I gotta keep an eye on this. Someone finally started. I was just thinking of this today, and came to search to see if it was done. I think I'm going to do an LT or LS1.

somebody HAS dont this. there was a thread on it a long time ago. it was a yello cavalier. 2000-2002. chevy v8 and RWD
Working on obtainting an M-Class license... ?? Hint: 2 wheels.
im pretty close to done at this point i sent my rear out to be assembled and im waiting for it to return now but major things to do know is the floor and make a dash. my origional idea was a lt1 but that was quickly changed to a bb n i know it was done we established that about 4 pages ago

This is very cool. I was just thinking about this today, and scored my old Cavi for $500, gotta pick it up tonight. I'm looking at LT1's and LS1's right now. You went with an S10 chassis kit? I was looking at Jegster kits, the Cavalier is the older body style, I was thinking about the S10 kit.

yep thats what i used a s10 front end kit from S&W race cars i dont shop threw jegs so i dont know about there front end kit problems u will run in to is mounting the bitch because to the oilpan and k-member i had to have a custom oil pan made but a lt1 or ls1 is alil smaller then my bigblock

hey guys. .first post..
since i got my 97 Cavvy last weekend, i've been looking at it and asking myself how hard it would be to put a V8 in it and have it look somewhat oem.. i came to the conclusion that it can't happen the way i'd like it to, so i won't bother.
but this thread made me think of possibly the most (in)famous J body ever..
Rick Dobbertin's 1986 J2000 that hit all the major car mags over 20 years ago. i had a model kit of that car back in the late 80's.
Ok, I've got to subscribe to this....
I've been toying around with the idea, but in a complete daily driver setup. I've got the 350/700r and a few axles to throw in with all the suspension parts to convert it to dual control arms. Now I'm just looking for a 95-00 convertible body to start hacking on.
The goal is to make it look as if it came from chevy built this way.
phil... you do realize that a convertible J with that much power would just twist apart right? Roll cages aren't just for safety, they are for structural integrity as well.
If you haven't realized that already and you have seen how much work Alex has put into his, the chances of you ever doing it are close to nil... and the chances of a vert surviving it without any sort of cages is none...
Having a convertible doesn't mean that you can't reinforce the chassis. Looking at my 2dr this weekend while fabing up the exhaust, it was remarkably similar to my 82 firebird uni-body. Channeling the body for subframe connectors while expanding out the exhaust hump into a drivetrain tunnel.
If it doesn't work, all that I'll have proved is that I couldn't do it.
If it does work, I'll have the pride in knowing that I accomplished something that most everybody is sure can't be done.

I have got to comment at this point...
Dobbertin's J2000 was as notorious as it was famous in that the rear suspension was relatively nonexistent! All he had for rear springs as part of the four-link(?) he put in it was valve springs, which made for no real suspension travel. Not to mention how it had a tune to it that only allowed it to fire-up & cruise the fairgrounds. But then, that car was built for all show. Many have built better Pro-Street rides in that they actually ccould be driven on the street, and the highway. In fact, Hot Rod Magazine one year of the Nats had some of the most noteworthy Pro-Street rides (Amongst which was one by Troy Trippienier) go on a cross-country "shakedown" run to see how they faired in real world use. Thankfully they all faired well, except Troy's which needed front fender liners added (Mounted in a motorcycle fender fashion) to deal with the rain.
