First of all my car is a 96. and putting a cat' back in is my last option.
story time:
changed the 2nd o2 sensor at about 100k miles. i was down there and i got a good deal on the pair of sensors from a close frined at a gm shop. so no codes, didnt have a code to begin with, just changed it with the addition of the new first 02 and new header/downpipe/cat set up..
at 135k miles, we swapped the motor to a 2k one, no codes.
basically drove 40k +miles with the isuzuperformance header/high flow cat(carsound) and 02 sensor. no codes.
install the s/c= EGR code i was clearing and that is the only one that popped up.
removed the cat', installed a 02 simulator. only code is still the egr, but i think clearing it upon starting up the car each time made the computer not care about non working 2nd 02.
the red light i thought was blinking on the 02 sim'. but i can not remember.
remove the s/c. NO more egr code obviously. BUT... i get a 2nd 02 sensor no CKT activity code.
Red light on 02 sim isnt blinking.
OK.. maybe i got a bad simulator. SO i buy a ZZ peformance one.
HOOK it up, turn on the key to clear my code and the damn thing melts and smoke is coming from under the hood and it stinks. simulator has melted on the one side.
Why the heck would that thing melt and the first one not work?
I got a caspers 02 one coming to try and a exchange one from ZZ performance.
I checked the wiring, thinking maybe the 96 is a f'd up year. well the book says no 2nd 02. but the 96 2.2 showes the wires/colors, and the wires/colors are same from 95- 00. so that cant be a problem like i thought maybe in 96 they swapped some wires for some stupid reason.
I have power off the 02 plug. i sorta looked over the wires for a short, but i dont think that is a possiability as the stock sensor was working previously and i have power..
am i missing something? any ideas? suggestions? help?
so my plan of attack as of now-
hook up the stock 02 sensor, just to see what the car does outta humor.
try the caspers 02 SIM. (also works in my buddys 96 he said).
try the exchanged zz performance one ( hope it dont burn up again)
if not- throw on a high flow cat and 02 sensor .
with the code, car runs great. when i clear the code for the 02' , it runs ok, but taking off it has a nice hesitation. so i leave the code on, and i still get 27miles per gallon and a stock acting car. just want the stupid code gone. argggggggggh
thanks

smoked a casper 02 simulator i got today.
i hooked up my stock 02 and it didnt do fry it(thank you), and it just heated up like normal.
so i will rock the CEL, until i get a high flow cat installed.
summit has one with the 02 bung in it for 75$ to my door. then i have to set up a appointment with the exhuast shop and back to normal.

U smoked it... meaning... it melted too?!!
Jake do the manual O2 sim. It will cost you maybe $10 tops. It works, I have it, Chris(from up your way had/has it). Also I noticed with my car that after I got rid of my code the car ran smoother, but that took about a week.
FU Tuning
my car runs smoother with the CEL on.
i will just get a high flow cat like i used to have, and put my resonator back in. at least the car will not smell funny anymore.
i found out why i fried it.
95-96 have power going striaght through to the 02 sensor.
97-00 have what i believe to be a resistor in the plug. at least that what the diagram looks like.
f'n 96.

I haven't had a second o2 on my 97 Z for 3 years now... not a single problem. Did you try unhooking it altogether?

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Go find a 97-99 PCM and then do the re-pin on the harness for the new PCM and you'll be set to go.
i will try unhooking it all together see what happens.
97 ecu is not a option. too much work and it isnt worth it on my car.
Team GREEN
when you clear the code , you reset all the fuel trims
so the car has to relearn them again , that is where you get the hesitation from
by the time the code sets , the car has learned most of what it needs

If you were to keep the charger, would you consider it then?

Okay I recently am having a problem with my secondary o2. My car stock was throwing a cel because there was a niclkle size hole on the top of the piping that we couldn't get the welder into when we put my 2.5 inch down pipe into the stock size. I did a full 2.5 inch exhaust last week and the cat. I ordered was miss stocked and they couldn't get one in for like another week. Well I had to get my car back together to get back to school so I just ran a straight through setup with no cat and within about 500 miles or less it threw a code. So would you guys recommend I install a cat and call it good or try a 02 simulator? I have a 2001 2.4L that has the reflash and am running a turbo setup. Thanks in advance!
~Boost. Its what's for dinner!~
use HPT and just turn the sensor off
100 times easier and it always works.
