Intake

I want/need a new intake. Would it be better to get the piping myself and do it that way. Bc I have a new KN&N code filter? Where would I find the right type of tubing needed and rough estimate on price?

Here's what I put in another post.

Here's the one I made. It's some crappy intake off eBay that isn't even made for our cars even though eBay says it is, a 6" piece of 3" pipe I got from Autozone, and a 4" section of the stock intake I used as a coupler. All it cost me was $40 and an hour of my time.

It's easy to do, I have essentially the same engine as you but yours is a 2200. This will at least give you an idea.

Do I need any special type of tubing, or will any kind work? I might hit up Advanced Auto's here in a few minutes to see what they got. But do I need a special type of tubing is really what I need to know? ANd what angle of arms?

Nothing special needed, just a little time. I found an intake that was listed for my car and modified it. It's a generic piece, though, most of them on eBay are and need modification to fit. It's aluminum tube, prebent, 3" diameter. I trimmed it a little at the TB to get it the way I wanted it. Then I drilled a hole for the IAT and to do that I cut off the second nipple (there were two vac line nipples on the intake, I only needed one), and drilled out the hole to 5/8" for the sensor. The intake comes with a silicone coupler for the TB, and plenty of hose for the PCV. It also comes with a filter but I didn't use it. I had to extend the intake to get the filter over to the fender, and angle it down so it would clear the hood. To do this I used a $2 piece of 3" exhaust pipe, about 6" long, and to attach it I cut off a piece of the stock rubber intake to use as a coupling. I reused the stock intake hose clamps to attach it. I already had a K&N cone filter which I reused.

If you want, NY J-Bodies has a how-to on their site to do an intake for a 2200 as well, using Honda intake kits.

Ya I looked at there site and read the how to. But it had two intakes to put together. I guess i'll hopefully have time tomorrow after I get off work to make mine. I have class in 3 hours. And all I have is my crappy WAI that I have now. I'll hopefully get some more replies on this in more simple terms like yours. Rather than whats on NYJ. Thanks for your help. It gives me more of an idea.

So I need 3" tubing. I have a new filter already. I have a grommet. What else is on the crocery list?

No problem. I'm always willing to help, man. There isn't anything special you should need, but a drill, hacksaw, and a 5/8" drill bit are good to have. If you want to make yours from scratch, measure the inlet on your filter. Not all cone filters are 3", you'll want to match the size so it fits right. And a bottle of the alcohol of your choice is good to have too. If it weren't for me being plowed when I made my intake it probably wouldn't have taken an hour to do.

Buying performance parts at a place where you buy your food and cloths at, isn't a place i would buy performance parts at. To me that just isn't right....

Just out of curiosity are you making your WAI into a CAI? or are you just remaking one since your current one doesn't fit well?

Dont you think 3" piping is a bit too big?

And if you are trying to take a shot at me for ,y intake, i suggest you get your facts straight. If i just read it wrong, then never mind.

I haven't noticed any problems from having 3". Response is crisp, no noticable issues with velocity, actually the engine seems quite content with it.

But no, I wasn't taking any shots at your intake. I don't know what gave you that idea.

I have a WAI right now. I have the 2.2 non ecotec. My current intake is 3" and I just want to make it into a CAI without spending $200. I've read on the internet and some places on how to custom make one, but I guess I'd rather have the opinion from others who have done this. Sorry if i'm sounding like a newb. But i want it done right I guess.

There's nothing wrong with making your own. Frankly, I tend to take more pride in making something myself rather than buying it off a shelf. And it's not hard to build your own intake, and if you take your time and do it right it'll work just as well as the $200+ intakes the big companies make. For those who would rather spend that kind of money on a metal or plastic tube, well, that's their decision to make.

Re: Intake

if you already have a WAI, you probably wont notice a differenece in having a CAI. you get enough outside air in your engine compartment when your moving, that its not that it would be about the same temp. so basically you could just save yourself the 40 bux or so it will take to make a CAI, because the performance diff. wont be more than 1/2-1 horsepower. and you always run a risk with CAI, because of the fact that its outside the engine compartment, typically close to the ground. what may happen is water damage to the intake and to the engine itself (hydralock).. THATS VERY BAD, lol.. theres something out there that will prevent water from getting into the engine and such, but for the life of me i cant remember what its called...

take a look HERE for all ive just said.

good luck man.

Taking in water isn't an issue unless the filter becomes cmpletely submerged in water, so unless he plans on taking his car out on the lake, or driving through standing water during a heavy rain storm, he need not worry. But the part you refer to is a bypass valve. It's more or less a tiny filter between the main filter and the TB to prevent the engine from making enough vacuum to suck up water in the event the main filter is submerged.
