HO intake mani swap, keeping EGR
Thursday, March 30, 2006 6:04 AM
I am getting ready to install m HO intake manifold and want to know what you have to do to keep the EGR. I know someone in this forum made an adapter for the assembly that makes it fit with the HO manifold on. Has anyone done what it says on the New York J-Bodies website?

Here's what they did:
EGR
We removed the egr and mounting bracket from the head, kept the egr plugged into the wire harness, and ran a vacuum line from the intake manifold (any port but FROM THE MAP SENSOR) to the large open port on the egr. We used a brass nipple fitting and a filtered air line fitting (3/8 pipe thread), and tapped the large egr port with a 3/8 NPT tap. No check engine light. Then just zip tie the egr out of harms way.

Get a little more details on it, I am going to need it for when I get my car inspected with the GM SC. So I assume you are using the GM block off plate? Hows the car run? get some pics.
This sounds like it could clear up a lot of problems, does the car idle and run like stock?

that dont work. i tried it.

you will get the EGR insufficent flow code.

best bet is to swap over to a 99 ecu( not sure if u have a 96, i didnt look).

my egr i just unplugged it all and clear the check engine light when i start the car. trust me it runs the best. the egr simulator worked for the code, but made the car run like crap. i tried all that vaccum line trick, works for a little then a code comes up. so only 3 options- 99 ecu, clear the code with a code scanner,or leave it stock.

I have a scanner, so everytime that you start the car up and the CEL comes on you just clear the code while the car is on? Won't the CEL just come back on while you are driving?

The EGR code doesnt come back till you shut the car off and restart it. I am the one who made the adapter. I will be making them to sell to other memebers very soon (has taken longer then i thought to get all the parts together)

ya, the code stays away until i shut it off and start it back up, weather you are driving 5 miles or 150.

now with the vaccum line crap hooked up to try to trick the EGR, the code would come on, i would clear it while driving, and it would come back right away and wouldnt go away .

Ok, so my best bet is to just install the block off plate and clear the code everytime. Sounds simple enough. Probably a lot easier than relocating the EGR. Or at least until urweak starts making the adapters.

I wrote that a few years ago...... when I did the first HO swap. It worked, but we had one vac. line switched (had it going to the intake when it should have been going to the t.b) so it had a driveability problem....... but it didnt set codes. The whole idea behind that was to trick the MAP sensor into thinking the EGR was working, and this did the trick. Not sure why it didnt work on Jake's car.
