Spun Main 1 tonight, Time to repair, what to upgrade?
Thursday, July 10, 2008 8:08 PM
So far Im planning on a new crank, bearings(obviously), and a New Oil Pump(im thinking the culprit)

Car still runs, Knocking bad on the Pully side, pretty sure its the #1 Main.

Right before it happened I would get a Flickering Oil light when making a hard turn, but oil levels never show low.

Not sure why it happens when i turn then?

Anyway, This is my first 2.4 Bottom end, Just wondering if there's anything i Should do (140k miles) Only future plans are the GM SC and never over 10lbs.
I would Like to Avoid Pulling the Top end apart for this repair if at all possible.

List:
1. New Crank/Bearings
2. New Oil pump and Pickup
3. Swap over to Full synthetic

Thanks!

If your going to rebuild anyway I would go:

Consider the melling pump (Im not a 2.4 guy but thats what I think its called)

I would go eagle rods and wiesco pistons. twenty over, DONT go low comp, do stock comp.

New mains and gaskets and your done.

If your not considering aftermarket rods and pistons just go to a wrecker and pick up a low milage 2.4 for $500 bucks................ its not worth opening the motor if your going stock rebuild.

the "pick up" IS the balance shaft housing....

what do you want with the motor, then decide what to do....

Right now I want a Repair, with any affordable upgrades in the process.

The GM SC is well far off and wont be doing more than an intake in the next year im sure, so Building it isint that big of a deal.

rebuild it, get pistons ONLY if you WANT them, use a Melling pump, and a quality bearing set. don't wast money with head studs, cometic H\G, and stuff like that, unless 450+ is what you want.

rebuild it, use the better pump, a good ring set, Quality bearing set and LO cams.

5W30 Mobil oil for 500 Miles, change, 5W30 for 1500 Miles (after rebuild) change, then a 10-40 Mobil-1, Or 15-50 Mobil-1, last ya a easy 150K+.

now some people will Disagree, but as Tom always says, I usually end up sating "i told ya so" afterwards.

for budget bottom end.

.040 over
and 2.3 oil pump swap

I don't know how much a of a mechanic you are or what tools and machines you have. but those two mods could be done for not much $

Id Prefer Not To Pull the pistons, that will require a new HG and all other upper gaskets

The only engine Ive built on my own was my Miata 1.8, then I did the top end on my Sunfires 2200.

I havent got time/money/knoledge for machine work either.

I really just want to get this fixed for now. If I do a built engine Ill prob build it and swap.

Where do i get the Melling pump?

And sorry for not knowing but what are LO cams?

chris, they arent called the 'LO cams', only ONE of them is out of a LO 2.3. the other is simply out of a 95 2.3. your getting people confused when you CONSTANTLY say that. its the SECRET cams.

chazz-no need to worry about 10 psi with the ld9 m45, the most ive ever heard of was 7.5psi.

If you really want to debate that i can past the info from my parts catolog, or GM SI......

^I hit 15 and climbing a month ago... when my cat clogged.

There's a few in the 11-13 range. It's just that most people port everything and have a full exhaust so the restriction (PSI) drops, but power increases. Lower boost doesn't always mean lower power..

.... if you want to get tecnical....
Are the LD2 cams from 89 the same as 90?......
is the oil pump the same from 89 the same as 90... the timing chain.... cover, pump pulley.....
LOL ANY of the heads...

the point is, no matter what LD2 cams you use. its a better then the LD9 cams..

so the point sticks.

get a set of LD2 cams.

ld2 cams = .375 lift
lgo cams = .410 lift

they share the same duration. the 95 2.3 is such an oddball.

chazz, get your crank polished and knife edged.

Re: Spun Main 1 tonight, Time to repair, what to upgrade?

no, the point does not stick. the point is your telling people that the SECRET cams are the LO cams, when its not the case.

the SECRET cams are the:

90-94 LO exhaust
95 intake

the fact they are both ld2's is irrelevant, they do not have the same cams, intake's anyways.

you telling people the LO cams will work is confusing people, especially newbies that dont know the 95+ quad family of engines all have the power steering run off the intake cam. NO the CPS doesnt matter for someone who has HPT and can ditch it, but for the average newbie tuner (they make up a lot of our population on here) they dont have HPT and dont have that ability. and quite frankly, i would want the car running in the right mode anyways, regardless if it CAN run a different way.

then keep your cams.

he was asking what people think they should do. I chose to use the RPO code for the 95 VIN D.... and it is LD2. saying use the "Secret" cams is OH IDN gay.

ANY one with half a brain, can buy (i have 5 in a bag at work), or cut the hex drive out, and make your own 95+ PS LD2 cam work.

its a 47/64 drill bit BTW...

ya, get a set of LD2 cams.
