Depends on a LOT of variables, sometimes its in open loop, sometimes its in closed loop.

As stated above. Maybe we can help more if you tell us why you are wanting to know? Are you having a issue?

Typically you are in open loop mode when the engine hasn't reach normal operating temp, at wide open throttle and when throwing certain Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Under "Normal" driving conditions, you should be in closed loop mode. There are other conditions in which you would be in certain modes, but those listed above are the most common conditions.

well im planning on getting my turbo setup installed on my car when i take the drive back to connecticut to see family. my uncle works at a garage and they been holding a turbo and the works for me. i have read many different things about it and i have previously owned saab turbos but this would be the first time im puting one into a naturally aspirated engine. i would ask my uncle for help and info but since i moved down here to florida they kinda hate me for just leavng, but oh well at least i get a turbo setup for free. and its the turbo setup off the saab 9-3

Elmo, can you hook me up with a turbo setup from a saab.

And also, when you turbo your ride, look into water/alcohol injection for cooling. I've had some good success with both N/A but especially boosted applications.

thats the beauty of having all your uncles work on saabs, i can get whatever i want from them for free.....my only problem with them is their all mad at me for moving to florida....shhh, wait until they find out i have a baby on the way i think their really gonna get mad at me for that. ohh well, i just cant wait to get my turbo setup. i miss my old saab i had it running at about 18 pounds of boost...well my uncle did, i just drove it. man did that car move with suck a grace, im hoping to do the same with my cavalier after some engine work. if it wasnt for free parts i wouldnt be able to do anything until after the baby is born

Well none of that explained why you need to know what you asked? Not trying to be a dick just asking. Where in Florida are you?

im in st petersburg. and the reason i had asked is because i think i read somewhere that if your ecu is in open loop or closed loop, i forget which one but its bad when you try to increase the amount of boost. something with the air feul ratio. im tired so please excuse me if i dont sound like i know what im talking about and i keep rambling on. i need a vacation, cant wait to go back to connecticut for a few

I think he might be talking about the lack of open loop mode on 2003+ ecotecs. They always try to hit 14.7:1. Don't know much about this.

Completely false, all eco's have open and closed loop operation, that was a rumor started that grew into an urban legend.

Not trying to jack the thread, but I heard the same thing. I was planning to put nitous on the cav, but I was told that some 03's and all 04's had a lack of open loop. So if I wanted to go nitrous, I needed to change out the ecu to an 02.

I know I did lots of reading on this. I'm not sure I would say it is completely false, or completely true. No support either way. Truly at this point it does not matter. Anyone considering boost should also be considering HPTuners. With that you should be able to get around issues like that if it really does exist.
