I'm also not going to run gobs of boost for a long cruise or just around town. The control gives me the ability to crank the boost at the track or the on ramp.
I've run 11psi CONSISTANTLY (not daily) on our Turbo W41, w/o any mechanical failures (its even seen 20+psi once)...... I've been on both Quad4 Forums and here for many years, and have never heard the "9-10psi exploding point". The Quad 4 Rods and Crank are more then up to the abuse, and as long as you keep the detonation down, your pistons and its ring lands should hold.
I cant wait to see this stroker run, I've been collecting parts to start a very simular build soon.

Thanks! Granitsilber Metalic is sort of a rare color amoung bimmers, so I like braggin about it lol. Are you the guy planning on tuning Tjepke's car when its done, or do I have you confused with somebody else?
I'm not sure on the reason for the psi limit...I'm guessing that Phil doesn't want the HO to explode before I get the stroker done. If I can get it tuned and running well at 10psi, then I'll run 10psi, but to be safe, 7psi is a good limiting point.
I plan on driving the car a lot, so ,maybe he figures 7psi to make sure the motor doesn't detonate and fry a piston. I just go by what I've read and been told so far. I'm also told that the headgasket might not live with the m90 pushing that much air as well. All I have to say is I'll see for myself.
yeah...but isn't PSI sorta insignificant? i thought what REALLY mattered was cfm?
well then...I'm pushin the (what was it again LOL) 311cfm with the m90 with the 200 whatever through the motor...so there would be my 7psi I guess. that would be like 10-11 with a smaller compressor, if I do the math right.
Well, I wont be running it remote, I will be building an intake for it, and tuning VIA megasquirt as well, basically the only reason for putting the M90 on is to have a reason to put the megasquirt on something as a trail run, before I install it on my turbocharged and built 96 Twin Cam, so we will see how it goes.
Ahh...I stand corrected...I thought there was one that was pretty simple (about as simple as a power-adder can get), but I guess I was mistaken.
Still can't wait to see this thing. I think this thread has gotten me interested in my fire again

just letting everyone know im only prepping right now...after seeing that the exhaust ports of the head are acutally almost flush with the exhaust gasket ( anyone thats seen the two together knows how amazing that is) i see that i need to take alot more metal out of the exhaust manifold to let it flow better( wish i had a header) the new lifters and rotators are currently at the bottom of a bucket of 0w40 oil soaking up waiting for their day in the sun

..tomorrow the valves go in the head..saturday it all comes together! stay posted for more pics and videos!
so what you saying is that you are gonna run the m90 on the stroker when its done right?
if so are you building it stonger too so that you can throw more boost in to it
yup, M90 on the stroker with th 20-22 psi (full pressure on the 3" pulley). should push about 450-550 (hopefully) FWHP when done.
086 head P&P with ceramic coated valves
custom cam with .231 duration on .419 lift
forged pistons +.030"
forged rods
lightened/knife edged crank
full dynamic balance
cryotreat
lightweight flywheel
stage 5 clutch (not very street able, but I can cope with it)
W41 trans with LSD (still paying on it) with cryotreatment
It should hold to 750+ hp with the right injectors. I'm looking at 750cc and 1600cc injectors right now. 1600cc might be a bit big, since the megasquirt will make running rich unnecessary. I'm also looking into running 10:1 on E85 fuel. That way, if I choose to go back to N/A, I still have the good comp ratio and can run 94 octane.

Be sure to check the piston to valve clearance this time before starting it up.

To spin a M90 to 22psi it will consume about 70+ hp from the motor, also M90 maxes out around 400whp according to the map i'm looking at right now....
With a nice turbo set up you can make the hp #'s you're after on about half the boost you're talking about.

I would also need to do all the lovely plumbing, have an exhaust manifold made, and find a place to mount the massive turbo that would displace 180CI per motor revolution, and then worry about the lag time associated with said huge turbo. Of course I could go with a remote mount turbo. I'm looking at 5-7psi of boost at like 2000rpm right now. The m90 is my best solution at this time. later on I might use the twin boost setup like has been used on other cars on this site. I'll keep the m90 for now though.
just finished port matching and polishing my exhaust manifold for the stroker..more pics and maybe vids to come tomorrow ..STAY TUNED!
well guys sorry to say i didnt get the engine running today..turns out my intake valves are toast too so i have to order another set..should be here tuesday,..but till then here are some more pics..first here is the hot mechanic that broke my engine down in under 2 hours
i did get alot of work done to my exhaust manifold yesterday..as you know i cant get a header yet..so i had to match my exhaust manifold with the port job on the head..first here are some pics of the STOCK manifold..then the port job i did
here is the stock HO collector
here it is after i got it ported out to 2.25"
here is the stock ports..notice the black around them..this the gasket line..if you would place the exhaust gasket over the ports the black represents the amount of metal exposed..well,you get it
and now since my head exhaust ports are port matched i had to do the same to my manifold ports
i got them almost perfect to the gasket
hopefully all this will let the stroker breath alittle better till i can fab up a header...what you guys think?
Looks great, I really hope you don't find something else wrong with your engine. I would of given up along time ago but I guess that is why I'm not doing this and you are mad props.
In the planning stage for an all American TRD Cavalier.
i'm still patiently waiting. i sympathize for all your crappy set backs. way to keep at it though. for some reason stroking a 4 cylinder always intrigued me. good luck getting her together. hopefully it lives up to your expectations.
Why are the intake valves toast? I thought you put in new ones.
Where do you find a mechanic like that?
we suspect the intake valves are bent..not alot , but enough to look like theyll lose compression.

at gm in austin texas of course
My brother lives in Austin but he never told me about the women mechanics......
I sure hope the new intake valves gets the job done..... I know with a new engine and and all your mods that there may be other issues to work out.... Hang in there with that mechanic. Makes the work a lot more enjoyable.....
*UPDATE*
the stroker is up and running again ! i idled it for about 20 minutes today without much issue..i still need a few things to make it right..like i need more back pressure thats for sure..its running off a 3 ft. down pipe right now..so ill put on the cat and muffler tomorrow and see how it runs and sounds..ill have vids for you later tonight if you want to watch . THANKS GUYS!
woa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yes yes yes lets see some vids damn you (lol)
hondas are like tampons.....every pu$$y needs one...
mildly built 99' ln2, eagle h-beam rods, wiseco forged alum. pistons, cusco oil catch, t3/t4 super 60 garret, tial 40 mm wastegate, hp tuners, prothane mount inserts, 2.5" exhaust.
ok before i post vids i wanted to show just how much the exhaust side of this head is ported..it really amazed me..
just to get perspective this pic is of a stock 2.3 exhaust gasket over a port i polished my self..i know the pic is bright but you can still make out how much metal there is between the port and the edge of the gasket
and here is a pic using the same gasket but over a port on the fully PnP 086 head
i had to take just as much out of the exhaust manifold to match it..and it now looks like this
Wow, that's insane. Good luck man, waitin on the vids personally
