my 2.2ohv billet cam is finally here, yay!

After many months of waiting it showed up yesterday.

This is a true one-off billet mechanical roller cam. The gear and end journal is a precision cast piece that comp uses on thier sbc cams.

Differences over my last cam

18% more Intake lift
17% more Exhaust lift
9% more duration

Few pics:

Sounds like in another 2-4 weeks I should have the motor back. Alot of which depends on if they need to sleeve each lifter bore or not.

I paid a little less, but you could have one made thru my shop and Comp cams, in whatever profile you want for $995.

Waaayy more than 99.9% of us would be able to spend on a cam! That is something you usually only see in all out race motors.

MMMM, Custom made solid billet roller cam! (as i drool all over myself!)

Little update.

The motor is almost done. They were just waiting on new rings and bearings (which youd think they would have ordered already since my motor has been there since november... but whatever).

Apparently, and luckily, they didnt need to sleeve the lifter bores for the Crower keyed lifters. They simply had to put the alignment groove in.

Here is a pic of the lifter and the lifter bore with groove (after machining, before cleaning).

Maybee Ill have it running in 3-4 weeks.

Only the best for Dan Can wait to see it together

Now if we could just get someone to make a billet copy of 2.3 cam blanks we would be in business, but it would probably be as much as Dan's cam

ok, lets see here:

secret cams, eh can u say joke? 5whp if your lucky

ho cams, ok sure... you can only use the exhaust cam without modification, but you need stiffer springs and the ho cam tower, intake cam, need to get the hex gear pressed into the end of it for use for power steering and get either the cam sensor lobe machined onto it, or just go without it.

w41's, same story, but guess what, they're stock grinds as well

lzm and jbp stage 2's, lift is jokingly close to stock, with a decent duration upgrade, but still not that good.

a few company's released aftermarket 2.3 and 2.4 cams, good luck finding them.

and no im not joking.

Well, its not like this is an option. I had to have this custom made from scratch at a cost of about 800 bux. Anyone can do the same, it just may cost 1000 bux a cam.

Anything is possible with enough time and money.

So I wouldnt realy call it an "option".

That was my point as well, it's an option everyone has if they're willing to shell out. We have zero OEM cam options, only regrinds. And guess what, we need stiffer springs for all decent grinds as well. We also have to pull the block to put the cam in, most people would kill to just have to press in a hex gear...You guys have it easy lol.

lol, i mean like in terms of aftermarket cams. i could have sworn over the years searching for parts ive seen several options, big name stuff too.

i know something i can win you guys can get a patriot head... we cant hahahhaha

Regrinds are available from just about any cam grinder, but there are some serious limitations. The OHV's use lobes with the same design as the Small Block Chevy hydraulic lobes, which means the are a ton of lobe profiles to work from. Unfortunitely, our cams use a tube center, with pressed on and swedged lobes. If ground too far, the lobes become weak and can slip on the center tube or fracture, so that limits the amount of lift that can be ground into the lobes and the spring pressure they can handle. Also, the cam ginder can only move the lobe centers forward or backwards (advance or retard) about one degree, which limits the profile design you can get ground.

IPP has what they call a solid billet cam, but as Dan has shown use in a previous thread, it's not a billet cam, but a casting. All roller cams (of any significance), require hard steel lobes to handle the roller wheel contact pressures, which the IPP cams don't have. They designed their cams for use with the stock springs, which limits their performance potential, but do appear to be improvements over the stock profiles. If the lobes are properly hardened, with stock springs, the cam should last, but I wouldn't put too much trust in them. JBP, Manta Part and LZM each have regrinds for our motors, but they are expensive, are of limited performance and let alone some of the issues with these companies.

What all this leaves you is, you're stuck with mild to moderate performace cams, unless you want to do like Dan did and buy a solid billet cam, for $800+. I'm looking to push the limits of our cam cores, with the next cam re-grind, with 0.500"+ lift (with 1.6 rockers), longer duration and moving the lobe centers to get the center lines I need for my application. This will require aftermarket springs (a whole other issue!) and machine work to the head for the springs.

So while there are options, they are very limited.

The challenge for most of us with an LN2 is finding or making options which don't cost big $$. Dan's the exception. He just picks up the phone and says "Build it!"
