I kinda want to get a side exit exhaust built, but im wondering....is it going to give me any performance gain, other than being louder? I was planning on having my cat moved further up the downpipe, and then having the ''cat-back'' pipe, lead to the side of the car rather than out the back. I know that if i just run it straight pipe, itll probably be WAY too loud though......
emissions is also a concern....how would those turn out?? i should i still pass right?

How is being louder a performace gain?
You'd gain a little just as you would with a larger cat-back I'd imagine, but you might lose a bit on the low end. With a cat, you'd be emissions legal, but probably too loud to not get pulled over.
side exit exhaust is mainly for looks

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!

Its not. I was just pointing out the fact that i'd be louder FOR SURE...
So side exit = no performance gain??????

It depends on how you have it set up. If you have an exhaust system fabbed to match the volume of a cat-back, you will see just as much gain.

So, what if i was planning on 1st, having the cat CUT out with an inch or so of extra pipe on it....separating that from the car. Then, cutting the downpipe short ~1 foot or so, then re-welding the cat back on. Then, having ALL the stock pipe from the cat-back removed....Then, having a 2.25'' or 2.5''*** pipe re-welded on from the cat back, and then having it exit out the side.
***My car's engine isnt really modded much, except for an intake...i plan on getting a header/downpipe later on. And even LATER on, i plan on getting some headwork and a turbo installed...for NOW, should i get a 2.25 or a 2.5 exhaust??
///ATLANTA~ATNALTA\\\
2.25 for the 2.2l, 2.5 for the 2.4l
Just make a gradual increase in size before it exits.

just for reference you wont be getting a passenger side pipe on before the tire without either moving the gas tank or having it drag on everything including the road itself.
another benefit from doing the DRIVER side exhaust is a little bit less weight, maybe 20-25 lbs. as you wont be using the pipe after the axel at all.
Less bends = more power, so yes it will give more power. But you really won't noitce a gain on a NA 4 cyl, unless you are revving to 8k+ RPMs.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.

So heres what ill do....Ill get the DRIVERS side exit exhaust now, just for looks and sound, and then when i go turbo later on, it'll give me an
effective gain as well.

One more thing; How do you make it taper a little bit like that before the exit??
///ATLANTA~ATNALTA\\\
the muffler shop should not have a problem doing this, or you can get a tip welded on.
The biggest benefit is what zZYAAAA said. You will be saving alot of weight by having it exit at the side as opposed to the rear. The trick will be getting it to sound good with no resonator.

FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
^^ it would be possible to sqeeze a cat and a resonator under the car though, just have to have the cat pretty far up close to the header and get a really small resonator.
Then where is the muffler going to go? I doubt he will have room for both. Maybe if the side exit is just before the rear wheel.

It will sound like ass on the highway... no matter how big your resonator is, it'll be barky as hell... and it will give you next to no ground clearance if your car is lowered.
Trust me, I know:

A mistake I would wish on no person... and one I will NEVER make again...

I ran a side exit, No cat, 2 glasspacks(2" louvered flowtech and a 2.25" perftube Cherry bomb) as well as various other mufflers, see Baffle packs(a.k.a Turbo packs) and it was always annoying as hell on the highway. Never had a clearance problem but I'm not lowered either.
food for thought: it's technically illegal (in Texas, check your local regs if you're concerned) to have the exhaust pipe exit under the passenger compartment, i.e. anywhere in front of the rear tires on a car. Trucks are a little different, since the cab doesn't usually go all the way back to the rear tires, so you can have side exit on a truck, unless you have a camper top, which is considered a "passenger compartment."
if you're taking off your cat and other stuff like that, you probably don't care, but at least you won't be ignorant.
Incidentally, I think if you can move the cat closer to the head, it may get to its 'light-off' temp quicker... this won't really give you any performace gain, but it should help with emissions... a little.
