Re: 086 Swap - Questions..

ok. I got most of the parts that I ordered in the mail in the last couple days. The last major part is the 086 head. I need to either put more pressure on the machine shop who I want to have do the work on it, or just buy a stocker and send it off to a couple different places to get the work done the same way Josh Dearman is going to do. So, we'll see.. That's just about the only hurdle I have left, besides installation.. I think I'm going to go ahead and do the 2.2 coil swap, and variable timing via 2.3 ICM.

I might just use the Fel-Pro head gasket that came in my gasket set instead of the Cometic one since I can't find anyone who can get a hold of the Cometic H-2379SP1 or has even heard of it before. Even the people at Cometic are scratching their heads. So, I don't know how Dale pulled it off, but I (and other people) would appreciate it if he could get a hold of like 3 or 4 more.

well i have been watching this thread for a while a reading back and forth to fully understand the swap. Wow I just love how we can do so much to the LD9. Now just to clarify, reason for the swap is because the 086 head is better flowing, and do I still have to drill the block if I get the new cometic gasket mention just recently. I plan on doing this secret head swap while I do the secret cam swap. So please help me better understand the process. Thank you guyz

No problem WhitePhatt I'm just glad to be able to help out every now and then.

DOHC Tuner no with the Cometic gasket you match the coolant passages in the head to the head gasket, you don't have to do anything to the block.

Okay great because i was a little sceptical bout drilling the block, now when you match the coolant passages from the 086 to the cometic gasket doyou mean i still have to make the lil holes bigger in the head along with the gasket?

I wonder if we couldn't possibly get a clearer diagram regarding what holes in the head need to be newly drilled, and those that need to be widened?

Anyone to that stage yet?

Agreed

Where could we pick up other things like SS valves, stiffy springs n such.
I checked out over on quad 4 forums, but wanted to ask here too.

Well.. With my head, I'm sticking to the stock 086 springs, but I am going with oversize SS valves.

You can get the valves from eBay seller: fcrcmach

They seem to always have them in stock..

Regular size SS 086 Valves
Oversize SS 086 Valves

Both are $189.95 w/ $12.00 shipping = $201.95 total

As far as better springs go, I heard that you can use titanium LT1 springs in the 086 head, although I have yet to read anything personally regarding that. My source for that information is good however.

Cool thanks.
Now all I gotta think about yould be a header for it.

Quad 4 forums lists some Crane Came springs.
But for them and the retainers its like over $200
yikes.

If you are asking about an exhaust header I'm going to polish the stocker and use it cause nobody makes an after market header for the 2.3. The stock one actually looks pretty bad ass .. especially for a stocker.

WhitePhatt can you provide a link to the Titanium LT1 springs? I am planning on reving really high and the only alternative to the stock stuff I have found is the manta part duel valve spring set up. Although I won't get to do this swap for a while.

I haven't actually found any LT1 titanium valve springs. All I've heard is that they will supposedly work with the 086 head without modification, but if you are seriously considering using the LT1 springs I would make sure that the dimensions are the same before plunking down the change for them. Don't take my word for it.. Don't take anyone's word for anything unless they've done it before and know first hand cause here-say mistakes can get expensive.

As far as springs go.. Skilz10179 in This Thread says he's running stock springs and reving to 7600 without any problem. I have posted a question regarding what 'stock' spring he's actually using. As best as I can tell though.. There aren't any differences between the HO, or LO springs according to RockAuto.com's Catalog Lookup Information In fact, that is the same spring that's used in the:

# 2.3L 138cid L4 MFI (3)
# 2.3L 138cid L4 MFI (D)
# 2.3L 140cid L4 MFI (A)

So, the stock 2.3 spring should be fine (assuming this information is correct, and I believe it is).

As awesome as titanium valve springs, or dual valve springs would be I really don't think you, or I need them since there isn't any extra power to be gained up passed 5800 anyway (barring some crazy cam, to make for some difficult city driving). The stockers should be great since they'll go up to a confirmed 7600, and probably more. I personally wouldn't sweat it..

ok, i'm looking to be ordering my 086 head by the end of the week from JC on ebay...if i win that is..the only thing i'm slightly worried though is that they milled down the bottom of the head .015" to enssure that it has the best seal possible, but would this not raise my CR from 10.7:1 to around 11:1? (keeping in mind i have 9:1 pistons and a .020" overbore.) in tern leaving me with always having to run 91+ octane pump?

Re: 086 Swap - Questions..
Wednesday, May 23, 2007 1:08 PM
yep your final CR would be around 11:1. I have the 9.5:1 pistons so mine will be around 11.5:1-ish but yes, you will have to run 91+.

I know.. I'm like 'gaah! it's expensiiiiiiiive' then my brother is like 'it's only like $4 extra per tank' then I calm down. So, I dunno.. I definantly wouldn't want this car to be my daily driver, and it won't since I ride my bike to work a whole 1/4mi away which will be changing in about 4 months hopefully, so the Sunfire will probably end up being my daily driver of 45mi one way which is going to kind of suck, but not as much as a friggin' Suburban! Anyway.. Long story short, yes your feelings are correct you will have to run 91+. You might be able to get by with 89 or 90 with a good tune, but I'll be stuck with 91.

Ive had these links saved for when I do my build. 086 head mod (scrol halfway down)

Mod the 2.3 gasket to fit using your 2.4 gasket as a template install with 2.3 gasket. You need the intake/exhaust manifolds too.

...You can always tell the drive-by posters who haven't read the entire thread.

I bought my head today. Luckily, I didn't have to compete with Thrice. I kinda think he either forgot, or just didn't have access at the time of the auction end.

hahaha yeah. They should post another one in a day or so, that's how they usually work it..

I got an eBay notice that fcrcmach's auctions were all removed for some reason. Those are the guys I bought the oversize SS valves from, so I emailed them yesterday, and I have yet to hear back regarding if they've shipped yet. I'm holding my breath hoping I didn't get ripped off.. They're a reputable company, but geez.. So much of this entire transaction hinges on trust and personal honor... So, I'm crossing my fingers...
