Eco Swap
Thursday, December 14, 2006 1:10 PM
alright well this is only to see what people have been paying for this stuff?

So far:
Motor - 550
Tranny - 600
ECU - ???
Wiring Harness - ???
Motor Mount - ???
Pay Someone To Wire It Up - ???

What else would i need if thats not all?
do i really need to get the gas tank and lines for it to run?

From What I've read since my car is the newer 2.2 OHV i dont need to change the Clutster just rewire it with the new motor?

Also ,this is probly a stupid question, does it matter which VIN the motor is? will they both work with the manual tranny?

Motor 450usd, Trans 350usd. Everything will cost me no more than $1500usd and im going aftermarket with some stuff lol.

VIN # doesn't matter. Keep the receipt for them though. just in case a shop notices 2 different vin numbers and calls the cops thinking they are hot.

how much is the wiring harness from GM? should i try callin around to junkyards to see if they kept the harnesses of them? do i haveta ask for one that had a manual tranny on it or one that matches the VIN on the motor? lookin to do this ASAP cuz theres sumthin wrong with my tranny and my motor runs pretty good but i beat the hell out of it. im guessing you probly have a lot of salvage yards with wrecked cavy's? how many miles does ur motor and tranny have? theres only one tranny available to me right now but i got a choice of motors for like 550 to about 750 depend on the milage. i can get one with 1300 on it. should i spend a couple hundred mor for it or no? i probly wont have much money for the motor so itll be stock for awhile

motor has 1056kms, trans has 15,xxx As long as its under 20k's then dont worry about the mileage. if one with 2000kms is $700 and one with 15,000 is $500, get the $500 one. No point in spending the extra cash.

Wiring harness im not sure on pricing. I know someone who told me $50. not sure if thats good or bad though.

few junkers around me, there were 4 available ecos when i was there.

You need a engine bay wiring, a ECU, a radiator, hoses. Would be best to get a BCM from the same car the motor came from then your actual mile will show. It is truly best to get a complete car to do this swap. We have done a few of these. Usually can get a whole car for $700-1200, and everything you need is there.

Well first off you are forgetting welding in a new transmission braket. 2200 and Eco have different mounts spots. The bellhousing on them are different. As for wiring if you get the right wiring harness it just plugs in. Not sure what you where thinking on that one. Just letting you know you need to have this to pull this off

Eco engine with all acc and sensors
Eco getrag 5-speed transmission
New clutch and flywheel would be smart...
Wiring harness with computer
Rad too cause the lines are different on them. Some have made things work.

I could be forgetting something, but I think that is it. I'm about to start getting my swap ready for my Sedan. Also since you are 2000+ you don't need a new gas tank to do this.

Re: Eco Swap

I spent $684 for motor/tranny/ecu/harness... another $125 for the eco rad..

So:

Engine - Tranny - Computer - Wiring Harness - Radiator

The wiring harness has all the hookups for the sensors right?

How big of a difference is the tranny mount and the motor mount? any welding i can get done because thats what im studying in college right now till spring.

that about cover it?

Well you suck and have an auto! If only it was that easy for us with 5-speeds. I hope I get the PM first if you find one before I buy one, but I think I might have almost everything I need. Also hit me up aaron how much you get that rad. for.

Re: Eco Swap

where di you guys get ur comp and wiring harnesses at? did ya just ask for them to give ya it with the motor when ya bought it? pretty much only thing im a little worried about gettin cuz i havent even looked for one yet.

also how much different is the tranny mount?

if anyone is in Northwest iowa that know how to do this it would be great.

Re: Eco Swap

Alright well i called every single autosalvage place in the phonebook and theres only 1 donor car i can buy and its 2000 bux with 80k on it but it is a manual so thats good. Manuals are very hard to come by around here i guess since theres only 2 i can get right now. is it worth it for the donor car or should i just piece the stuff together? the donor car i @!#$ up in the back but it could be a nice project car for the future too.

if someone lives around me and wants the body we could work out a deal and ill just take the stuff i need.

he doesn't need to weld anything, only 95-99 would have to do any welding.. way to scare the guy!

2000+ the eco is a direct drop in.

ecotec swap into 2000+ jbody
I think this post from early this year should be made into a sticky.. I know it would help a lot of people out because this swap is not as hard as everyone makes it out to be.

for a 2000+ to an ecotec (5spd to 5spd) you don't have to weld anything i'm not sure about auto to auto or from auto to 5 speed or vice versa

you need the following:

-ecotec engine (03 or higher preferrable)(junkyard)
-ecotec transmission (junkyard)
-ecotec wiring harness and ecu (junkyard)
-ecotec belt driven accesories (if needed)(a/c, alternator) (junkyard or autostore)
-ecotec clutch (aftermarket)
-ecotec flywheel (aftermarket)
-ecotec radiator (radiator shop)
-ecotec fuel return line (dealer)
-ecotec upper and lower radiator hoses (dealer)
-ecotec upper motor mount (junkyard or aftermarket... TurboTechRacing or RKSport)

everything else is compatible and able to be used to swap over to the other engine.
be sure to have some cash to hit the auto store and extend vacuum lines and powersteering lines and the like because you will have to solve those problems as they arise. Everything else is explained and showed in my writeup.

good luck

thanks PJ watchin everything you've done with yours made me wanna do this (have pretty much the same exact car as you). i live in a place that no one cares about cavy's except me one other guy that i know of. after gettin everything bought and installed how much did it cost you? did you buy a lot of aftermarket parts because you knew you were goin to be modding the motor shortly after it was in? would it be smart to get the lightened flywheel and the spec stage II clutch n pressure plate before i have everything put in? i plan on doin some stuff but nuthin major for now. i do plan on gettin the gm charger ASAP but that could be 2 months it could be a year before i could afford it.

as for the AC can i not have it on there or is there no one that makes a belt without the compressor? i dont like to use mine in the summer cuz i dont think it gets that hot and just wanna get get rid of it so theres a litle more room to work in the bay.

Read through that whole post, funny I didn't see it when I built my 2.4 up last january, but aside from that, having a stock 2.4 would the getrag 5-spd bolt up to the ecotec, or do you still need the newer tranny??

HP Tuners | Garrett T3/T04B | 2.5" Charge Pipes | 2.5" Downpipe | 650 Injectors | HO Manifold | Addco front/rear | Motor Mounts | HKS SSQV | Spec stage 3 | AEM UEGO Wideband | Team Green LSD | FMIC | 2.3 cams | 2.3 oil pump swap | 280WHP | Now ECOTECED

i think im like the only person that cant get my motor and tranny for less than 1k. i think im going to buy the car for 2 k unless someone can find me one for cheaper kind of near me that way i have everything i need and then have a car for later in life or someone else. the only thing i dont like about it is it has 80k is that too many miles to get for 2 k? they said they wont go any lower because the got the car for 2200 bux and wont part it because they wanna get most of thier money back on it.

SpeedRacerZ told me that 2200 5-speed to Eco 5-speed you needed to weld. I'm planing on doing this to my 01' not my other two J's. If I don't have to weld then I might be able to do this faster then I thought. Only thing would be holding me back is havin' the bellhousing swaped over and getting that TeamGren LSD with HHR gear ring to step up the gears.

Spec Stage III Clutch n Pressure Plate - 386.10 (Nippon Power)
ECU - 85 (Junkyard)
