Will this catalytic converter work or not?
Friday, March 07, 2008 8:41 AM
I ordered this Magnaflow catalytic converter (91035) from Gravana assuming it was the right one. After stopping by the exhaust shop today to get an estimate, I was told that this catalytic converter would more than likely not work and would probably cause the CEL to come on. So, I came home and did some research on here. I found that pretty much everyone on here is using the 94035 Magnaflow catalytic converter. My question is, the only difference between the two seems to be length. The 91035 (the one I currently have in my possesion) has a total length of 13" and the 94035 (the one everyone on here has) has a total length of 16". Before I go through the hassle of returning the one I already have, I am just wondering if the 91035 will work or should I just return it and get the 94035? Thanks in advance.

my guess is the exhaust shop is making excuses because they do not want to put an aftermarket cat on the car.

Wanting a nice set of black 17's with mint tires? Pm me.

If I remember correctly, I have the 91035 model. Its short, Its definately not 16".

I get a CEL from time to time, but I think its because I toasted the sensor when i transfered the pipes from my Sunfire to my Cav. I never got a CEL on my 'fire.

This was years ago, so I may be incorrect on the model number, but I know mine is a magnaflow cat, and its not 16" in length. I remember it being the 91035, but I have been known to be wrong.

Also, I apologize not getting back to you sooner about the 'fire, my dad ended up helping my bro get a car, an '01 Cav no less. Im jealous its the blue color I wanted.

What shop are you using? I might be using a shop to do mine again. I plan on getting a new Pacesetter header, cutting off the collector, getting an adapter to make it 2.5" and running 2.5" piping. The last time I had a shop do the work I found out it was shotty after about 4 months of having it on the car. Now I'm fighting with it hanging off the car and such, it sucks. So I'd like to take it to somewhere that will do the work correctly.

Yeah, this shop is supposed to be "the best around for custom exhaust systems" and yet I wasn't at all impressed with the guy I talked to. He was talking to me like I had no clue what I was talking about, I'm assuming because I'm a girl. I have done more than enough research on here pertaining to all the exhaust parts I now have in my possesion to know what I'm talking about. He also said it'd be about $400 just to install a header, catalytic converter, resonator, new mufflers and tips. This is without bending new piping or anything like that. I am going to talk to a different local shop and see what they have to say. All I want is to find a legitimate shop that can install everything the way I want and not a$$ rape me for it.

No problem on the car. Glad to hear your brother got a J w00t! I ended up deciding to keep the GT anyway . I am going to keep the Sedan for my mom because her '98 is getting up there in miles that way she won't have to have a car payment for a long long time.

I went to Exhaust Works in Montgomery to get an estimate, but like I said above, I am going to talk to another shop that's here in Sandwich because a $400 quote is and I just didn't like the way the guy I talked to was treating me and the stuff he was saying about the parts not fitting properly and all when I know damn well everything will fit just fine. I'll let you know how it goes with the shop here in Sandwich *crosses fingers*...

That should work it simply has a 02 fitting right on it instead of someone welding one on the pipe directly after it. I'd bet money its because you were a chick and they have to fill out the warranty card whenever installing a aftermarket cat, its federal law

400 is a bit high id say 250 or so to do all that as its prob 2-3 hours of labor and most charge 100 per hour, worst case take a dude along with you (he doesnt even have to know anything about cars) and if the muffler guy starts giving you @!#$ just have the guy instructed to flip out. Works every time

most exhaust shop 'experts' like to tell you that you dont know what your doing regardless of sex. its actually a big problem IMO.

Re: Will this catalytic converter work or not?

Well, I just went to the shop here in Sandwich and was quoted $150 to install the Pacesetter armor coated 4:1 header, Magnaflow high flow catalytic converter, Magnaflow 22" resonator and two Magnaflow mufflers with tips. It was actually a woman I talked to, go figure . She wrote everything down and then went in the back to talk to the guy that owns the place.

While the $150 is very nice compared to $400 at the other place, I am just concerned about the quality of work since the guy didn't actually look at any of the parts or even the car (the guy at the first place put the car on the lift to get a good look at everything). I know a friend of my dad who has a very nice Hot Rod was going to have his exhaust done at this local shop, but he ended up going somewhere else because his car was too low to get on their lift.

I am starting to get really frustrated because I want to make sure this is all done right the first time. I don't want to pay the $150 now, only to have to pay way more to have it fixed later because this place messed it up. I live in a small town and quality custom exhaust shops seem to be very few and far between. Should I trust this local shop, I mean, they do advertise very "loudly" that they do custom exhaust, among many other things including suspension, transmissions, etc. or do I go to the place that seems to be more "professional" but wants to a$$ rape me on installation? Any hints or ideas are greatly appreciated?

i would say have them install the header first, maybe the cat section as well and see how they do on that. (the cheap place) then go from there...

I can give you the number of my mechanic, and maybe he can refer you to a good shop. I know he wont do the exhaust work, he's not a welder of any kind. But I have used him to refrence me to other shops before and I've gotten great work done.

My brother is having the same issue with his headers for his 3800 s/c, $400 for install PLUS the exhaust.

Me on the other hand, Ill slap the header on, drive with it open like that to whereever, and get the work done. I dont care so much ;P.

I HATE the "Exhaust works" They overquoted me 2 times and couldnt give me any kind of estimate on anything over the phone. The guy is a pompus prick to say the least.

What is the name of the shop youre thinking about going to? and was it $150 out the door? Or was it $150 labor plus piping and parts?

That's a possibility. I was actually thinking the opposite; have them just put the mufflers and tips on and see how they do with that. I'll have to think about it and decide.

Yeah, I would definitely agree with you that the guy at Exhaust Works was a prick. I am going to talk to Rich at Automotive Specialties in Yorkville, see if by chance they could do it. They obviously know how to weld since it's a body shop and they actually advertise they do exhaust work so we'll see I guess. I'm going to go over there after work on Monday.

The shop in Sandwich is called like J&L Automotive I think. It's a regular shop, but they advertise a lot of other stuff they do as well. For some reason I am just kind of leery of taking it there though, I just have a feeling it would not be too high quality of work.

Yep, I sure do! Matt's had the pleasure of visiting Sandwich a few times actually . It's about 60 miles west of Chicago. Population about 6800. Home of the Sandwich Fair, the largest Fair in the state of Illinois. Sandwich FTW!

Did you get an estimate from the place you're taking your car too? Have you seen any of their work before? I really want to find a reputable shop to do my exhaust right the first time.

Scratch my last post Vince, I found your total for your new setup in another post. So, the shop is in Bridgeview huh? You'll have to let me know how well of a job they do. Any chance you could get their number for me so I can call for an estimate? I'd really appreciate it. I don't even want to drive the car because it's so loud . I need to get this exhaust stuff installed ASAP.

Great! Thanks for the info. Vince! All I'm looking to get done is having the header, cat, resonator, mufflers and tips installed so it sounds like it wouldn't be too much for that. I will definitely give him a call.

Too bad I'm installing the suspension on the GT tomorrow or else I'd take a ride up there. Thanks again for the info. and I definitely can't wait to see pictures of your new exhaust.
