Just trying to get my facts straight, I have read and read about this and asked a million questions. I know the secret cams work with the 086 head swap and the HO cams wont. My question is, what is the max lift you can use with the 086 on a 2.4? Also if I went with the HO cams (assuming the 086 wasnt even an issue) modded for the cam sensor, should I wait to install them until i get HP tuners or will they work without it?

Depends entirely on the pistons you choose. If you are asking about what the highest lift on a stock 01' 2.4L, I don't know for sure, but I would just go with secret cams until you can change out the bottom end.

Work = yes
work well = no
The power curve for the H.O. cams is far too radical for the stock ecu to give a decent tune. I'd say just do secret cams until you can afford HPTuners, then sell them.

I thought that the HO cams do clear on the 2.4l with an 086 head!
H.O. cams clear either with the 2.4L head or with a piston change when using the 086 head. Ask Gilles.

The HO cams are built for the 086 head so I don't know where you got that they dont work. You got the CPS and power steering issues, and Brian was right, you need something to tune the HO cams. Brian and Gilles are your best sources for info. I have done most of my research, just waiting for the money. Everything I have heard about the HO cams clearing the stock pistons is un-decisive but mostly people say they won't work. Like it has already been said stick with the secret cams for now.

You're asking a site full of people who have never attempted this before. So you're just going to get a post full of answers from people who really don't know what they are talking about. Unless you've tried to put these peices together your your own hands and built a functioning motor don't try to answer his questions.

I'll let you know shortly....I'm sending my block off to the machine shop later this month and will be starting to build my hybrid 2.4/2.3 w/ 086 and HO cams running megasquirt full standalone so I can get rid of the CPS problem and tune for 3bar boost.
Thanks for all the info. I planned on building my top end with an 086 head and I have some HO cams but wont be able to afford HPtuners til tax returns. And when I build my bottom end next summer I dont feel like spending a huge amount of money on custom pistons, that way I can get the eagle rods. I wonder if i can get the cams reground with less lift so they fit.
If your going to regrind them just sell them and get the secret cams.....they fit and will be basically what you will have after you regrind your HOs and you will be that much more money ahead of the game.

I would suspect that you aren't going to be using stock pistons or flat top forged pistons, given that the 11.7 static compression is going to be a bitch to tune on 15+psi.

I really can't believe you want to use stock pistons with eagle rods...You would be better off getting both at the same time, to save yourself headaches down the road (but to each their own).
I believe the Wiseco 9:1 pistons will clear the H.O. cams, because I'm pretty sure that
Merlin is running those on his hybrid.

It is only one of the cams that doesn't clear...I guess I forgot to mention that part. I forget which one though (I'm thinking exhaust). As long as their is a little dish like the Wiseco 9:1 has, that should be plenty clearance for the valve.
That looks like a pretty good deal, I guess. I spent about $50 more buying the pistons and rods seperate. I bought the pistons from
Summit, and the rods from
cnc-motorsports.

I thought it was the intake cam.

I want to agree with this but i haven't seen it with my own eyes so i can't be sure.
There was a former member of J-BOM that was running a 2.4 block with a 086 head, that i know for a fact and i've even road in the car a few times. He had the motor built by a shop, they claimed they used 2.3 HO cams and JE 9:1 2.4L pistons and had no issues with valve clearance. Take that for what you will...

Yes, I will be running custom Weiscos from Karo with a final CR of 9:1 after the 086 head is on.

The weiscos 9:1 doesn't have any dish.
Yes they do. They don't have reliefs, but they definately have a dish...otherwise there would be no way they lower compression.
Karo might be hooking you up with flat top pistons with reliefs (bringing compression down to 9:1), but the standard Wiseco 9:1 pistons have a dish (model #K584M905). I built my own motor, so I know first hand.

Wiseco 2.4L 9:1 forged pistons.....

Yup...sorry guys right after I posted and went to work, I remembered they do....I too own a set of them!!! I dont know why but I have a '00 2.4 and got the stockers confused with the weisco's. My bad....
I yet dont know what I'm getting from Karo....all I know is it going to be 9:1 final w/ 086 on a 2.4L with clearance for HO cams, however that is required, reliefs or dish I dont know yet.

mine has valves pocket in them. i got them from karo. they are 9:1 and give a 10.5:1 with the 086 head.
