I have a 1999 cavalier with the 2.2L engine and i need more power to keep with my buddys that drive mustang gts and civics with swaps. what are some good cheap mods that i can do? i am looking for about 30 horsepower
Buy a different car. 30 HP won't get you anywhere near them.
First off, the engine you have is something to be desired. You could do the basic bolt ons. P&P. Turbo. S/C. Nice try, but you'll need a lot of money before you hit them.
And this might get locked for stating you need to 'keep up' with your buddies, because I'm sure as hell it isn't on the track.

yea, nothing "cheap" is really gonna get u near 30 more horse.. i dont even think this will be enough to keep up. you may want to look into maybe gettin about 180 horse, maybe more, out of the engine... do the basics... new intake, headers, full exhaust, get the B&M shiftplus shift improver... then step it up, go with the GM supercharger kit if you really wanna put out some serious horse... another thing that will help that not an excessive amount of people will do, is weight reduction, like remove spare tire, sound deadening material, seats, etc... you should be up around 180 hp if not more, and at a time where u could possibly "keep up" with them, whatever you may mean by that.
make sure u do plenty of research before you jump into something even this big. i realize that its not that big of a gain, but still, whenever u jump into something like this you want to know exactly what you need, what it will produce, and any side effects.
theres plenty of info out there, i mean its the feakin internet, lol.. u just need to know how to look for it. and for the J body, here's the place to start.
good luck dude!

good cheap mods
there is no such thing. if its a good mod, then its not cheap. if its cheap, then it wont be good.

Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
Build or swap your motor and add nitrous or boost. Its not going to be cheap and you still may not keep up with your friends. What trans do you have? What do those cars run? I would say your looking at alteast $2000 to run into the 13's and thats if you can work on your own car.
