2.4 crank info needed.
Saturday, December 29, 2007 12:56 PM
i did a quick search couldnt find exactly what i wanted. Basically the deal is i have a 99 2.4 engine that has a small knock in it. Im looking for a crank kit but im having no luck. Im just wondering whats the main thing that happens when a 2.4 lets go? the 2 ive changes have thrown a rod out of the front of the block.

Anyways this is a daily driver no mods really just looking for a cheap effecient way to get it back on the road. You cant here the knock until its about at 3k. Just wanting to know what i should expect to run into and what years are compatible.

Thanks.

Emry

Autozone sells decently priced crank kits. They are even performance oriented, chamfered, balanced, radiused, and indexed. The expensive part of a rebuild is the gaskets.

Heres what i would do... pull the motor have it hot tanked then build it up. Check on prices on performance rods and pistons. You may find some good deals on them and it would be worth doing a mild build if you are tearing it apart anyway.

well i purchased this car with intents to build it. But then I bought my z28 so i have no desire to build it. The engine only has 80k on it so i would just like to throw a crank kit. Thanks for the info about autozone. I work at oreillys but i cant get a crank kit for it. Ill call them.

But what are the weak parts of the 2.4 and where is it trouble prone? What all lower end parts will work in it?

the weak point of the 2.4 is the oiling system.

Number 3 bearing is usually one of the first things to go in our 2.4s as well.
