This summer when I start my turbo install, I plan to put forged rods into my ecotec for a little added safety. Does anybody have a step by step timeline with pictures of this kind of thing. I've never ripped apart an engine, much less put one back together. But I'm going to do mine. I'm thinking of finding an older engine, and taking it apart just for a little experience before doing my own.
Also, since I'm going to have it apart, is there anything else I should do to ensure it's still running healthily? It has 56,000 miles on it now, and I'd like it to last a while.
-Thanks

You really shouldn't replace the rods unless you replace the pistons. If you replace the pistons, you should have your engine bored out a little to clean up the walls. Thats why people don't usually just do rods, its always rods and pistons, and usually requires the removal of the engine to do so.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
that is pure crazy talk your motor will last ten times longer with the stock rods than with u changing them there will be complication almost guaranteed and u will end up taking the motor in to be rebuilt anyway u can't just replace internals like externals just get all your parts ready and when its time just go get the motor completely built u will have way more hair and be a much happier person
If going turbo he should replace the pistons anyway, something forged and lower compression. On top of that, there is a lot involved in removing an engine, tearing it down and rebuilding it. I'm in the process of doing that right now with turbo sunbird engine. Before even considering parts, you should think about what you want to get from your engine. If you know how much power you would like your engine to make, and how much boost you want to run, then you'll at least know which parts you can keep and what you have to replace. Anyway, I'm sure you'll have lots of fun with that
heres quick run down of what u have to do to change rods.
Some tools needed (dont remmeber all of them)
15mm socket
7/8 socket
18mm socket
i tihnk 7/16 socket
10mm socket
1 1/4 socket (timing chain tensioner...do not drop the tensioner bolt u break it gotta buy a new one)
5/8 socket
inch/LB torque wrench
FT/LB torque wrench
might be some more those are off the top of my head.
1)PUT ENGINE AT TDC. (#1 cylinder is at the top of its stroke. with the eco u have 2 different colored links on timing chains. 1 set has 2 blue Links and 1 red and one has 2 silver links and 1 gold. turn the engine over until thos links line up correctly. 1silver (or blue) on the crank. gold (or red) on the intake cam and the 2nd silver (or blue) on the exhaust cam.)
***it helps to make marks on the crank and cam gears to make sure u have correct tooth on them***
2)empty ALL oil from oil pan.
3)Remove oil pan.
4)Remove cylinder head and timing chain (its easy to keep cams on cylinder head)
5)Remove ladder frame. it connects on the bottom of the block and holds the crankshaft in.
**although when u remove that ladder frame if ur timing chain is off the crank, ur crank will come right out when rods arent connected to it.**
6)next u have to undo the bolts off the rod caps. so u can tap out the piston and rod.
7)tap out each piston and rod.
8)next u remove the piston pins form the each rod and piston assembly and put new rods on the pistons.
9)next ur going to get a ring compressor and put it around the piston to compress the rings and insert rod into cylinder and tap the piston the rest of the way down
*******when reinserting piston into cylinder do not put a dry piston into it. put some motor oil on the piston when its in the ring compressor.********
10)support crankshaft and put all caps back on correct rods.
11) reinstall ladder frame.
12) reinstall cylinder head **with new cylinder head gasket***
13) reinstall timing chain and double check your timing.
14) put oil pan back on and refill motor with new oil.
if i forgot something feel free to add to it

MMMMM..... Nice stuff and in a nice clean enviroment. Hope the livingroom stays that way!

And look at all that assembly lube dribbling everywhere!
I did mine in my spare bedroom!
Lol, I do all my stuff on the kitchen counter
