100 swap or anything....... and as i said i have an 04 with the eco and a cobalt ss swap done, so i know what im doing as far as cavaliers go... ive just never owned a 2.2 ohv......and i really dont know how good the 2.3 is compared to the 2.4

Depends what flavor of 2.3 we're discussing. The one that came in Cavs. No. The 2.3 HO or the W41. Most will say theyre better than the ole 2.4. In your situation your either going to have to swap to OBD1 or full-tuneable OBD2 from a 97+ car. You kinda got the bastard child electronics. Cant tune it.

No, it can't... as the OBD1.5 is just a OBD-I with a OBD-II style ALDL. So, you can't "flash" it. You gotta get a chip "burned", and without an emulator (expensive & difficult to use) that means needing to send-it-off to someone who has one, and is hopefully proficient with it & familiar with your engine... Not to mention knowledgeable about how to tune for what mods exist in your application.

And to the OP: Higher ratio rocker-arms... Look into it!

Go beyond the "bolt-on".

jeez.... i didnt know these 2.2 ohv's were so freakin complicated..... so if i did a engie swap from a 97 or newer i would be able to tune it?

wouldn't need to swap the engine, just the ecu.

The '95 doesn't have provisions for the cam position sensor used to control the SFI. Without it it would only work in open-loop batch-fire mode.

If you do a '97 swap for tuning, go ahead and do a rebuild with a zero decked block to increase the compression ratio(requires adjustable aftermarket rocker arms, and shorter pushrods), get the cam reground for more performance and rebuild the head (mill the deck, +1mm valves, port & polish, valve springs depending on cam). A moderate build on the motor with a tune will most likely get you to the level you want. Having the spare motor out of the vehicle will allow you to build it to your specs and not have any major down time, then take a weekend and do the swap.

Long story short...

1. 2.4 is a detuned 2.3 motor. If you can, get the W41 (2.3) motor. But if a LD9 (2.4) is available, dont pass it up.

2. You have a 97 or newer, you can tune. 96 you cannot. Bummer. Life goes on.

3. No doubt you know how to eco this and that with your cobalt setup. But if you want to do that, 2000-2002 models. 1999 or older you need to STRIP the car. Complete harness swap, reweld tranny mounts, etc. If I went that route Id sell the 96 and pick up a 2000 for a few hundred bucks more then do the swap.

4. Engine swap a 96... the 2.3, the 2.4, or the 3400. Keep in mind if you do the 3400, you can keep your tranny. Eco/2.3/2.4, you need to use the trans that came with those engines.

Lastly, its not that the 2.2ohv is so complicated, its the year car you have. More 3rd gen reading for you.
