Built a 2200 for my winter beater, it's hideous.

I recently purchased a black 98 Sunfire 5 speed from another member on this site. It wasn't running and everything pointed to it needing to have the head gasket changed out. Anyhow, I pulled the engine ordered up a bunch of replacement parts, and tore into it over the weekend. I ended up replacing the timing chain, sprockets, front crank seal, timing cover gasket, head gasket, and intake manifold gasket. It has new head bolts in there as well. The car isn't much to look at, so I figured I'd paint the engine a goofy color to make the "beater look" complete. LEAVE THE RTV valve cover gasket alone. The one I had was malformed and I just did this temporarily. A REAL valve cover gasket will be on there tomorrow, JESUS. Once I get the engine installed, I'll be parking my Grand Prix for the season for some MUCH needed repairs.

Here's my ugly 2200, yes I half ass shined up the aluminum too:

Yes, this was all done as a joke. Here are a few of my current DD:

The green is a joke? I remember how back in the lae-'80s, at the height of the Pro-Street movement, guys would have killed for an engine with a look like that (Florescent green, aluminum head, polished aluminum rocker cover)! If you real want to make it look like a beater, keep the RTV & make the engine compartment (With engine inside) look like a sludge-bomb went off inside of it. Fools are impressed by shiny, clean engines... Real automotive-performance guys know the more less likely (Beat) it looks (And I mean: Just looks), the more trouble it will be to those who run against it.

No, that's just you old guys didn't think it was worth cleaning the ole sbc up because it would just piss oil all over itself again. Now a days most people that build a nice engine, show or race, want it to look good because that's part of the deal now.

By that I mean that it's nothing more than a beater, and I thought I'd do something ridiculous to the engine while I had it out. The more I think about it, the more I like how it'll look in the end. The car is black on black and it's body is in pretty rough shape. It's just years of neglect from its original owner. (Not the guy I bought it from.) The paint is pretty much flat black from the sun, and the driver's side door has a little bit of a dent in it. Once I completely flat black the car, and clean the grease out of the engine bay, this little 2200 will stand out. Especially if I were to do something like put on a nickel plated header. Only thing I particularly hate about this engine appearance wise, is how the water pipe, radiator hoses, and heater core lines are set up. UGLY, UGLY, CREATURE.

Agreed

As for the green engine...Damn that sure was a funny joke NOT. To be honest it seems pretty stupid to me. So what if the rest of the car does not look so great. If it is not worth making look good than why even bother painting it. I know I could sure as hell think of more important things to do with my time.

Well, I had the engine out of the car and completely disassembled. I don't think the fifteen minutes it took for me to paint it really set me back all too much. It wasn't really supposed to be funny for you, I don't give a @!#$ whether you got a kick out of it or not. I had pressure washed the engine, and instead of throwing a rusty mess back into the car I decided to paint it. It's my beater and I'll do what I feel like, I never asked your approval anyhow.

I threw the front end onto the engine today, pullies, brackets, and all. I painted some of the hardware, the rest of it just got a good cleaning. I'll post pictures tomorrow morning when I get back to the shop, I didn't have my camera with me. The engine actually looks REALLY good fully dressed and painted as it is. I can imagine with a polished/plated header it will look even better. LOL, I forgot to order the valve cover gasket today. The one that was on there was flattened and distorted from heat, I put the RTV on there thinking that it MAY work. However, it just turned into an ugly mess. Rest assured that all that slop will be cleaned off tomorrow, and the cover properly installed with a new gasket. I can't have an engine as awesome looking as this, with @!#$ty RTV on the head/cover.

Wade: last time I checked, you still didn't really know anything about building a car, let alone what it takes to be a real contender on the street. And I didn't mean the engine's color was a joke, just that there was a time when such dressing would have really flown. I'm sure when the car is finished in flat black (Either suede or satin finish) it will look so right. Like an old buddy's late-'80s Fox-'Stang when he sparyed it in charcoal-gray & attached purple (Violet?) neon to the underside of the dual snorkle hood in the shape of a crucifix. Of course, he was pretty-deep into the black arts, so...

Just an FYI. When you really do have a fast car you don't want to race posers on the street. I know you would not know anything about that with your 2.turd s-dime.

Wade: At least I'm not some J-punk trying to be respectable in the ranks that really matter. You know... The traditionalists. The people that run engines that make the type of power you wish you could with your engine easily. I have hung with them since before you could hold a Hot Wheels car in your hand. Some one these guys run a Porsche dealership & make the kind of movies sold on TV that wankers like youself go ga-ga over. They know good when they see it, and it's not in the form of a front-driver.

As for my truck, Double-deuce & all, it holds more respect with said crowd just for the handling tuning I've done than some overpowered, FWD econobox gussed-up to sell to wannabe-racer juveniles.

And retro-themes like suede or satin combined with florescents look wickedly evil on modern aerodynamic body styles, as opposed to cheap flashy rims oversized to the point that all comfort & forgiveness to roadway flaws has been compromised, and ridiculously shaped wings that'll do nothing to help the handling with the type of powertrain the car they're placed on has (Re: FWD) if not make it worse.

XDGT: Nice, man! It really comes together with the water fittings & accessories done-up in gloss-black. Now just polish-up the tensioner, timing-cover & the exhaust side of the head (Not to mention do the filter over in black & clean the overspary off the sensors) and you'll have it!

Thanks for the kind words Dimer and others. Yeah, I'll be pulling the tensioner and water pipe back off, I just need some more polishing pads for my air tools. That filter I just used to cover the mating surface of the block while I painted it, it'll be replaced once I run a break in cycle of oil through it. I'll post more pictures once I've finished that stuff up and put the coil pack bracket, packs, and EGR blockoff on. Once that's done, I'm hoping to put it back into the car this Sunday. It really depends though, I'd like to degrease the engine bay and that may take all day alone. Then again the trans is awfully dirty too.. Pulling the 5 speed for a quick bath and shine wouldn't be too bad, but it'd set me back a week of getting the car on the road. (Mornings are starting to suck without functional heat in my Grand Prix )
